Routines.

Thursday, October 11, 2012

In an effort to stop my seasonal weight gain I have started running again...and not like I used to. This spring I was pretty into jogging for a few months but I rarely pushed myself, it was more of a relaxation technique than a challenge.
One day I was doing my favorite new hobby - surfing pinterest- and saw a few pins about running and ways to motivate yourself to push harder. LEt's get one thing straight, I have NEVER been good at running. I was always one of the stragglers in gym class who marveled at people with 6 minute miles. It's not an activity I enjoy but to be honest, with the great weatther and my penchant for loud thumping music I found the idea appealing.
So I did my research and downloaded the MapMyRun app for my iphone. I got some good tunes and went for it..I took the same route I usually jog, just to see my time and get an idea for a baseline measurement. My 2 miles took me almost 30 minutes..yikes...what a turtle!!
But I did that route three more times last week, adding a few blocks here and there and pushing myself along the way...Here's where you start getting some advice:
emoticon I would run from one driveway to the next then slow to a walk for two drive ways...Each day I pushed a little farther- run for 2 driveways walk for one..three driveways walk for one.. It kept me from getting too winded but it kept me going.
emoticon Sunday I did a 'big' run for the week- 4.5 miles. I decided I wanted to do a longer run once each week in addition to my daily work outs. This would be something that would help with my endurance..let me just say, it was painful. I came home with four blisters and a new found appreciation for band aids. Still, it felt GREAT to accomplish that! I can't wait for my 5 miles on sunday!
emoticon This week I started running one full block at a time, let me say, it's not as hard as you think! I'm really impressed at my progress so far. I never hold myself back either, if I feel I can do 2 or 3 blocks I just go for it!
emoticon I make myself go every day. This sounds daunting, and some days IT IS. But even if I only do a mile, I still go.
I of course have noticed a difference when I run and I have been dealing with the blisters and the cold weather..but yesterday I had my first reward.. I was running up 2 flights of stairs (IN HEELS) because I was late for a meeting. When I got to the top I noticed something amazing- I wasn't winded. I didn't have to stop outside the conference room to catch my breath. It was a major victory.
So now I just need to get rid of my monster blister (my own fault for not adjusting my laces!) and I'll be ready to tackle my long sunday run.
The gist of it is this, it feels good to have a routine..I come home, get dressed and go run. I even look forward to it now and am disappointed if I can't make it. I think this might just stick..

Well done you, that's how I started running and now I can't get enough of it, if I can't get outside I make sure I get on the treadmill but I enjoy the outdoors more.

Good luck and keep up the good work.

The title says it all! That's what I sound like on my bike, haha Not only am I terrible at maintaining my balance but I also get completely FREAKED OUT if I go f aster than a five year old can pedal. but you know what? It was a heck of a lot of fun.
emoticon
I am hoping to go out again in a couple hours, when it's still light but traffic has died down a bit.
emoticon
I WANT to go back out! :) So awesome
To reward myself I stopped at the little fast food place down the street and got a diet coke. It was a major reward because I've been trying to give up diet soda in an effort to help my stomach. The sad thing is? It does help :( I am so sad I have to give it up, and I'm doing my best but I still have one about once a day. Soon it will be one every couple days and then none. I've stopped keeping it in the house at least so if I want one I have to really work for it!

This week has already been beyond stressful and it's only tuesday. I'm doing my best to keep my head up and stay positive, that's all you can really do right? Plus I figure if I distract myself with things like riding bikes and hooking up my wii fit I won't have time for all those worries and guilty thoughts to enter my brain. No, everything will be fine. I know it in the moments when my supportive family and friends tell me they're proud of me for biking a few blocks or for pushing myself toward something I really want.
I CAN do it all. Just watch me

little goals

Monday, June 20, 2011

Little goals sometimes are exactly what I need. Something small to accomplish keeps me motivate as I add more and more difficult things in..so it was not a huge challenge last week to get more movement in and eat more veggies.
emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
Every night I made sure I included at least one veggie in my meal.
emoticonI also started including them in my lunches.
emoticon It's taken some getting used to on my stomach's behalf, and I've made a few concessions but I think I'm getting used to it!
emoticon Saturday night I went to a boutique opening and to a pizza place with friends. emoticon I had a salad instead of pizza..it was ALL veggie salad! :)
I kept my boozing to a minimum too emoticon
Every chance I had to eat more veggies, I took. my body is slowly starting to feel stronger
emoticon
emoticonYesterday I spent the afternoon working in the yard and it was HOT! Cutting down trees and hauling branches and dead bushes emoticon it was a good workout.
emoticonLast night I asked my brother if I can use his bike. He brought it over right away!! It needs a tune up but I'm excited to bike to some nearby places rather than driving.
This week for example is supposed to be in the 70s everyday and emoticon I want to try biking to work!
It would save money on gas and give me a good work out too! I have a friend here who can give me a ride in case of rain emoticon
I can also bike to and from the pool emoticon and starbucks! emoticon
So this week here are my goals:
emoticonContinue to eat at least one vegetable with every meal
emoticon Take the bike in for a tune up
emoticon give it a try!
emoticon enjoy a movie night at home this weekend (with popcorn!) as a reward for succeeding last week
emoticon drink more water, all that exercise is going to make you need it :)

Eat your Veggies

I started off so well intentioned! Last night was pure craziness. A craigslist seller contacted me and said I could buy this enormous great tv and stand for $35 but I had to go get it THAT night. So we did. Straight after work (no snack). I was tired from lifting the heavy thing and feeling shaky by the time I was driving back home so I stopped to grab a sandwich. That was fine! It was great and not bad at all. After I was feeling better I cooked up some stirfry and brown rice for lunch for today and tomorrow. I did well.
emoticon
This morning I woke up feeling pretty exhausted (I just found Teen Mom on streaming netflix=late night). I wasn't in the mood to eat so I just had some toast and took off. I was hungry when lunch time came around and I scarfed my veggies and rice..big mistake. emoticon
Vegetables have a tendency to give me a terrible stomach ache when I eat them on an empty stomach. I always need to have them with a carb or a slice of cheese. One would think the rice would have taken care of this, but no such luck.
emoticon
I did NOT get french fries
emoticon
I DID get pretzels...and a gew M&Ms from a friend. I am frustrated that I wasn't able to follow through with my plan for the day.
I'm thinking for dinner I'm going to keep it simple with some soup, bread and cheese.
emoticon
I'll stay within my calories. I just wish I was eating better food. I haven't gone over calories at all this week actually, and I haven't been trying! The problem is that it's junk.
My body needs veggies...It needs whole foods..It's just going to take time to REALLY get back into it.
Tomorrow I'll pack a snack so I don't eat lunch on an empty stomach.
