Back Zip Hooded Baby Sweater

Sweater starts with hood, sts are picked up at the neck edge so the garment is knitted neck down.

Supplies: 2 (2, 2, 3) skeins any worsted weight knitting yarn
(Check label on yarn to be sure it is recommended to use with size 8 needles)
15 (16, 17, 17) inch matching color nylon neck-type zipper and sewing thread
Size 5 and 8 knitting needles or size to obtain gauge (circular may be helpful)

Cable hook or needle Stitch holders Stitch markers
Tape measure Scissors Size G crochet hook
Tapestry and Hand sewing needle

Abbreviations: k – knit lp(s) – loop(s)
p – purl inc – increase (s,d,ing)
St st – Stockinette stitch pat(s) – pattern(s)
St(s) – stitch(es) cont – continue
Sl – slip tog – together
yo – yarn over rep – repeat
sc – single crochet

Note: Instructions are for newborn size with changes for sizes 6, 12, and 18 months in ( ).
You might want to circle or highlight your size for easier reading.

Measurements: NEWBORN: 5 - 10 pounds, up to 18”chest
6 MONTHS: 11 - 18 pounds, up to 20” chest
12 MONTHS: 19 - 24 pounds, up to 22” chest
18 MONTHS: 24 + pounds, up to 22” chest

Gauge: 9 sts = 2 inches; 6 rows = 1 inch on size 8 needles. ALWAYS CHECK GAUGE!!!

Pattern Variations: over 10 stitches for front, 6 stitches for sleeves
You may ignore all patterns and make a sweater with plain front and sleeve.
Cable pattern for front:
Row 1: p2, k6, p2
Row 2: k2 p6, k2
Row 3: p2, sl 3 sts to cable and hold front, k3, k 3 sts from cable, p2
Row 4: Rep Row 2
Rep rows 1 - 4 for pattern
Lattice pattern for front:
Row 1: p1, yo, k1, k2tog through back lps, k2, k2tog, k1, yo, p1
Row 2: k2, p6, k2
Rep rows 1 & 2
Cable pattern for sleeve:
Row 1, p1, k4, p1
Row 2: k1, p2, k
Row 3: p1, sl2 to cable front, k2, k2 from cable, p1
Row 4: Rep Row 2
Rep rows 1 - 4 for pattern
Lattice pattern for sleeve:
Row 1: p1, yo, k2 tog back lps, k2tog, yo, p1
Row 2: k2, p2, k2
Rep rows 1 & 2 for pattern
HOOD

With larger needles, cast on 58 (58, 62, 70) sts,
Row 1 – 4: k2, p2
Row 5: K6, cont in rib to last 6 sts, k6.
Row 6: P6, cont in rib to last 6 sts, p6.
Row 7: Rep row 5.
Row 8: K8, cont in rib to last 8 sts, k8.
Row 9: P8, cont in rib to last 8 sts, p8.
Row 10: Rep row 8.
Row 11: K10, cont in rib to last 10 sts, k10.
Row 12: P10, cont in rib to last 10 sts, k10.
Row 13: Rep row 11. Cont in pat, inc the number of sts k or p at each end of row by 2 every 4th row,
until 2 sts are left in center. K 1 row. Bind off and cut yarn.

Neck

Fold hood in half and with bound-off edge kept for the zipper opening in the back, start at bottom of bound-off edge, with smaller needles pick up 25 (27, 29, 32) sts, cast on 4 (4, 4, 6,) sts for chin,
Pick up 25 (27, 29, 32) sts on other side: 54 (58, 62, 70) sts on needle.
K1, p1 for 7 rows, end on wrong side. Change to larger needles.

Next Row: Increase Row

All increases made by picking up a stitch between sts

K7 (8, 9, 10) sts, k1, inc, place marker, k1, inc, k0 (0, 1, 1), k6 in pattern, k0 (0, 1, 1), k1, inc,
place marker, k1, inc, k5 (6, 7, 8), k10 over pattern, k5 (6,7,8), k1, inc, place marker, k1, inc,
k0 (0, 1, 1), k6 over pattern, k0 (0,1,1), k1, inc, place marker, k1, inc, k7 (7, 8, 9)
Total stitches 62 (66, 70, 78)
Next row and all even rows: k the knits and p the purls.
Next row and all odd rows: cont in St st or cable pattern while at the same time inc before and after each
marker until 150 (154, 158, 166) sts on needles. End on wrong side: total of 13 inc(s).

With right sides facing, k across 20 (21, 22, 23) sts of right back, place 32 (32, 32, 34) sts of right sleeve on holder, cast on 2 sts and k across 46 (48, 50, 52) sts of front, place 32 (32, 32, 34) sts of left sleeve on holder,
cast on 2 sts, k across 20 (21, 22, 23) sts of left back: 90 (94, 98, 102) sts on needle. Work on these sts while maintaining St st and/or pattern until 5 (6, 7, 7) inches or desired length to underarm, minus 1 inch. Change to smaller needles and 1 X 1 rib for 1 inch. Bind off

Sleeves

With larger needles, pick up sleeve sts. Attach separate yarns to the sleeve sts so both sleeves are worked at the same time. Inc 1 each side of each sleeve and work in St st and/or pattern for 4 (5, 6, 6) inches, or to desired length minus 1 inch. Change to smaller needles and work 1 X 1 rib for 1 inch. Bind off.

Finishing

With size G hook, work 1 row SC around back opening. (Starting at bottom of back left side makes a better edge.) Weave sleeve seams. Sew Zipper in by hand placing the closed end at top of hood leaving open at bottom of sweater.

  I am on the increase row and need help, I am not sure if I continue ribbed pattern, start stockinette and how to know where to place cable pattern on front. Please email me at pamdalbec71@gmail.com
