SparkStreaks and Good Morning America Comments

Friday, May 23, 2008

Hello Everyone - hope you are all doing well!

I'm writing to talk about how excited I am about the new SparkStreaks feature!

A streak is one of the reasons that I ended up starting SparkPeople. Many years ago, I started a streak of working out at least 10 minutes every day. I ended up doing this 700 days in a row and it changed my life (the local newspaper even did a small story on this at the time, that was fun). This was both because of the improved fitness AND the confidence I gained from this adventure.

Along the way, a co-worker started something similar. She lost 50 pounds and told me I changed her life. She then went on to start a walking group where people said, "if you can do it, we can do it!" That's when I realized that "Your daily actions and words impact more people than you'll ever realize!"

One of the most important parts about a streak is to only use it as a positive motivator. You aren't allowed to get too upset if you miss a day. That's why we built in the consistency percentage.

I want everyone on the site to know that I am right in here with you working hard to reach goals. So, I'm making a commitment to keep my SparkPoints login streak as close to 100% as I possibly can and making that public - and I'll have one for 10 minutes of fitness as well. Everyone can hold me publicly accountable for this. Maybe we'll have to come up with a fun contest :).

I'll write more about this in an upcoming State of the Spark. I wanted to make a post now because I'm so excited about this new feature.

Also - I wanted to do a quick update on Good Morning America. We talked to Nichole and she told us that they were supposed to ask her a first question that let her talk about SparkPeople, but they had to cut that out because of time concerns. She was bummed about this, but was able to mention SP on the Good Morning America radio program and on Extra. We've learned that you can never tell what will happen on these media appearances - that's show biz :).

But, I do want everyone to know that we're working very hard to get to the point that these types of major TV shows do big stories just on SparkPeople. We have some interesting things in the works just for this.

Our mission remains to SPARK millions of PEOPLE to reach their goals. Nothing will stop us from working hard to reach this goal. We're so thankful to Nichole and every other member working to reach their own goals and then spreading the spark both on the site and around the world.

The bottom line is that there will be frustrations like this along the way, but we're getting closer and closer to a major breakthrough if we all keep working at this.

Thanks again for your support!

SparkCheers!

Chris/SparkGuy

Chris/SparkGuy, I am inspired that this website has made it to the media; and silly me did not find it until last month. I look forward to learning and sharing with others. It is very inspirational and supportive to all and for free...I am glad I finally found you even without the media. You never know who you influence and how it affects your life. I lost 80lbs and changed my lifestyle and changed my whole career by taking a huge leap of faith...Faith is what we must all have in each other to help us through. Faith is not seen but shared....thanks again for sharing. Connie Allen, CNC

Today, is the first day to the Best of my life.
I have just returned from my 40th wedding anniversary.
I am about 65 pounds more than that wonderful day, 40 years ago.
But I am going to make you all proud of me and Start to be Smart about being apart of SparkPeople.

I'm Apoundaday, although I am not trying to do a pound of physical weight but definitely all that other weight will continue to come off too when there is a Better Person coming from the old one.

Watch me sweat, breath and enjoy my coming down, One Pound at a Time.

Although it might be 40 years, I don't have to look like I'm waiting for a rocking chair.

Peace

Apoundaday

I like the sparkstreak too. It's fun to see how many days in a row that you can keep those good habits up.
As for the impact that your words and actions can have it's so true. I joined my local gym on May 1st and was so excited when I told everyone that my mom now walks everyday, my sister is going to her fitness center and my RLF started going back to the gym after a year hiatus. (and I made it to the gym almost every day this month woo hoo a streak!)

I just wanted you to know that although I had already lost the weight I needed to be 'healthy'. That I am anything but that. Despite my continued efforts to be that way. Chronic Health issues prevent me from ever using that term regarding myself. My Page gives all the Gory Details. *LoL*

I did find your site through a Spot on my Local TV news. At that time I had gained about 7 lbs. of my goal weight back. I checked out your site & have come to value a great Team & Support that must have been sent to me for a reason.

I recently found out that my 'usual abnormal' Mammograms have 'changed'. I face a great amount of challenges & decisions in the coming days. My Teams & this Site have given me knowledge & support that I would have had to 'go searching' for. Everyone here, the Health Links & Articles that have been made available to me- are invaluable!

The Good Lord must have known that I would need you guys & set mine & your paths to meet.

    Hi Sparkguy:
As an SP newbie I'm really enjoying the site and making progress! Thanks to you and your team for all you do. Your positive spirit filters down throughout your entire organization and into the hearts and minds of all SP members.
I was always told "if something seems too good to be true, it probably isn't". Thanks for proving this statement false.
All the best,
Molly

Sparkstreaks is a FANTASTIC idea. Could you change the goals so we can say if we want them to be by day or week? Is that possible?

I'd like to second what Jan (BFREEATLAS) says in her comments. I feel exactly the same way. Your generosity and commitment makes me want to contribute and "pay it forward." Your story proves the kind of impact we can all have for the better, and that small acts of kindness can add up and make a huge difference!

Warmest wishes for a SPARKling shower of blessings!

LOL!

Just enabled the new feature, too bad it starts from today with it's counting and doesn't look back through history of my tracking...but I'm probably just being a geek. Look forward to it tracking my streaks from today forward anyway.

Thanks!

    Thanks for letting us know.
As I was watching GMA I thought to my self as far as I was concerned nothing was even mentioned about SP and then the other girl Km talked about LA weight loss.
SO I'm glad to know that GMA does do what you say they do.
Thanks for SP and all that it does for all of us!

    Chris/SparkGuy,

I just want to add, like many others before me, how wonderful your site is, and how terrific I think you are for getting this started, and how generous you are for offering it at no charge.

Your SparkStreaks, as well as many other options on your site, have gotten me thinking thoughts in a very positive direction. Thank you, thank you, thank you. And I have started taking action! Your Spark Points are brilliant as a motivator.

I do hope that the advertising on the site does pick up the expense for it, or at least help to a large degree, and even make a profit for you. You deserve at least that much.

You are making such a difference in the lives So Many people and bringing so much hope, happiness and good health and fun to so many individuals and families. I certainly do hope that this comes back to you in a wonderful way. You must be so proud of yourself, and all of the people who have followed your lead by making such positive changes in their lives and health.

I have reduced my medications for diabetes by 50% in the last month, after taking it for over 15 years, and set a goal to lose over 100 pounds, and start moving again. And even have some fun instead of just getting along.

I have told anyone who will listen, including my husband, friends and doctors who are wondering how I am doing so well. I have just gotten started with SparkPeople in the last week, but your site has so much more to offer than those other ones, one of which is WorldWide (WW-LOL) and I will be dropping very soon!

There is so much to learn from your site offerings, that it is very exciting. And I don't usually impress that easily. I have a degree from UCLA with a Masters Degree in Psychotherapy.

You have a heart of gold, and I do hope that all of this gives you great happiness and satisfaction. I also hope that the words that are offered to you in sincere thanks add to your joy.

Also, I was wondering if there is any part of your organization that is non-profit, that your members can contribute to and help out? If you want to respond privately to that question, that would be fine, also.

Again, Thank You So Very Much from the Bottom of My Heart, which will probably keep me going many more years, thanks to what you have started and support in such a generous way!

I am hoping that these offerings will be made available for many years to come, to continue to help improve the lives of many more people as they learn to live fuller, healthier lives and share this with so many others!

Most Sincerely,

Jan

SparkStreaks sounds like a great motivator that I am looking forward to trying out. Also, thank you for the update for "Good Morning America". Not mentioning Spark seems to defeat the purpose of asking Nichole how she lost the weight.

Chris, thanks so much for your vision and you generosity in starting SparkPeople. I love the idea of SparkStreaks!

I actually emailed GMA and told them I was very disappointed that they didn't highlight Nichole & SparkPeople - and they were doing a disservice to their audience...and I live Ravon's suggestion and will do likewise in writing to Oprah!

Now, fyi, I cannot believe that I actually am cleaning my closet this weekend because clothes are too big...and I can't believe I'm at my lowest weight in 9 years...yup...still have long way to go to goal, but lowest in 9 years...can't believe I started a walking group at work...and look for more opportunities to walk places...and actually adjust food for the day if I know I'm going out...The old me would have just said, "ah, it's only one day." So as I get healthier...and my bp drops...and my cholesterol drops, I can truly say, "Thank you, Chris, Nicole, and the rest of the SP staff...and my 50+ with 50-99 lbs to lose...because you have SAVED MY LIFE!"

This is great. I loved the idea of streaks and have walked at least 1 mile every day since I joined SPARKPEOPLE. I'm going to have to come up with something different to start a new streak. My success has a lot to do with setting short goals and aiming for streaks. THANKS.

I was a little upset that she didn't mention SparkPeople when she was on GMA, but I figured they cut it out. I wrote an email to Oprah's website and told her how well I was doing on Sparks and how you have this free site with cool things. They haven't gotten back to me yet. I let them know that lots of the shows that Sparks has been on, I had never seen, but lots of people watch Oprah. I let you know if she gets back to me. Thanks so much for this site. It has saved my life and given me confidence to move on!
