I am more insane than previously thought

Friday, November 14, 2008

So despite every single comment in my previous post suggesting that it was a bad idea, I've signed up for the women's half marathon, which takes place on May 31/09 (a week after the Ottawa Marathon). Common fitness sense dictates that this is bad idea all around, but here are my reasons for signing up:

- I do not want to put off running a marathon for another year. Training will be much more difficult with a baby and my motivation to train is so high right now.

- I would hate myself forever for missing out on the inaugural race experience. Therefore skipping the half to focus on the marathon is not an attractive option either.

- I WILL be taking at least a year off from racing after both races...plenty of recovery time!

- Plenty of other people do crazier things when running (marathon every day, ultras, Goofy challenge) - this is pretty tame in comparison. I am NOT a person who backs away from a physical challenge and I am up for it!

You can do it... just pay extra attention to your body during your training and use the 2nd race more as a nice recovery run. I just ran an inaugural race here in Florida and it was fantastic.. definitely an experience you want to be part of!

I think it's awesome!! Yes it's ambitious but it sounds like you're giving yourself plenty of time to train and prepare your body for the stress it's going to go through between the 2 races. Then again I'm probably biased because that's totally something I would do (and I'd probably call myself insane too!). Good luck and enjoy your training!

Good luck with both races, you are so motivated! I'm sure you will know after the marathon whether you can combat the half, i look forward to following you through your training x

AGGGGGH!

Wednesday, November 12, 2008

There's an inaugural women's half marathon on May 31st that was sold out. It's modelled like the Nike Women's Marathon, with chocolate stops and massages (but no firefighters with Tiffany necklaces unfortunately) Because it was sold out, I signed up for the full marathon instead, which is a week earlier. But now I got an email saying spots have opened up in the half.

I know that it would be suicide to run a full marathon on May 24th and then a half on May 31st.

A friend just suggested that I run the half at an easy pace (run/walk) because I really do want to be part of the experience.

Crazy? or doable?

Here's one more thing - my husband and I are planning on TTC after the marathon, so I *could* go out with a bang and I'd have the next year or so off from racing to recover.

hi there! i stumbled across your page... just wanted to say it IS totally possible!! i have a friend who is doing the Goofy Race & A Half Challenge at Disneyworld in January... a half marathon on Saturday, then a full marathon on sunday - yes, the same weekend! It's insane, but the point is, people do it!! ;-) You know your body best and know how much recovery you need... if you have the endurance and have trained properly so you won't injure yourself - go for it!!

I'm going to agree with all the other comments so far. There are people out there that seem to be indestructible and can handle doing that sort of thing, but not most us! Now I say this without really knowing what your endurance level is. For me, not having completed a marathon before, there's no way I could do that. I think switching the full to a half and taking a bit off your pace is probably the best idea. But if you decide to go for it all, just be comfortable in advance with the fact that injury may follow...especially if you're not a really seasoned distance runner.

JMHO but I think it would be too much to run a half a week after a full marathon. A full takes a lot out of you. The first week after mine I was sore in places I had never been sore in before. So I think it comes down to which one do you want to do more? Is the full marathon a goal or is the inaugural half more meaningful? Gail is right you can probably down grade the full to a half and then be able to run both races.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

I am with Gail, after my marathon I was cooked and 4 weeks is the minimum for recovery, to try and do both is not a good idea for me, pick which one means the most and go with it, and if you do decide to do both, good luck and take care. Gary

You know what I think I would do...I would down grade the marathon to a 1/2 marathon. Most races allow you to do that....unless your heart is truly set on running a full marathon. I ran a marathon over a month ago and I still have not been able to convince myself to run 13.1 miles. I did make it to 12 miles last Sunday but that was 4 weeks after my marathon. If after these two races, if you still have the desire to run a full....run it in the fall, or use these two half marathons as training towards another up coming marathon. Still, this is just my thoughts, ultimately you have to do what you truly feel like doing. gail

I just read it!! Great article.

Now, I have a question--that might be ironed out by looking harder, but was wondering what you would say....WHERE do you find a trainer? (as in, one that would be close to me) Is there a site that would list those specifically in the United States (one of the sites listed showed a bunch in Canada, but not really in the US)?

Also, looks like some great links off of your page (kettlebellfit.ca) that I'll have to check out as well!!

Thanks for all the info!! And you look GREAT!
