I just can't seem to get around it that when I work night shift I go over calories for the day! I don't get much of a rest during the day before I go in, so I don't sleep through a meal. Also, I only work 2-3 nights a week usually, so I do feel hungry at the "normal" meal times. I've tried skipping breakfast or lunch and I felt ill all day. I've tried eating three meals with an extra filling healthy supper and I'm still hungry at about 2am. I work from 7pm-7am, and I have to be on my way to work by about 545pm at the lastest, and I don't get home until usually after 9am. I no longer feel that I need to run through mc donalds each morning after work, so I guess that's good, but I just don't know how to solve this problem. I didn't mention that I work at two different hospitals, and at one, the cafe is open all night so I can get fresh veggies, etc, if I want and I usually do, but at the other hospital, it's kind of a free for all and you munch on whatever's there unless you bring in something. it just seems like even when I make healthy choices, I go over calories. I would love any suggestions from any of you!

    This is a tough one! Although I don't work the night shift, I would suggest packing your meals with you. It will take some preparation from your part, but if you get in the habit of bringing enough food, drinks, and snacks w/ you, then maybe you won't be craving other things. As soon as you get your veggies home, pack them in little baggies....then you can just grab them and throw them in your lunch bag. That's been working for me.

    I worked night for 3 years in the early 90's. I hated the hours but loved the work. I usually slept until noon and could not fall back asleep. I felt like I was watching life happen.

    All I can tell you is what I do. I work full time 8 hour night shifts on Extended Care. The food issue is always a tough one...especially the munching part. Sometimes the junk that gets brought in is tough to turn down.
    I make sure I bring enough food with me to work to last my shift...with lots of fruits and vegies. Remembering to eat protein at the meals. I always have water on the go with me...sometimes it isn't hunger, it's thirst....some girls munch all night to keep awake...
    I have the best success when I faithfully use the nutrition tracking tool...
