Reignite the Spark!

Friday, March 21, 2008

We're kicking off a new project here at SparkPeople. As an active member of the Community, your help is crucial to its success. We're calling it Reignite the Spark and the goal is for you to strengthen the connections you've made with other members and to provide encouragement for members that might be having trouble.

We want everyone to know that our Community is so strong and positive that even if you don't explicitly ask for help, someone from the SparkPeople community is going to reach out and offer a kind word or motivational thought. We want everyone to know that is not just a free weight loss website—it’s a global movement of people taking control of their health and helping others do the same.

As an active member of SparkPeople, you have probably supported or received support from a lot of members. (If you haven't had a chance to connect with others yet, you can learn why our community improves your likelihood of success.) But sometimes you lose touch with members that you've created friendships with. So we're asking every member to reach out to SparkFriends that you've lost contact with and see how their doing.

If you're going to reach out to old friends, it might help to look over the some of your personal archives to figure out whom you've lost touch with. (Make sure you’re logged in for these links to work). You can do this by going through your SparkMail sent folder or by visiting your Recent Message Board History.

If you've stayed in contact with all of your friends or you'd just like to reach out to a few other members that might need a helping hand, then we'd suggest browsing SparkPages to see who hasn't updated their page in a while. Once you identify who you'd like to reach out to, the best ways to connect with new friends is to send a SparkMail or a SparkGoodie, or add a comment to their SparkPage or recent blog posts.

The key is that you do something—anything—to let others know that you want to see them succeed! Help yourself and others to Reignite the Spark!

This is a fantastic idea and a great way to help both others and oneself. Maybe offer points to the one who reaches out and to both after they've sent/received a certain number of posts??

Maybe put a search function up (search by topic, age, disease(s), months since last post, etc).

I know both .asp and programming and would be VERY interested in helping to write/maintin/test the system, as well as new ideas and implementations (I seen a few comments on the 'need' for a commuity chat function! Would be very helpful and can't see how it could be 'negative' as long as privacy is maintanable (at the author's own discretion)....

This is the first time I have got and read this page. and found it very interesting and am going to subscribe to it. I read all the blog's and I never seen anything about any way we can record our own calories burned, when we can. I read for calories in food. And could put down the calories I have eaten in some cases.Instead of looking for the food to match the calories I have had.
Also I ride a stationary bike [on account of arthritics]It recorded the calories I've burned].Would be nice to just type that in, instead of trying to find something that comes close.
I did not see this on all the pages I read. I quite keeping trace because i find it hard to match what I eat and do for exercise. I just follow my own menu and suppose this don't apply to all members.
Love your sight have been a member for about two yrs or more.

I have benefited so much from the Spark community and people commenting on things for "no reason at all" and some I am in contact with every day and look forward to their mail. It has helped me tremendously in my short time here, but I can see how we all benefit and will not be so lazy about reaching out -- it is a community effort!
Thanks all you Sparks!

Not a day goes by that I don't tell someone about this site. I went in active for a few months, but I knew where to go to get my flame rekindled. This is the best site ever (aside from of course) as far as I'm concerned and I will help as much as I can to keep the spark growing.

Gigicaron... go to the persons spark page and in the upper right hand corner, click on the "Add to My Ffriends" link.

By reigniting a spark for a spark friend, we in return continue to see our spark grow as well. When I am not losing as much weight as I want, fast enough, the time will not seem so long if I am helping others. May you have an Easter sparked with sparkled moments! Thanks! Nancy

I try to do this every once in awhile. That's why I try to keep my friends list short. I also try to read others blogs and comment on them even if they aren't friends. When I read huddles I try to see who needs help! Thanks for posting this idea. It is awesome.

Thanks for the ideas. I believe that the motivation you receive and the support that each person gets is tremendous on this site. I am amazed daily by new changes and try to comment to at least one new person a day. It is one reason this site is totally different from just "A weight loss website" Thanks to all who make it possible. SPREAD THE SPARK, I DO EVERY DAY!!!

I absolutely still cannot get over how awesome EVERYBODY here and throughout the entire site, is so excellent. I have been cyberin since dinosaurs ruled the Earth and have been told this/that how wonderful everybody is on other sites are, unfortunately quite the opposite and to say the least I have ended up here.I am so tickled I am finally home! I have NEVER EVER felt so welcomed anywhere! I've been readin people's words around the site and I kept seein {So much Love} I can NOW actually say I completely understand why, Now when I see those words I cannot help but smile. This is intended for EVERYBODY now and down the road. emoticon
This is the best place to b and the absolute best people are here.

I've only been here a short time but this is what I do, and if I think someone is depressed or has quit trying I make double the effort to try to reach them because being part of SP is more than losing weight. It's like a great big loving family who's trying to help each other. If someone falls by the side we can't just forget them. We have to do everything we can to help them, encourage them, and if possible help them get back on track.

This is such an awesome thing for all of us to do!! I have been doing that exactly!! I enjoy forming friendships, and being a good friend. I don't like being forgotten, so I try to make sure that I keep in touch and check up on the one's I have been active with. As well as welcoming as many as I can. We all like to be heard, and I know that it's impossible to reach all, but every little bit helps!! Fantastic Idea!!

Thank you for the reminder. I am afraid that life sometimes will keep us busy and we truly do forget to lift each other up.

Thank you for reminding us to reach outside of our own circles to bring others in that we have not yet met.

I for one needed this message.

Thank you for caring about each and every one of us here!! And encouraging us to do the same!
