Halfway through MTC!

Friday, April 03, 2009

So today was the last workout this week for Making the Cut, and that brings an end to Week 2! WOOT! :D

I'm really proud of myself for sticking with this -- this is the first time I've done the full program with two reps of each circuit. And I was thinking today about how far I've come that I'm capable of doing what I'm doing right now. Previously I had never attempted doing any other workout on the same day as Making the Cut. It had me TOTALLY WIPED. And that is when I first did it, doing only one rep of each circuit, and more recently when I was only doing it with two workouts a week but two reps of each circuit. I'm not just physically more capable, but I'm mentally tougher when approaching a workout -- I did not previously consider myself capable of working at the level of intensity I have been for as long as I have been. Doing a run right next to MTC, or attending a Cardio Class at the gym and then doing MTC -- just wouldn't have done it. I think I sold myself short a bit. :)

That isn't to say I WANT to push at this level forever -- It's fun to give myself a challenge every now and again, but I don't think 1.5-2hr workouts 5 days a week is feasible for most people most of the time.

SO! Moving on!

I've registered to run in an 8K in San Diego that will take place the Sunday following the Convention -- I'm SO EXCITED. :)

When I registered it asked for my T-Shirt size and I was like.... should I put small??? I was telling my DH my feelings when making my decision and I was like... I feel like an imposter putting that size down! Like I'm going to arrive and it's going to be like, yeah, no, DANA ISN'T A SIZE SMALL. Go back to your old standard XL. UGH. NO. This is who I am now and if I get larger than a Small Size of a generic Adult T-Shirt it will be baggy and I want it to at least come close to FITTING ya know? My DH was like - I already feel like I'm folding children's clothes. HAHAHAA anyway.

I'm VERY excited for this weekend!!! :D

Tonight -- DDR (DaNCE DANCE REVOLUTION!) Party! :D WOOT! I'm thinking about wearing my HRM....

Tomorrow/Sunday - AIR SHOW! :D There is a big Air Show in town this weekend -- not sure if we'll go on Saturday or Sunday, but the Blue Angels are flying and it's near my work -- so starting yesterday we've been hearing them flying back and forth overhead preparing and it's getting me so jazzed about it. :D I've never been to one!!!! And I grew up near an Army Base that had one at least once every year... so yeah. I want to finally go!

Also on Saturday - RUN 25min.

Sunday - Yoga and Pilates -- My gym buddy and I will not be going to Pilates on Saturday, but to the Sunday class instead. I've been meaning to check out the Yoga classes at my gym and there's one in the same studio right before Pilates so I'm just going to go earlier and go to that as well. I'm very excited for it! :D

That's it for now!!!

Fiber: too much?

I need to research this some more. I've been using that Daily Feedback tool on the Nutrition Tracker and every day it mentions my fiber being high. This week it's been like 69, 51, 48, 55... like that. The blip of information on the Feedback tool says that "50-60g can cause digestive distress and prevent nutrient absorption." There's also another comment that says make sure to get plenty of water to help flush out excess fiber.

I'm not so worried about the digestive distress because I haven't noticed anything, but I WANT MY NUTRIENTS DARNIT. I eat healthy and I want to get the benefits of it and not let them pass through my system unabsorbed. I need to do a little more research about this beyond the little tidbits provided on the Feedback tool, but does anyone know anything more about this off the top of their heads????

LATER! :) (A long one, I know...)

EDITED TO ADD: In answer to the Fiber Question:

"Including fiber in one's daily diet has definite benefits. However, although very uncommon, fiber has the potential to cause harm if taken in excess of 60 or 70 grams daily.

. . . (stuff here about digestive issues). . .

Fiber speeds the movement of foods through the digestive system. Since iron is mainly absorbed early during digestion, high amounts of fiber may limit the opportunity for the absorption of iron, calcium, and other nutrients. Finally, large amounts of fiber can also cause deficiencies of nutrients and energy by causing one to feel full before enough nutrients have been consumed. Children and elderly persons are especially vulnerable to these concerns, since they eat smaller portion sizes."

SO my conclusion is that lately I've largely increased my overall calorie intake, which proportionately raised my fiber intake, so hopefully I'm not suffering from some of what is mentioned due to smaller portions and not eating enough -- but also I only was over 60 on one day, I think, and mostly was around the 50's. So I will stop worrying! :)

What a great weekend you have planned! I did see your next blog about the mountain food- I'm assuming that was at the DDR party. Hopefully you dance danced enough to even it out :)
And thanks for the fiber info- I've wondered that too. Usually I'm right in the 25-35 range, but have an occasional high day, good to know I can also not worry about it.
Have fun at the air show today! Missy

It's really hard to eat clean and NOT get more than the recommended 25-35 grams a day, I think! My stomach is sometimes not happy when I eat 60 grams a day, but I'm not sure if that's because of the fiber or the chemical artificial junk in the gum I sometimes chew way too much of. The thing about fiber blocking nutrient absorption is new to me too...

you are rocking mtc this month. i love how strong it makes you physically and even more importantly mentally. not sure about the fiber stuff. it does cause tummy issues with me if i have too much. i didn't know about the nutrient thing though.

Congratulations! I'm new to this site and to blogging too...but not to kettlebells.
I'm 63 and have been training with them for about two years. My daughter is an RKC and trains a group of us on the beach. What is the calorie burning amount that folks are using for 30 min. of kettlebells? I use both the 20 and 26 lb kettlebells. I've joined the 500 min/mo challenge.
Have a great weekend! Joanie

"I'm not just physically more capable, but I'm mentally tougher when approaching a workout" - you preach it sister! That's how I feel, too. While my body may not be a whole lot stronger - well, actually it is! - my mind is SO much stronger these days. I can talk my self INTO good health easier than ever before.

I love DDR - trying to talk my DH into getting a Wii so we can get DDR, too. Or maybe not a Wii - just any system. And then he can get Guitar Hero. And both big kids will be happy!

Have fun tonight. I'll be thinking of you on Saturday - another run day for me, too, and then Sunday is the long one of the week - 5 miles!

Keep on runnin'!

Today has been a long one.

The weather was supposed to be bad today -- but it waited until after I got to work to start. :D YAY! I got my run in, and it went flawlessly. Well -- ok -- my HR was up a bit too high at the end -- it's all uphill at the end of my run and I was just feeling pumped and wanting to go for it. I have a hard time slowing myself down at times like that. But it all FELT good and that's the important part.

Then MTC Day 11 -- which is a repeat of the Day 8 example I posted. It went really well today, I was feeling good. Felt a lot better at the end than I did on Monday, but granted it was in the morning and after a 25min run instead of after an hour long dance class. ;)

I weighed back at my normal maintenance weight again today. I can't believe I'm eating so much food and maintaining or possibly SLIGHTLY losing. I have to admit I feel slightly gluttonous and I wonder if I just need to eat some more nutrient dense foods again? But I'm hitting the PB and nuts and full fat versions of things I think... and avoiding junk. It'll be interesting to see how my calorie burn goes after I'm done with MTC. I'll be running more -- 5 runs per week by mid May -- but less of other things. We'll see!

Um, I guess not much else. I'm still counting down the days till the convention. :) It's on my mind most of the time. HAHAHA. I'm just so excited!

I know the feeling about eating so much after going so long with eating seemingly so little. Watch out for having to eat all your calories at once when you get behind. I do that more often than I would like to admit, tonight being one of them and I feel like a piņata. Great run and great goals! If you get a chance look at my intro on my sparkpage, I rewrote it so let me know what you think. Looking forward to meeting you in a month!

Sounds like a wonderful day to me! Glad you felt good after your run and workout - it's amazing how much better I (we) feel after a tough workout when not so long ago I (we) we pooped after barely any effort.

What will you be doing/saying/talking about on the speaker's panel at the convention? Do you have a friend or someone going with you? Sounds like sooooo much fun! And a great way to mark your accomlishments.

My poor little hamstrings are dying. HAHAHA They are so sore and tight!

This morning I did a very short stint (10min) on the ArcTrainer and (9min?) on the rowing machine to kinda get my muscles warm, and then I did a "Hip Opening" Yoga Flow from YogaDownload.com podcast.

That link takes you to some free downloads, but I don't think the one I did is on that list. You can probably find it on iTunes. I think it said class 22b? Or something like that? It's a video podcast with slideshow style images of the poses, and the instructor guides you through everything verbally and there is some music in the background as well.

RIGHT after the yoga -- I felt FANTASTIC. And now I feel sore and tight again. WAH!!! I think I will take one or two stretching breaks today at work. Tomorrow is another run and I do not want to be tight through my hamstrings and hips for it. Will also give myself additional time tomorrow to warm up and stretch BEFORE my run instead of 3-5 minutes into it like on Tuesday. hahaha.

It's SO GORGEOUS out today. I REALLY hope that it continues for tomorrow so I can have a beautiful outdoor run. :)

I ate so much food this morning. But I planned out my entire day and it will be within ranges. Sooooooooo woohoo for having higher ranges. hahaha.

Hope you were able to get your run in today. I have been feeling under the weather a little this week, but not so bad that I couldn't workout. :) I just won't be able to hit my calories burned that I was aiming for, for the week. I am not even at 1000 for the week (980.7 as of today). But I am hoping to get in a run tomorrow if it doesn't rain tomorrow.

I saw your comment about the new reebox shoes. How much were they?

You are the only other person I have ever seen on here that uses the ArcTrainer! Why am I so excited about that? Yep I'm a SparkGeek or something. I use the Arctrainer instead of using a bike, I know they really are nothing alike but I do. I put that thing at max stride and 50-60% resistance and just go for 70 to 80 minutes. And I wonder why I lose 7 to 12 pounds every time I workout, yeah I'm out there! emoticon

I have been finding that I need to stretch a LOT more than I realized. I'm sure a lot of it is age (nothing you have to worry about yet!)

Tomorrow is a run day for me, too. I have to do it before work, so it will be in the dark. (There, now that you know I am planning on it, I can't wimp out tomorrow!)

Sometimes when we work out muscles or stretch them differently, they hurt the next day. Gentle stretching and massage really helps - or warm bath might help.

Today's run was a chore. It was raining outside so I attempted my 30min run indoors. With a stretching break and potty break during that time, I only managed to cover about 2.06 miles in that time. I just was SO NOT INTO IT. :P I almost just called it at 1mile, but I said to myself, how am I going to run a marathon if I wuss out on a 30 min run?? Even if it is indoors and crappy and my hamstrings are feeling ridiculous? So I'm proud I stuck with it. No I was not running a 15min mile, due to the breaks, but still -- I intended todays run to be a lovely 5K route around campus. :P oh well.

Then MTC -- I really enjoyed some of the exercises I had to do today, so that wasn't so bad. Still totally wiped at the end. I didn't drink enough water this morning before getting going so until right about now I haven't felt quite... normal. I just got back from a snack break and fueled up w/ the last of my Homemade Granola mixed with some Blueberry Pomegranite Probiotic yogurt from Target, and an apple. Woot.

Also -- regarding yesterday's workout -- plank ups, close grip/scorpion pushups were all done from the knees. I can do a regular pushup from the toes -- but my right shoulder/wrist have been bugging me everytime I do those types of moves lately, and even if it weren't -- close grip pushups are the devil. I actually saw some dude CRANKING them out last night at the gym while I was doing hanging abs. I was like wow... that is amazing. HAHAHAA.

That said, I'm over 2300 calories again at this point and I'm looking forward to a more relaxed trip to the gym tomorrow.

I've entered in today including all snacks and a potential dinner plan into my tracker in case anyone is interested -- I might change dinner up a bit since it's a bit meat/fat heavy... hahaha :D I also diligently tracked everything yesterday. YAY. Gotta keep on this 100% tracking streak -- I really need to make sure my calories are coming from good places and being pretty balanced.

Plank rows on a more beautiful and energetic day in the past, 12lb dumbbells. :)

P.S. -- ALMOST FORGOT TO MENTION -- Let's Dance was AWESOME last night. Regular teacher girl was BACK. We danced to Beyonce's Radio and got some definite booty shaking in. She's such a better instructor in general, and the choreography realllllly fit the music.
