End Of Semester Woes

Friday, April 18, 2008

This is mostly about my cognition class, but there's other stresses vented here as well.

Here are the questions that I will need to write out blue book answers for for my Cognition final in 13 days:

1. Define attention, discuss the functional neuroanatomical mediation of this cognitive domain, and describe how it supports speech/language function, with reference to levelt's model.

2. Define long-term memory, discuss the functional neuroanatomical mediation of this cognitive domain, and describe how it supports speech/language function, with reference to levelt's model.

3. Define short-term memory and working memory, discuss the functional neuroanatomical mediation of this cognitive domain, and describe how it supports speech/language function, with reference to levelt's model.

4. Define (generally) executive functions, discuss the functional neuroanatomical mediation of this cognitive domain, and describe how it supports speech/language function, with reference to levelt's model.

Might I add that we only have 2 classes left, and we haven't even STARTED talking about executive functions.

I went to office hours, and essentially Jacob told me to "read the book over and over again until you can tell the story". I told him the book doesn't make sense, and he said "sure it does!" I said "but I don't understand it" he said "sure you do!"

sigh.

So far I have a definition for attention...and I know that there are 2 domains for attention (state functions and channel specific), and that the thalamus does stuff intra and extra, and the frontal lobes do something, and downstream and upstream areas do stuff, and the basal something is in there, along with a few other 15+ letter words.

And adding to the stress of this is 3 other finals to study for, I have to conduct an assessment on a toddler next week, I need to write up clinical recommendations for my dementia client based on the standardized test I administered, sign up for final file check out, and sign up for a 60 minute evaluation on my clinical aptitude, which involves an 8 page Self Rating of Professional Behaviors form that I need to fill out and present.

Oh, and I need to prepare for ACTUALLY starting clinic this summer (as I'm technically not in clinic right now, but you'd never know that with all the clinical work I'm doing) and arrange Options stuff with my kid for summer, and somehow figure out how I'm going to pay IU for summer classes since financial stuff with Bob is shaky due to Davy braking his collar bone and needing surgery and Daniel's transmission blowing.

Needless to say, I'm feeling a bit frayed and a little fragile at the moment. My instinct is telling me to find a closet and hide, but that won't solve anything.

OK, enough "break venting" time, gotta get back to my text book. If I ever meet Marsel Mesulam I'm going to kill him.
