Prize -Part 1 Need A Cook's Advice!!!

Monday, March 26, 2012

Wouldn't you know it, the bridge game I ran wasn't so smooth today. It looks like more people then me were asleep and I got a lot of director's calls and it seemed like the same three tables were always behind. Some people you just can't make play a little faster. Mom arrived early to pick me up to take me to claim my prize, but ended up waiting 20 minutes anyway. I finally made it to the YWCA at a quarter to three. I was told the office would be open until four. Low and behold the guy had left early (what is a male doing running what is essentially a women's facility anyway?) But I did get my perishables as they had to be left out in the fridge.

I got a nice bag of fresh spinach, some mint, a big bag of crushed walnuts, a cooking onion (Mom cut it up for me), a small clove of garlic -never seen one that small lol, some curry masala spice (does it ever smell good), green lentils and olive oil from Italy that is only processed by mechanical means -so no additives. and sun dried tomatoes! So I am not a cook, but I am assuming these ingredients are meant to go together to produce a meal. Beyond knowing you put walnuts in a spinach salad, I am not 100 % sure what to do with the sun dried tomatoes and mint, is that for the salad too, or do they go with the lentils?? I am assuming the garlic and onion go with the lentils. I am guessing the olive oil is to spritz on the salad as you don't cook with it.
You see, I am a raw food vegetarian so don't really cook at all if I can avoid it. I depend on Mom for my veggie chili and lentil treats. I don't carry anything for cooking in my apartment -no oil, flour, sugar, etc. So if I need something like soup base to make a masala I will have to go buy some. Stuff I currently have on hand are green beans, sweet potato, bell peppers and carrots..
Suggestions from any foodies out there?
Really tired and sore, hope to hit the sack early tonight..
Hope you all have a good sleep and a terrific Tuesday
Hugs,
Linda

I love to cook but often need the guidance of recipes. There is a show on FoodTV called "Chopped." Chefs are presented with a basket of mystery ingredients and have to produce a dish from them. I know I could never do something as challenging as that. However, I do love sweet potatoes in a masala dish. I've never really worked with lentils. I'm sure you can come up with something interesting and palate pleasing.

Hope you get good sleep tonight. emoticon

Weird that you got that conglomeration of stuff and no recipes . . . .

You could cook the lentils until they're tender and saute everything else except the spinach and the mint. Once everything is cooked, stir in the spinach until it is all wilted and then mix it all in with the cooked lentils.

I'd do something else with the mint. It's not a taste that I would add to any of the other stuff - but what do I know?

I love spinach salad. All your ideas will work. The recipes I've seen with the tomatoes are all cooked. ??? The basket looks nice and you could use the things however you'd want.

CRYSTALJEM 3/27/2012 12:22PM

I'm in a bit of a rush so I don't have my recipes handy, but you could use the tomatoes and mint in either or both of the dishes. For that matter you can even do everything as one dish if you want. Go easy on the masala. I love it, but some blends can be quite potent. You can cook with the Olive oil, just don't make the heat too hot. I'd leave the mint fresh regardless of where you are using it and add it at the end.

Man, wish I was closer and we could do some cooking together... it would be so much fun. I you decide you like lentils and curry, let me know, I have a couple of recipes that at least I really like. If you like stew/soup combos, check out some recipes for dahl (or dal)

Enjoy your prize! CJ

There are different ways of making it, but it sounds like the remaining ingredients are to make a lental Dal, which is an indian dish. I'm not sure about the mint, but the curry, garlic, oil and onions, and even the sundried tomatoes make a dal. You can also add some cumin and coriander,
Have fun

I Won!

Monday, March 26, 2012

Started the day taking it easy. Then had Mom's home made Mac & Cheese for lunch -used double cream brie, cream cheese and cheddar cheese, yummy!! Had a cup and a half. This is my all time favorite comfort food and I can't remember when I had it last :) Then we went to Costco where I had to be ultra conservative in my spending as I was getting that broke at the end of the month feeling. I had an interesting sample -a protein bar that actually had 32 g of protein!! never seen one with that high a count. It was 320 calories though, but if you were going on a serious long hike or climb, this would be a great refuel. Sorry, addled brain that I am, can't remember the brand, first time I had seen it there.
Then it was home and I decided I couldn't do nothing and had to work off that lunch, so Mom and I went for a two hour walk and hike (took the paved path one way and the rough path back).
The geese and gulls have returned in full force: It was neat seeing the white birds in one area of the sandbar and the dark birds in the other..

Lots of tracks on the new snow:

It was a dull dreary overcast day for most of my four day stay..

Then it was off to my brother's where supper was home made white buns with real butter, pulled pork and boiled broccoli, cauliflower and baby cut carrots. Dessert was a kind of parfait, made out of a two bite brownie, chocolate pudding, cherry pie filling and whipping cream on top, was good :)
Didn't stay to play cards, had too much stuff to haul home from Mom's, as well as I had to go to the club to set up for the game I direct on Monday. When I got home, I checked my messages.
The seventh and last message said I won the grand prize package of the Health & Wellness Fair! Involves a one year membership to the YWCA, towel service & locker and three sessions with a personal trainer! I could not believe it! I NEVER win anything! Ironically, this would be difficult for me to utilize as the location is far away from me and would be difficult to find the time for all the bus transfers it would take to get there. Buses on my side of town run every hour and never meet transfers downtown, they are a pain. But also, I already qualified for a free pass to the City's fitness facilities which are much closer to me. I don't know if they will do it, but I am going to see if they will let my Mom have it in my place, I can only hope.
Giving thanks my special friend Lori was not seriously hurt in a horrible car wreck. Spark on Lori!
Goodnight all, have a Marvelous Monday,
Hugs,
Linda

Health & Wellness Fair!

Saturday, March 24, 2012

It was a lot smaller then I expected. One display for organic fair trade coffee, three displays on Moms to be, footwear, climbing, a new local wellness magazine, MS display, A personal trainer demostrating a swiss ball as well as a bosu. I tried both and on the bosu was able to balance on one leg. I couldn't quite get the hang of picking both feet up off the ground on the Swiss ball. Then there was a hooping display. The room was way too small to demostrate it here, so they went to the gym. I tried the hooping, didn't do the worst, but I couldn't seem to stop it from riding up higher on me -most had trouble with it dropping. Its actually harder then it looks, I found it tough. Tried to get the hang of it for 15 minutes, dropped a few times. Then I was running out of time to make it to My Curves Zumba. I made it just as they were going into the second machine, so I stayed at the end to get the machine I missed. The Zumba class was small and a good thing as there wasn't much space to move in -the second class only had three people!
Enjoyed myself this morning, although the cold and new snow wasn't very welcome, we will probably go for a walk later today!
Have a Super Sparking Saturday!
Hugs,
Linda

Freezing Friday

Saturday, March 24, 2012

We went out for our first walk of the morning. Wasn't expecting to feel that cold. Bone chilling, get deep in your pores cold. Not the temperature so much as the humidity making it seem so cold. The dark overcast day didn't help any.
It tried to snow all day, but nothing much came down. Spent most of the day reading and resting. Then we walked over the bridge to go to Wal Mart as Mom needed some flour to make muffins. Back home and more rest and relaxation. Watched an excellent movie on Turner Classics Jane Eyre. I had never seen Orson Welles as a young actor. It was very good. I have not read the book. It was interesting seeing Elizabeth Taylor as a young girl in a small part at the beginning.
I have a dilemma. Tomorrow is a three hour health and wellness show only for the one day and morning at the YWCA. My Curves Zumba runs smack dab in the middle of it, so I would not have the time to get to both :( Mom wants to see the health show as would I, but I have done nothing much for exercise and feel I need something.. While the pain eases up when I am resting, I do feel it ramping up with just walking, but the rest of me would feel better moving.
Two days in a row without exercise, can I do this? I could always try the noon hour aquafit instead. Maybe my cramping toe would give me a break.. Just don't feel like hitting the pool when its so cold out...
Good night all, sleep well and have a super Saturday!
Hugs,
Linda

Dr. Appointment

Friday, March 23, 2012

I saw my Rheumy today and she was pleased with my blood work and saw no reason to change my medicines, as on the surface, it appears they are working. She could offer no help for my toes, saying there is nothing they can do, but she has offered me a referral to a Dr. specializing in sleep problems. She wants me to splint my bad right hand more, with a working splint as well as my resting splint. I find the working splint uncomfortable and really bulky so I haven't been using it, but am finding my right hand is really getting sore, so will have to get to it.
Mom and I then shopped around and I found a good deal on some Eddie Bauer pants, a nice heavy duty brushed cotton in grey with zippered pockets, just in time as our weather has gotten colder and very windy and my sweatpants aren't warm enough.
Then Mom got her hair cut, was spontaneous and ended up liking the young man who did it, realizing he really knew how to handle difficult curly hair. It was interesting to watch. He would actually take a lock, twist it tightly around and the cut on the strand, never seen anything like it.
The we went to an Asian restaurant and I had ginger chicken -not breaded, but boiled, with a ginger sauce with real pieces of ginger in it, was on a bed of very fragrant Basamati rice..
Then we walked part way home, but the blowing dust and cold was too miserable so we stopped at an Art gallery, and I had hot chocolate (made with real dark chocolate in water) while she had a coffee.
Then it was home for a relaxing afternoon and evening. I was really feeling my sore muscles and iced up. Not used to the Curves machines yet.
Another brain addled moment - I forgot I was to play bridge with the Probus group today, so the guy who offered to kindly give me a ride would have got no answer from my apartment :(( When I realized I was supposed to go, it would have been too late to get him as he said he was having lunch downtown. So he would have gone all the way back to pick me up. Bad, bad, bad this memory of mine -I get distracted way too easily and forget what I am supposed to be doing :((
Hope you all get a good sleep and have a Fantastic Friday!
Hugs,
Linda

I know how you feel about the memory, it probably is very related to lack of sleep. When I exercise at night it tends to make it hard for me to get to sleep, so don't know if that is a factor with you or not. You're making me hungry for Asian food, haven't had that in a while.
