No more running?????

Well, I have managed to hurt myself in a way that may derail my running for a long time. Three weeks ago, a terrible pain crept into my hip that forced me to stop running. It is finally much better, though I feel twinges now and then. However, the very second I start to run, it comes screaming back. It is hip bursitis. I bought a spinning bike and that seems to help with the more vigorous exercise but I am not really a bike person. It is very painful in my lower quads. But, I do what I can. I replaced running with fast walking...5mph intervals... and hill...15% incline intervals. I am not burning the calories I want but it will have to suffice for now. I never thought I would miss running this much!

    I'm so sorry to hear about your bursitis. I ran five miles for the first time today and felt elated when I reached my car. I was worried about a pain in my heal and a blister on my foot because I thought that I really didn't want to stop running. I sympathise with you. but I do bike regularly and find a great work out in it .. I do live in the hilliest state ever.. Vermont.. but a 25 to 30 mile ride is a great way to spend a couple of hours. You will recover but it takes time and I agree. physical therapy can help a lot.

    I know how you feel. When orthopod told me I shouldn't run another marathon, he wrote in my chart "Patient cried." :(

    I too had hip bursitis and tendonitis in 2006. I didn't run for a couple of months and went through physical therapy. I got back to running and still do the strength exercises and stretching for my hips and legs. I haven't had any significant problems since then. The bursitis still flares up occasionally, but I can deal with it and it doesn't slow me down. Maybe you should check into physical therapy. There is a lot of information on the web about hip bursitis and exercises to strengthen your hips. Best wishes. I hope you aren't down for long.

    Sorry to hear about your injury. Maybe if you give it time to heal and build up again very slowly you will be able to do some running in the future. If not, I hope you will find something else you love as much.

    I was diagnosed with bursitis as well in my hip after my last marathon. I took a few months off and am back on the road, though it still bothers me at times. I just cant give up my sport :(
