Angel Flight 1-5 Delta

Wednesday, August 13, 2008

I know I have the 'reputation' of insightful blogs( So I have been told) but today I would like to deviate a little to focus on another matter.

I do not know how many of you are familiar with Angel Flight. Angel Flight is the name used by a number of groups whose members provide free transportation for needy patients and perform other missions of community service.

Angel Flight missions are made possible by pilots who volunteer their time, their skills, and the funds required for aircraft operating expenses. Many pilots provide Angel Flights in their own personal aircraft, although some do so using rented aircraft. Pilots must usually meet certain minimum flight experience requirements before they are allowed to command an Angel Flight mission. They also receive training on the special procedures required for Angel Flight.

I have added a link to this blog so you can see why I have taken the time to write this:

My experience with Angel Flight was in 1994 when my son Joshua and I were in Iowa where Josh was given a bone marrow transplant. His cancer returned and Josh was then given a white cell transplant, a living tissue transplant and one of the first performed in the United States. On December 3rd, the social worker called Angel Flight and they were ready to go in 20 minutes and had all the flight itinerary set! They flew Josh and I to Valparaisso Indiana where we switched planes and flew into New York via Canada. In the matter of hours these people took us from Iowa City, Iowa to Syracuse New York!! Their payment . . . they wanted a hug from Joshua!

So, maybe during the day today, you/we could stop and pause, pray, praise, or just a moment of silence and think of those that gave so much for others and asked for nothing in return! Their reputation speaks volumes for itself.

Angel Flight 1-5 Delta . Soar!

I remember getting the news flash of that last crash, it was heart wrenching. But knowing of all the successful travels gives us some sort of relief that this program is still strong because of all the dedicated volunteers..... god bless

I'd never heard of Angel Flight until that one crashed here in Iowa City awhile back. So sad... But an excellent program nonetheless!

Thank you for sharing this with us. I had never heard of Angel Flight. I am glad they were there for you and I hope your son is doing better. I will definitely do what you have requested. It sounds like it is well deserved.

Angel Flight sounds like a wonderful volunteer group. I am so happy that your son could benefit from them. How is your son now?

Last night, as my husband, my son and I were watching news on the TV, everything was so awful. It wasn't just what had happened, but the terrible things that might happen.

Therefore, I think it is especially important to recognize those who make a positive contribution to our world. From my experience, I would like to sing the praises of those folks involved with Hospice, the American Red Cross Blood Bank, and Planned Parenthood (the three that come to mind immediately).

Those of you who are old enough, may remember Scoop Nisker who would end every program with, "If you don't like the news, go out and make some yourself". Here's to spreading good news!

I saw this story and was heartbroken. I was a Hospice and medical social worker for years and referred a ton of patients to angel flight. They are wonderful and incredible and truly doing the work of God.

My heart goes out the family, the pilot and the agency as a whole.
