Eating purposefully is something new for me. In my pre-SparkPeople days, when I was hungry, I'd just eat, and eat whatever it is that was plentiful, tasty, and FAST. Usually that meant cruising up to a drive-thru window. I'm enjoying all of this planning of meals on SparkPeople. There are no surprises, no last-minute, "what on earth am I going to eat?" Everything is thoughtful and purposeful.
Today, my son had a fencing meet in a nearby town, and so I packed a turkey sandwich to take along. I ended up giving it to him when it became clear just how hungry he was after his first match. Without my sandwich, I settled into the afternoon with the orange that remained in my bag.
But three hours later, I was hungry. When he'd finished his next bout, he suggested we get some of the pizza that was being sold in the high school hallway. It had been brought in from a local pizzeria, and smelled good. I was concerned about "going off of my diet" but after a thinking about it for a moment, I realized that eating one slice of pizza was not a bad thing. I could work it into my "diet" and For Crying Out Loud I needed to stop calling this new way of eating a DIET! It was a lifestyle change - a move to healthier eating habits. Not a diet. And a slice of pizza would be just fine.
I enjoyed that purposeful slice! Without guilt! Whodda thunk it?
