Alone but Not Lonely

A couple of years ago I read Barbara Hughes' book "Disciplines of a Godly Woman". In her chapter devoted to the single woman, she gives the following advice:
"Have you taken a passive role rather than expanding your interests and contacts? Read books, go to plays, join a club, take up gardening - try something new. Invite others to do something with you. Make a list of everything you'd like to do and then put a few dates on the calendar and begin planning."
The Lord has used that paragraph to help me stretch my neck out of my warm, cozy shell and really embrace this life He has given me. This year, with His help, I have really tried to take advantage of new opportunities - even having the courage to do it alone if necessary.
Tonight was one example. The South African Police Service band put on a benefit concert at the nature reserve in my town. I really wanted to attend, but all the friends I asked to accompany me were already busy. I decided to go anyway. I am so glad I did. It didn't matter that I was sitting alone in a huge crowd of music lovers. I probably enjoyed the concert and the beauty of God's creation just as much as, if not more than, those little groups of people clustered around my solitary lawn chair.
Now on to the next thing on my list...
