Fasting in the middle of weight goals

Monday, January 12, 2009

So as of yesterday, I started a fast, challenged by my pastor. This isn't unusual because January seems to be the month for fasting and praying. January being the first month of our calendar, the beginning of a fresh year, its nothing but appropriate to start the year off by seeking God and learning more about him, his word and growing your relationship with him. It also gives you an opportunity to learn more about yourself, the good - the bad - and the ugly.

This particular year, the fast is a 40 day fast, where we were challenged to give up something, usually itís a meal, but itís up to each individual. So I'm doing 1 meal every other day and in-between those days I'll be eating 2 meals. So basically today, I'm just having dinner, and tomorrow I'll have breakfast and dinner. The fast ends the day before my birthday - which I thought was awesome!

I'm eager to crucify my flesh and to replace eating with more prayer and devotional time. The hard part about this is that I had already set goals before I planned to fast to loose at least 30 pounds. So now, I need to make sure my priorities and reasoning is balanced and healthy as I continue with the fast and as i continue with my original goal to loose weight.

Can you take a meal replacement shake or something to keep your calorie intake up on fasting days? We fast regularly in our church, so I understand fasting -- but unless you're planning to eat a 1200 to 1800 calorie meal on the days that you're only eating one meal, I'm concerned about keeping your calorie intake healthy enough so that your body doesn't go into starvation mode. Whatever you decided to do, God bless!
