Started out the same as yesterday. Tried to stay in bed and rest longer, but lack of sleep still rules. I once again had breakfast and medicines before I exercised. I must admit though, I far and away prefer exercising first thing in the morning after hydrating. So after my breakfast, I went to the club to do some month end prep and other work. Was late getting home. It was noon and I was doing my exercise, 20 minutes on the elliptical of intervals and 35 minute walking with weights cardio DVD. I could feel my muscles after that. So hate being out of shape again :( Takes me so long to get back into it. So I was so late there was no trip to the Farmer's Market so I was forced to stock up at the grocery store. Mom's comment being I got twice as much stuff for the same price. But when it comes to food, I prefer the best and won't scrimp on the price. I have very few expenses as I don't do much so I can afford the best quality food, no excuses.
It was 4 pm before I got to Mom's, and so did some dead heading. The cool, overcast day turned into a nice warm, sunny day. Can't believe the weather here. Meanwhile some of my Spark buddies are getting hammered by Irene :( Was watching it on the news. New York being shut down. Wow. Can't imagine that!
I watched some movies while Sparking, then the news and then its time to hit the couch :))

    Glad you have been able to modify your schedule during this time. I hate when the pain gets the best of me in the mornings. Take it slow and rebuild your stamina, there is no real reason to rush and injure something.

Our weather here is extremely hot and more humid than normal. Stay healthy and I hope your pain level decreases rapidly.

    I refuse to pay those outrageous prices for organic produce....I just wash the heck out of the produce I buy at the grocery. I do shop at stores like Trader Joe's and Whole Foods as they have products there that we like better then the regular grocery store.

    I agree, too, about the quality food! Drex always gripes about having to stir the expensive peanut butter we get, but then when he gets the "cheap" kind, he realized he doesn't even like it any more!

    I agree with buying GOOD food! I won't eat peaches that are NOT organic. They have the highest pesticides in them. So Sam's every year has Organic peaches. I buy them till they are no more. YUM. Probably should buy extran and freeze them!!!

    That "unable to rest" thing is soooo tough. I try not to fret about not sleeping, assume that when I really need it, it will come: but . .. easier said than done. You're doing your very best on the other two "pieces", exercise and nutrition, at any rate, and that has to help.

    Wishing you total restorative rest. Hope you can find the key to good sleep. Everything is so much better rested. I understand about the good quality food. I have been enjoying the extravagance of beautiful cherries -- a delicious, healthy joy! We were lucky that Irene did not come near us, even though Florida has had more hurricanes (113 since they started counting) than any other state. My stepson in Virginia lost a beautiful willow tree in his yard, but all are safe. We are thankful. Again, do you best to rest, Linda. Take care, Marsha

Never Giving Up!!

It was a rough day from the get go! The usual lack of sleep, then waking up in a lot of pain. What the hay? These were more than just muscle aches!! I had pain even my hands which haven't bothered me for a long time. When RA has done all the damage it can, you are finally released from the pain, and that describes the mess that are my hands. I was due for my methotrexate, so I decided to take all my medications with breakfast first thing instead of exercising right away like I normally do. So I waited for anything to take effect, and waited, but other than a little loosening up, I was still hurting. So I got on the elliptical. Wow! Doesn't usually feel that bad. I kept going, hoping it would get better, some parts did, but by the end of 40 minutes of intervals, I was ready to keel over! So frustrating dealing with this uncooperative body!!! So I hit the shower, had lunch, and hobbled my way to the club. I was not going to give in and use my scooter. got to show the body who is boss here. It was another gorgeous, sunny warm day and I wanted to enjoy it! I did some club work and then schmoozed with some people. How nice of some people to welcome me back so warmly, saying the club isn't the same without me!! I went on to have a good game, coming first in my section and second over all, so a great tourney for me, with 2 firsts and a 2nd! Felt good, all though I still suffer some mental lapses with my lack of sleep. I forgot twice that a card had been played and as a result didn't get all the tricks I should have on two hands. I am normally not this bad, but I know my game has gone downhill because of the severe sleep deprivation. Its very hard on memory. I have to be careful to write things down where I can see them not to forget things like appointments and to do lists.
In spite of ride offers and people concerned about me walking on my slightly swollen foot, I refused them and enjoyed my walk home in the warm sunshine.
Still feeling awful after my supper medications, should be good for my sleep tonight lol. Oh well, its what you hand you were dealt and its up to you to play it the best you can! Never give up! Tomorrow is another day!

    Sorry to hear about your painful day. I fully understand and congratulate you on not giving in totally to the pain. I know how easy it is to do so. I hope you had a great night's sleep and feel much better today.

    Linda, I just don't know if I would be as determined as you are if I had the challenges you face with your body! It's incredible how you press on in the face of extreme adversity, fighting your way through pain and still maintaining a cheerful, positive attitude! I'm sure you get frustrated, but you use that frustration to press on! How I wish we were neighbors! I would love to know you in person and spend time together! I hope your weekend is great and that you get some good sleep and less pain! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

60 Minutes Cardio!

I had the day off today. So I was going to see how I did with some longer cardio. I did my 30 minutes of intervals on the elliptical and felt pretty good. So I did my kickboxing DVD, the one that does 10 minutes segments, so that if I found one set too much, I could quit. The first was focusing on arms, so I felt confident with it. I could feel my muscle aches from the strength training yesterday though. There were cardio burst parts which I did high impact, but gently compared to my usual full force high pounding self. I quickly discovered my foot wasn't too happy with even the lower impacts and a couple of times I converted it to no impact (no jumps). So I did the next 10 minute segment which focused on kicks and lower body. Hello hip! I have missed your pain! Not! I guess the time off was giving my hip a rest and now that it was moving again, it wasn't too happy lol. I quickly forgot about what my foot was doing when the hip started going..I made it through that one and the last was core training. Go squats and waist twists and crunches! I could see my foot wasn't happy with the bob and weave and the pivoting of kicks and punches combinations. At the end of my workout, I couldn't help noticing I had a fat foot and my toes looked like little sausages. So I immediately put it up and iced both sides for an hour and 15 minutes. It was sore, but NOT painful, and that is the difference, but the Dr. said if its swells to back it off. So, less tomorrow, maybe just the elliptical and some upper body strength training. I was going to walk to the club today, but felt the foot had had enough, so took my cart out. I came home and had lunch, then fell into bed and was astonished that I had slept for three hours!! I guess all the lack of sleep occasionally wipes me out. I have had nothing but three and four broken hours for the last week, which is, unfortunately my usual :(
Now it is down to some overdue club work. I will do this last bit of work in my easy chair with the computer on my lap and my foot up as it does not need to be connected to the internet for this 'paper work' I will sit there relaxing, listening to some rocking music and my foot will be happy too! Data entry, the drudgery of my job.

    Your foot is not likin' the impact. Glad you backed off and got it up. It will heal. I've been neglecting my cardio, but I've been so behind in the garden. Trying to keep up. It won't be long until frost and it will all be over with for this year.

Crunches Bad For Lower Back :(

I have always had chronic lower back pain, so when I read a recent article on Spark that standard crunches and sit ups are bad for the lower back, I was 'crushed' to learn this :( Just Google this topic and you will see numerous fitness and health sites agreeing on this. But there are ways to get rid of the belly fat. The true and best way is to simply lose the fat by regular cardio and strength training. Naturally, the ab toners they DO recommend are the plank variants and also being on hands and knees (bird dog), which of course, I am unable to perform :( So maybe I am stuck with this permanent pot :( I have lost all the weight I can, can't afford any more, but I have a high body fat% because I lost muscle mass as well being unable to perform serious strength training because of my 5 lb lift limit..So you will never see any bikini photos of me, that is for sure, but also because I do have lots of loose, wrinkled skin as well. But I am still happy with my lighter weight and it feels good to have nice cardio fitness.
Today, I did the elliptical, my first cardio since my foot surgery, and it felt good. I can see where the layoff has taken out some of my fitness though, as I was slower than normal. I am chomping at the bit to get at my kickboxing DVD's, but as walking is still sore and slow, I can see I am not ready yet. I am getting a little impatient ;) I weighed in for my RA team and its 120, so happy with that.
I changed my tracker to reflect 30 minutes cardio daily instead of zero and was shocked that my calories jumped up to 1960 from 1650!! That is where they were for 60 minutes cardio daily, so I wonder if something has gone wrong there..
Anyway, it feels great to be doing SOMETHING again! My elliptical says I burned 287 calories in 1/2 hr, while Sparks shows 238 calories. My elliptical does take age, weight, height and sex into consideration, as well as resting heart rate, so I would tend to think its pretty accurate for me..
Came tied for 1st in my section at bridge today, but a low %, so no overalls this time either. One last try on Friday with a very good partner, but with whom I have not played with in months..
The new bridge electronic scoring system we have now is fun and efficient, making the director's job a lot easier, but it also means more sitting and less motion as you no longer have to go pick up slips and enter scores after each round. So this job has become more sedentary then active now :( This will be great while my foot is recovering, but boring when its fully healed and I am chomping at the bit to MOVE!

    Good to hear you are healing up so well - as for the lower back, there are specific exercises that can help it - my physical therapist says ab work is GOOD for my back problems so don't jump to conclusions based on an article - maybe it varies by which type of back pain it is but the PTs I've seen all say that lack of muscle tone, esp lack of core muscle strength, leads to back problems.

    I'm sure the kickboxing will be all the sweeter for the wait, frustrating though I am sure it is for you at the moment. :-)
Shame about the crunches. Weird though, because it is my neck that prevents me from doing them. :-)

    Yeah, give your body time to heal properly, otherwise all the pain and hardship you've been through to get where you are will be wasted!
While most of us like to reflect on things that we are missing or are not allowed or cannot do, one should pause for a while and just look at what you do have. My Mom's favourite saying was "there is always someone who has less than you, so if you are worrying that you have no shoes think of the person who has no feet". But I need not tell you that it is very helpful to always be positive - you constantly amaze me by all your achievements! emoticon emoticon emoticon

    Hmm ... I can believe it. When I do crunches, my lower back always "complains". I thought it was just because I have a weak core.

How much weight did you lose and over how long a time? I'm planning to lose more than half my body weight, and I'm wondering if I'll look like a sharpei when I'm done. emoticon

    Hi Linda,
I know that you know the time will come for you to kickbox and do the other things you are craving. I think your current challenge is to take your newly healed body and do things you can do that will give you that exercise rush. Use the internet and this site and your other resources to look for things that suit your intensity and interest levels!

It's great that the electronic scoring system is working so well--and it sounds like another challenge might be coming your way there. You know you can handle it and turn things into exactly what you desire for yourself with a bit of creative thinking.

    Oh dear, so sorry about the "pot". You are ALOT younger than I , so I figure mine is age related....though I do have high hopes of it being gone one day....

Understand about the body fat too. Must be some way to deal with it....

well, cardio fitness is really good for you. I know with being more fit, my resting pulse is usually in the 60's, which amazes me for a woman my age...

How long will it be before you can do the kick boxing again?
