Walking games are a great way to sneak extra activity to your day. It is also a fun way to increase the number of steps you take for those of you that wear pedometers. I started playing walking games when I was wearing my pedometer. Even though I haven't worn it in a long time, I still try to play at least one walking game every day.
Game #1-Window/Wall Tag
-Every time you go into a room, even if you are just reaching your hand in to turn off the light, go to the the window or opposite wall and touch it. If you forget to tag the window/wall when you go into a room, walk all the way back to the door then back to the window/wall. Add extra challenge by walking or running as fast as you can. When I'm the only one home, I like to shout, "Tag! You're it!" every time I touch the window/wall. It makes it even more fun.
Game #2 Drive everyone crazy.
-I chose the title to this game because when I do it, it sometimes drives my family crazy. When you have extra time, instead of sitting, pace. Chose a route around the house. (Example: walk from the kitchen through the hallway into the bathroom then back through the hallway into the livingroom then back through the hallway into the bedroom then back through the hallway to the kitchen then turn around and do it all over again.) Repeat this track as many times as you can/have time for. The example I gave is kind of a long track, but if you really want to drive the people you live with crazy, choose a shorter track. You can also include going up and down the stairs for extra challenge.
Game #3 The clothes folding strut
-When you are folding clothes or doing any other activity that is usually done sitting or standing in one place, try to do it walking instead. I have a table in my laundryroom where I put the clothes that are folded until I put them away. Instead of standing at that table to fold the clothes, I take my laundry basket to the opposite side of the room, and fold clothes on my way to the table. If I don't get the item of clothing folded by the time I reach the table, I have to work on it while I walk all the way back to the basket then back to the table, repeating this until the item is ready to put on the table. This game can also be used sorting clothes or putting them in the washer. Just put your laundry hamper somewhere else and carry ONE item at a time to its destination. It is more time-consuming, but think of all the extra calories you'll burn. Another fun variation is to walk/run as fast as you can to burn more calories. You may have to make more trips to the table and back while you are folding clothes, but like I said, it will burn more calories.
That is all for now, but don't worry, I always have more ideas! Have a calorie-blasting day! TTYL!
