What can I eat???

What the heck can I eat!???

Every time I turn around I'm finding I can't eat this or that. Right now this fetus of mine should be missing his skull, limbs and half of his organs at the rate I'm going.

B-6, vitamin C, green tea. Crap my breakfast just killed my kid!

I mean it should be simple right? I mean, go back to basics right. Fruits, veggies and tea. I mean people in Asia drink green tea right???

I wanna rip my hair out. I'm eating oranges and bananas like crazy. I drink how many cups of tea a day at least one before and after each meal. And with the vitamin B-6 and C, not only am I on this banana and orange craze but add in all the other darn things that I eat that contain them.

I'm afraid that if I take my actual prenatal vitamins that I'll over dose.

Maybe I should go on the bread and water diet...oh wait, whole grains= B-6=death.

*sigh*

WHOO HOO MARY! You are one smart Chicka. I got them this time around thinking that I would use them if I got my morning sickness (haven't gotten it but have gotten some stomach bug which is why I've not been online). I take those things and puke, always have during all my pregnancies.

The issue with green tea is not the caffeine but is the fact that it messes with folic acid and doesn't allow it to do it's thing which in return can cause cell damage.

I believe that the issue with B-6 and C is that the fetus does not have fully developed kidneys and all nutrients will go to the fetus first and the mother will take what is left over. If the mother takes more than the recommended amount then the fetus will asborb as much as possible and won't be able to flush it out. I'm not 100% sure on that but I believe that is the issue. I do know that both sparks and babyfit warn against taking too much of both of those vitamins though and so do many other sources.

Prenatal vitamins are bad. They contain excessive amounts of lead (if you go by the 0 tolerance cspia law) which is linked to a variety of issues not only with the moms but children as well. Your best choice is to try to get a good variety of foods into you even if they don't sound appealing. http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/pbvit
ami.html (and if we can't tolerate lead in our kids toys why should we encourage the consumption of it in our vitamins?!)

Don't worry you'll be ok.

Don't worry! Those are water-soluable vitamins - you don't have to worry about too much.

Honestly, you're going to be OK - just take your prenatal and eat a normal, balanced diet (fruits, veggies, protien, grains). Avoid alcohol, raw fish and potential listeria hazards and you're basically home free. These days they even say a little caffiene is fine, so you can have a couple of cups of green tea with no worries. I liked ginger tea and peppermint tea when I was pregnant too.

I totally understand what you're feeling though - I worried about all sorts of stuff when I was pregnant, and everywhere you turn, there's more to worry about. There's a nice guide in What to Expect When You're Expecting if you want specific diet guidance.

You can't overdose on B or C vitamins. They get flushed out by the kidneys if your body doesn't need them. The worrisome vitamin is vitamin A, and even still, it's extremely hard to overdose on that. Beta carotene is the form of vitamin A in food and most prenatals, and that one is safe. It's the retinol version that's not good, and that isn't in food.

I don't think you could possibly eat too many fruits and veggies during pregnancy. Remember to include lean protein, milk, and plenty of water. Everything is going to be okay!

You can have the B and C vitamins but if you go over the daily dosage (too much of it in short) it can cause complications with the baby. I eat them both like crazy which is why I'm a bit irked to find this all out.
