Running Madness...

Went for my run today. Did 8 reps of walk 1 run 4 (week 8 of program). The sky was pretty cloudy when I started, and I thought to myself that if it started to rain on me, I'd turn around and cut my run short. But of course it only drizzled on me until about 15 seconds left of my 4th set (1.8 miles down the path). Nice.


So I got wet (rained/sleeted/ I even saw a couple of snowflakes) on my way back. It was very chilly when I was done, but the one benefit is that I think it improved my pace! :)


I did 3.6 miles in the 40 minute workout- a much better pace than Sunday, and that lets me know that I can absolutely do the 5k next week in less than 45 minutes.


I'm thinking that after the 5k next week I am going to transition to this program, and try to run an entire 5k. I know all three of you could do it now- but you're much better runners than I am. It looks a little like what Bart had Annie do last week with the running for 20 minutes.

8k!

I did it!
8k (5.72 miles) in 1:10 (70 minutes- that means I was averaging a 12 minute mile).

Me before the race- their computers were down, so they had us sign in for our numbers, and get our other stuff after the race.

My husband, who is THE BEST jogged ahead a bit so he could take a picture. This was around the halfway point. Other than this, though, he stayed with me the whole way!

Me and my BFF after the race- she had a faster pace, and finished in an hour even. Her hubby was able to do the whole thing in 42 minutes! Wow!
Anyway, it was A BLAST. I really had fun. I'm a little sore today, but I slept so hard last night! I'm eager to do another!

Tough week.

It's been a tough week.
I had my colloquium residency for my PhD program Thursday- Sunday. There was NO time to run, so I missed day three of running.
I did, however, make a loop around the block during every break we had, so I managed to average 10,000+ steps each day!
That's cool.
I also was staying on the 12th floor, and NEVER took the elevator.
So I feel pretty good about that.
Getting home Sunday evening, the weather was terrible, and we were stuck inside all day Monday because of the Hurricane.
I wasn't happy. My dogs weren't happy.
My husband and I instituted a rule that every 20 minutes we all had to get up for a 3 minute dance party. That made it tolerable.
On Tuesday, the worst of the storm had passed, so I took the pups out, and even though it was raining, we ran.
I hate running in rain. It was gross. I was wearing my raincoat, which kept the rain off me, but made my sweaty shirt underneath darned unbearable.
So what's the problem?
I've not lost weight in the last few weeks. I've gained.
I know that the scale is only one factor in determining how I am meeting my goals, but still...
ugh.
I don't think I've been very good about tracking food lately. And I know I've been drinking more than I should. So.
November 1. New Month.
I'm going to keep running (I have an 8K this weekend, and a 5K in two weeks). My goal is to be able to run the 5K in entirety.
I am going to get back to tracking, and make sure I keep to my calories.
I really want to be super in shape when I see my fam in December for our annual ski trip!

5k week 6 revisited

My husband and best friend are also training with me. He had a tough week last week with a pulled muscle, so he did week 5 twice. He's starting week 6 training this week. After some thought, my friend and I have decided to repeat week 6. Week 6 is tough, 1 minute walking, 3 minutes running. Week 7 is even harder- 1 minute walking 4 minutes running.

I did day 1 of week 6 again today. I'm glad we're doing this one twice- with all the stress of the colloquium this weekend, I don't think I could manage week 7 this week. I'm working on my PhD, and my third and final residency starts on Thursday.

Anyway, it was a good run. For the most part. My right ankle was a little sore, but not too bad. It was damned cold, too. My car thermostat read 37 degrees when I got to IHRT. (Oh- discovered this nifty thing about my car- if the temperature drops into the 30's, it displays a little snowflake and dings once at you to get your attention. Gotta love that German engineering.) I started off my run in a hat, gloves, and sweatshirt, but peeled down to my shirtsleeves mid way through.

Lots of deer and squirrels on the path today, and Jack somehow got all muddy, even though we were on the trail the whole time. So he got YET ANOTHER bath this week.

I'm wondering when I'm going to get a chance to run this weekend, the residency schedule runs from 7am-8pm each day. I guess if all else fails, I can run on Sunday afternoon.


Anyway, my friend sent me a word problem that was part of her math lesson she taught today- seems there is hope for me yet.

Alex and Barrie run in a marathon. Alex runs at a steady pace of 7 mph, while Barrie uses the Galloway method of racing, running 4 minutes 8 mph and then walking for 1 minute at 3.5 mph. If each maintains this pace for the entire race, who will finish the race first?
Barrie will finish first. His average pace can be calculated using the equation (4/5)*8+(1/5)*3.5= 7.1 mph


  


5k week 6

Wow. So a distinct change from week 5 to week 6. This week we are doing 8 reps of 1 min walk, 3 min run. Not too much longer (32 minutes), but much more running time (18 vs. 24 min).

Good news though- not only was there a gorgeous sunrise while I was on IHRT today, but I also saw a family of deer on the path, and I was able to do the run. The weather was gorgeous- I peeled down to my t-shirt after the 3rd. set. and I was good and sweaty at the halfway point. The last set (8) seemed to take much longer than 3 minutes during the running portion, but I even managed a sprint during the last three sets (just a few seconds or so).

I figured out how to reset the interval timers on my watch, so that was cool! Also, I didn't know you don't have to silence the beeping after your intervals reset, but figured that out today. It will beep for 6 seconds, then stop.

Anyway, I'm starving today- went home after my run and had some grits (I just can't make them right) and kale chips when I got to work.
