6 weeks to go...

...and then I will be released from the sedentary torture chamber that is the basic sciences curriculum. Three more weeks of lecture, then nine exams over the following three weeks. Then I'll have month off to reorganize my life before starting two years of clinical rotations. The top priorities for that time are developing a sustainable fitness schedule and moving to a more dog-friendly apartment. (The hours will be long on the wards, and I may not be able to come home during lunch to take the mutts outside.)

I'm usually stressed out by big transitions, but I'm really looking forward to this one. It was five years ago, when I returned to school to complete my pre-med coursework, that I started getting really heavy. Prior to that I had a job that kept me on my feet all day, and I could eat pretty much what I pleased. I should have maintained an exercise schedule while in school, but the coursework was all-consuming for me. It's easy to justify sacrificing self-care for the sake of academics when your chosen field is ultra-competitive. And of course once I got to med school, life only got more hectic. I spend between 12 and 18 hours a day sitting on my butt, studying. Ugh. Yet, even with such little physical activity, I'm still able to lose weight when I follow the meal plans. It's going to be fantastic when rotations start and I'm suddenly running around a hospital for 8 to 12 hours a day. The weight will melt right off, so long as I don't chuck the meal plans out the window. When the bookstore marked down the white coats last week, I bought a few in successively smaller sizes and hung them up in the living room for motivation. I can't wait to shrink into them. =)

Good Luck on that transition, and congrats on setting goals.
