As I mentioned in a previous post, I relaxed some of my weight loss efforts over the holiday weekend. I pretty much ate what I wanted, including fried foods, wine, ice cream, etc. It was an interesting experiment that resulted in some valuable lessons.
#1: Eating poorly isn't THAT enjoyable.
Sure, it was nice to dig into a big plate of fried catfish and hushpuppies, but later that evening I felt bloated and lethargic. It is nice to know that these 'forbidden' foods don't have the same lure that they used to. I realized that I actually prefer eating healthy foods! Mentally, I think this will help me feel less deprived.
#2: Indulging occasionally will NOT ruin my progress.
After a weekend of eating whatever I wanted, I was prepared to see the number on the scale go up a bit. When I summoned the courage to step on the scale, I was shocked to see that I was exactly where I was a week ago. Maybe this was purely luck, but it was nice to see that a few days of poor choices will not hurt me as much as I thought.
#3: It is important to RELAX.
The best part about my weekend is that I had a chance to relax. I gave myself a break. I didn't stress. I can't tell you how nice it was to just let it all go for a few days. Since then, I have been able to get back to my healthy habits - but without so much effort. I have been eating well and working out because I want to, not because I feel like I have to. Although I still have a weight loss goal in mind, I'm not as concerned about when I get there.
I hope this new mindset will stick around! I know I'll probably still have cravings every now and then and I'm sure some days will be easier to relax than others. I'll just have to come back to this post and remind myself of the lessons I learned this weekend.
