Back at Work

I'm back at work after being off for almost 2 weeks due to severe tendonitis. I'm tired, and I'm a little sore (I climbed a fence yesterday to retrieve my dog), but overall it's going well. I miss being home all day though. I really enjoyed having time off. I'd love to be in a position to be able to work from home or not have to work at all. Last Thursday and Friday my husband was able to take a couple of vacation days so he and I got to spend some time together and have a mini-vacation (had to get up each morning and get kids off to school and home) and then on Monday the kids had no school because it was a teacher in-service day so we got to take a trip to our local frozen yogurt shop.

I love days like those and would really enjoy more of them.

My mother-in-law proposed this crazy idea today. She suggested we play "The Biggest Loser" in our family. We are each allowed to use our own program, and we'll have one (or two) set(s) of scales available for our official weigh-in. Right now I think that we have 4 or 5 contestants. We're gonna set up a grab bag of goodies for when we reach little goals and stuff, and it will also make us eat better when we all get together.

My program will pretty much be the same as what I've been doing. Avoid simple carbs, don't overload on the complex ones either, continue my metformin (for my PCOS) and keep moving. I don't do very well at tracking my food and exercise, but I know I'm doing it and eating the better stuff because I've lost 20.5 pounds since July 21.

We don't have all the details worked out yet, but I'm pretty excited about it.

Update For The Week

Okay, so this week has been pretty rough. On Tuesday at 1am, my oldest daughter woke up with an earache. We were up with her from 1-3 and during that time I was unable to straighten my right arm and it was sore at the elbow. I was able to drop her off with my sister-in-law who took her to the doc for me while I went to work. At the doc's office they found a lightning bug in her ear! They were able to get the ear out and they gave it to her as a souvenir.

Wednesday morning I woke up and I couldn't bend or straighten my arm, and it hurt 10 times worse than the day before. I picked up a sling at Walmart and went on to work. I made arrangements with my boss for me to leave early and go to the doctor. At the doc's office I got x-rays made and the doc decided it was severe tendonitis. I was given a shot of medrol and a script for some non-narc pain meds. I was also given a note listing my restrictions: No lifting or use of my right arm until 9/21.

Thursday morning I got up and it took me an hour to get ready for work, completely unable to use my right arm to do anything to get dressed. My kids had to help me get dressed (put on my shoes, tying my shoes, help with my shirt, etc). I was unable to do anything to fix my hair, so I just brushed it and pretended it looked good. :)
I got to work and gave my HR rep my doc note and she spoke to my manager and it was decided that I'd be sent home until I get a full release from my doc.

Friday morning I get up and get the kids off to school, I can move my arm a bit more, but it is still pretty bad. I'd made an appointment to see another doc at my medical office and decided to keep it. Today I was told that I need to see an orthopedic specialist. I have some swelling in my elbow, but no redness or heat so they don't think it's an infection, but drew blood to test for it anyway.

I don't know what's going on, but I hope that it heals fast. I was able to go ahead and start a claim for short term disability just in case I'm out more than 5 days.

I got the following information from my doctor this week via fax and have decided to go ahead and list it on here so that I can refer back to it later.

(Complex Carbohydrates and Protein)
Brown, Green, but NO White

Do Not Eat:
Fried meats
Yellow cheese (white is okay)
Peanut butter (nuts are okay)
Limit simple sugars and carbohydrates such as white rice, potatoes, sugar, white bread, whole wheat bread, potato bread, corn, macaroni, and pasta.

Eat These:
Lean Meats: Turkey, Chicken, Fish, Center Cut Beef, Pork
*Grilled, baked or broiled
Complex Carbohydrates: Dirty brown rice, Stone ground wheat or pumpernickel breads, Egg noodles
*Without the cheese sauces or gravy
Vegetables: Green, Red, Yellow (except list above)
*Steamed, boiled or baked (limit sauces)

Eat nuts as a snack. Almonds are best.
If you eat FRUIT, eat a banana or apple alone for breakfast
Simple sugars in very limited amounts (1 tsp in sugar or coffee)
Fat has approximately three times as many calories as an equal weight of sugar (Example: A teaspoon of butter has three times as many calories as a teaspoon of sugar). However, eating a large amount of simple sugars or carbohydrates may stimulate your appetite and make you drowsy.
Limit alcohol to one serving a day
You can eat protein and fats as long as you avoid carbohydrates. If you cheat you will GAIN WEIGHT.

OMG! I've done so well this last month, but it's "that time" and so I'm craving anything and everything sweet. I was at my in-law's today and was going to eat a fresh baked cookie (it was going to be my second) and my husband actually took it from my hand. I was ticked, and my feelings were hurt. I know he did it "for my own good", but still. What is worse was earlier in the evening I told him that I really wanted to go to Braum's and get a treat there, but he said, "no, you can't have that". GRRRR! That just makes it worse! My sister-in-law told me that I should be grateful that he's being so supportive and willing to hurt my feelings to make sure I eat right. I love him and I'm not really mad, but my feelings were hurt and I still want a hot fudge brownie sundae.

Also, my cramps are much worse this time than they've been before I started taking metformin, so I'm sure that my PMS symptoms all the way around are worse too. I've tried really hard not to be TOO bitchy at anybody and have been up front and let them know I'm extra cranky, lol.

I'm heading to bed so I'm not too cranky tomorrow. Maybe I can convince hubby to take me shopping for new jeans since mine are currently falling off me. I'm sure that will make me feel better and glad I didn't have the ice cream and cookies. :)

    Thanks for the support everyone! We went to one store for jeans today but I wasn't happy with the selection and then we went to a buffet for lunch. I filled up on fruit and a barbecue chicken breast. After all that I hit the grocery store and let me just say, I am a huge fan of the Yoplait Delights. I had the chocolate/raspberry last week and bought the lemon torte this week and so far the lemon is my fav. It's perfect for a sweet snack, and doesn't taste like yogurt! I like yogurt, but sometimes you want a snack like a pudding and the lemon one is awesome!.

    If it makes you feel any better, you aren't the only one suffering from that time of the month. I felt like I ate my way through the house today! Thankfully, animal crackers and watermelon are both reasonably low cal.

I know how much it sucks at the time, but that kind of DH support is fantastic. Many women are dealing with saboteurs. Consider yourself lucky.

    It feels so good to buy smaller clothing. I recently brought two pairs of jeans. Next Summer, they will be too large. I promise you if, you don't eat too many sweets, you will have one of the sweets moments of your life when you reach your goal weight. This is what helps me push through a craving. Happy shopping.

    The cravings are real, but my friend they are not what your head says you need. When t.o.m arrives the body is asking for iron rich foods and complex calories to keep up with making new blood cells..
Exercise is our best friend, it can dampen cramps as hormones made exercising decrease pain, it can dampen our appetite and give a feeling of happiness which is equal to what most people seek in a junkfood binge.. Sweet junkfood contents a source of sertonin, thats why many women flip out we want comfort.. But exercise is more user friendly without the bash on the head of real weight gained going over board.
10 points to your husband taking that cookie from you. He loves you and wants you to succeed, give him a huge kiss for daring to defy your whims..
Many women would kill to have a partner that actively helps to avoid defeat..

    New jeans really make you feel good. That was one of the best things I did for myself. In the last year, I have had to replace my jeans twice. Since I enjoy them so much, I get excited when they start getting too big for me. When not working I live in them. Enjoy that great feeling and appreciate the Hubby, good ones are hard to find
