New Automated Process to Replace Inactive SparkTeam Leaders

Wednesday, December 03, 2008

We love that our members have created thousands and thousands of SparkTeams, but sometimes for one reason or another a leader is no longer active. We launched a new feature this week where once a leader has not posted to a SparkTeam in 60 days, a note goes on the SparkTeam page saying that someone else can step up as leader. The first person to click this link will be put into consideration to be the leader. The current leader will have 3 days to respond - they can decide to add the person as the leader or decide to stay as leader. If the current leader does not respond, after 3 days the new person will become a leader. So you may see this appear on some of your inactive teams. If you believe a leader is inactive and you do not see this link, its possible another member has already requested to become the leader.

We hope this helps keep SparkTeams organized and moving forward by having active leaders. Also keep in mind that SparkTeams can have mutliple leaders, so if someone becomes a new leader of one of your SparkTeams and you would like to be a leader you can SparkMail them and ask them to make you a Co-Leader.

Wonderful idea. So many great teams have become inactive that need new leader ship. emoticon

As a leader I love this idea. The next thing might be to do the same thing for uinactive members. Some teams look large but because of inactive members. We need something for this as well.

    That's awesome!

It might be nice too to have some kind of notation on a person's page as to when they were last seen on SP. That way we can know if our "friends" have been gone for just a few days or if they are truly MIA.

How about inactive members in a team?

This is how I became the team leader of our team as the past person has not posted for some time.

What exactly is the team leader responsible for? Our team currently has no leader.

I think this is an excellent idea to clean things up and motivate teams to have an active leader.

One of the teams I'm on is leaderless. The former leader has been non-existent for ages (more than 2 years) which I'm sure is why there are now only 3 of us trying to keep our team from falling apart.

Leave it to SparkPeople to come up with another good idea. You are the best! emoticon

Great idea: thanks for the option! One of my teams had an inactive leader, so I emailed her and asked whether she'd like to have a co-leader as I'd seen on some of my other teams. She said, sure. Now suddenly she's become a very active leader! And a good one, it appears, to boot. Just needed a nudge I guess.

Thank you! I am so glad you added this feature to SP... Hopefully it will help out everyone. There is nothing worse than a leaderless team, that was so annoying to me when I first started out and was looking for teams to join!

    Great! Thank you.

I joined the Portland, Oregon teams and introduced myself in those tems and was never welcomed by one person. I assume there are no Team Leaders in Portland. Then like 6 months after I joined someone says "Hi Debbie" in those teams after I have already left the teams. emoticon

I really like this accept it makes me feel really bad when I have a team who no matter what I have done, nobody still posts or wants to be active. I am waiting for the 3 months to close it. But meanwhile. I am not posting on it because nobody else wants to. I did email the team again and only got one response saying that it was a good idea to let the team go.

I still feel awful though seeing that really big yellow sign on my team and that maks me LOOK REALLY BAD AND FEEL BAD.

I just don't know what else to do.

Thanks for all you do, Jetta

I really like this feature. One of the Teams I am on has a single leader and she has been MIA for so long I don't know when or if I have seen her post on it. 2 of them, including this one, has no Team Goals, Articles on FMS in the Favorites or anything else that we really need so we post the Articles ourselves.

I'm so incredibly appreciative of this process. I hope you can find some sort of clean up program for co-leaders who disappear also! If I get hit by a car my team will get handled. That's oddly comforting! Thanks

What happens when a leader created a team, makes it private and wants it to dissolve? Will you still be doing this?

That is an excellent idea and should solve a common problem.
What about inactive 'co leaders'??
I'm on a private team as a co leader and that is because there are two that have been inactive for a long time.

I took over a team that had an inactive leader. Not too long ago, that inactive leader, who had not posted in who knows how long, started two very self-serving threads and sent Spark Mails to all the team members with the same self-serving message.

Since she did that, the activity has died off in the thread. I'm trying to rebuild, but it is frustrating. We have a few new members, but the ones who were previously active - including my 2 co-leaders just stopped posting after this happened. I think they all believe that the old absent leader has become active in the team again, which is not the case. She just posted asking people to support her in a private endeavor and then disappeared again.

So, I really love this new feature.

Can we fix it so that replaced leaders are removed from the team and have to re-join as a member? At least that way, the other members would be aware that person has come back, but is no longer "in charge."

Very good idea!! I took a team that had an inactive leader--it was fortunate that I knew how to do that. I know that knowing how to become a leader is the biggest challenge for those that want to be leaders of teams that don't have active leaders.

Thanks, SparkPeople!

a team needs a leader. the leader needs to be up beat as well. groups need to be challenged and the leader is the best way for that to happen. absent leaders just don't challenge me.
