Up five pounds, down three inches

I knew my body was good at gaining weight, but I didn't know how good! So since I've changed my goals into gaining muscle, I've gained five pounds. is it all muscle? Probably not. But I have lost an inch off my hips and two inches off my stomach!

I've only been at this for a month, so seeing five extra pounds is a little scary. But I have to get out of the scale minded mode. I mean, losing inches, even though it isn't a huge amount is something right? My pants are a little looser. That's exciting to me. =)

    When you are strength training, don't rely too much on the scale. If need be, put it away and only reference it once a month. GOOD JOB on the inches gone!!

  That is really great! If you can loose inches while gaining weight, it is obviously the right kind of weight. We could all do with muscle gain since it burns more calories.

    Great job Amber, I'm all about the better fitting clothes myself. I think how we feel and look is one of the best forms of feedback. I know I am gaining strength, bloodpressure has significantly dropped and I am decreasing body fat, so I just don't use the scale as much. I think the only "ideal" weight is the one where I am the most fit I can be.

    I've read mention of books called "Lose the Fat, feed the Muscle" and several along that line, from blogs here on Sparks. I see the books are on amazon, but I don't know much about them.

    I think the more ways you can assess your progress the better. The scale is one, but so is your fitness level, the measuring tape, the size of your clothes, etc. So what the scale went know the reason is muscle-building and your other indicators are telling you that you are still making progess. You are an inspiration! Keep up the fabulous work!!!

    Losing inches is so important because that means your decreasing the fat content on your mid-section and wherever else you struggled with. I can see the mental anguish gaining the 5 pounds would be too. Hey you're gaining muscle that's the important part!

    CONGRATULATIONS !!! That is awesome losing the inches. Ignore what the scale says, I can gain or lose 5 pounds in a day, especially if I have had a high sodium or high carb day, boy do I retain water. Keep thinking of the inches you lost, that is AWESOME!!!! Keep the scale only as a guideline, but watch the measuring tape much more closely as those numbers are way more important that what the scale says.
