So my DH decided I was going to be his snooze this morning. I kept going to check on him and see if he was getting up and he was like, 5 more minutes, 10 more minutes, 15 more minutes, no I'm gonna get up at 10:30. :P ahhahah :D

I woke up WAY too early after sleeping horribly.

The landscapers at our apartment complex apparently decided that 8-8:30 AM was a great time to start chainsawing down the extra overhanging limbs of all the trees around our apartment. FUN!!!!!!!!! So there was sawing and cutting smaller and leaf blowing all going on. No way I could continue to sleep.

So I get up, make lunches, decide not to disturb DH, but he usually gets up around 9:30 so I check on him and then the human snooze button goes into effect. So I'm eating breakfast, watching TiVo, and running into the bedroom every so often.

I am NOT feeling my run.

But, after DH leaves for work I start watching Biggest Loser Australia and this guy who weighs like 180-something kilograms (396lbs for 180k, so definitely over 400lbs) is performing a challenge where he has to relay run up and down this massive hill carrying a 5kilo (11lb) weight! All the members of his team (and the other team actually) were commenting on how inspirational he is and how if he can carry on, how can they give up?

OH dear me and my getting up off my butt after watching the biggest loser, but I knew that for me today was supposed to be an easy run and although I only had one off day since my long run, I really had no excuse to sit around and be lazy especially seeing this man work so hard. SOOOOOO I went for my run.

emoticon Being honest, it did still kinda suck. But I got it done. :) 2.6 miles, completed at about 4.17MPH average. My HR average was 159, a bit higher than I would have liked, but I was getting impatient with my run today. It was hot and sunny out, and I just wanted to get done faster than going so slow allowed -- all that considered, I think I reigned myself in pretty well. There was at least a nice breeze for most of it. 442 calories burned.

emoticon Last night I tried something new. I buy storemade tomato sauce to make pasta with, and we usually use half a jar at a time. That can seem like enough sauce when there's no meat, but with meat in the sauce it kinds soaks up all the sauce, or at least adds more surface area for the sauce to cover, and then it's all sauce meager. Which is really not too troublesome for me, but the DH is not a fan. I had a can of crushed tomatoes w/ mushrooms and green peppers in them. The sauce was mushroom and olive! :D So I added the can, a bit of Mrs. Dash Tomato Basil and Garlic seasoning and it tasted really good. :D Good texture, good flavor -- I don't think DH would have known I did anything different if I hadn't told him. I think that might help me stretch some sauce in the future for less.

I'm thinking fajitas again tonight... I don't have a really good plan this week. I have a bunch of chicken breasts in individual bags in the freezer that I can take down to defrost throughout the week, I'm gonna cook some rice for the week tonight I think, and then I have some microwave steam in a bag veggies -- the asparagus again, and a squash/zucchini mix. :D I'm excited about those.

SORRY! STILL NO QUILT PICTURES!!! No excuse but laziness. If all else fails I will be able to take pictures Thursday because I'm taking the day off of work for a Lady Dr. Visit and going to dinner with family at night. :)

    I vote that all calories burned by doing exercise we MADE ourselves do even we didn't want to ... should be automatically DOUBLED.

    Hey Dana, I love ur blogs. That's so cute human snooze button. Sometimes we need our rest, so I can relate how ur hubby is feeling!! Is he feeling better or not 100% yet??

You did awesome with that run, even though u didn't feel like it!!! I feel like that sometimes but we just got to get it done, u know??

About dinner I feel the same way. I buy my chicken breast from Costco which comes with 2 breasts in individual packets. I took down some this morning since my boyfriend injured his hand. Also I just got this new pasta from Fiber Gourmet. It's low cal, high fiber (18-20g a serving) and taste the same. I got it from the daily spark a while ago. It's a lil expensive for pasta, but since ur our cooking queen I will let u know how it taste!!

    lol I feel the snooze button thing! I must hit it at least 5 times per day, I hot it so much that I have the alarm go off earlier to compensate for it! glad to see ya ran even though you didn't want to , I am starting to hit that point as well, I exercise even though i don't want to a lot of times and feel better that I did every time! good job on the keep on keepin on.

    I am the worst snoozer ever.... ALWAYS hit the button 2-3 times before I get up... I had some motivation to do early morning workouts before going to work that I try to spark up from time to time, but so far only made it ONCE in the past couple weeks... sigh, really a night owl.... just coming back from late night tennis with hubby from 9-10 pm.....

    I like to add black beans to meat sauce for spaghetti. My brother introduced me to it and at first I was like?!?!? But it actually tastes really good! I guess I add black beans to a lot of things. Ha!

    Hee..hee...what Briegh said. Remember to embrace the suck! That's funny about your dinner because I made pasta with marinara sauce and ground turkey...so I JUST experienced the meat sucking up more of the sauce. loL!

Frozen chicken breasts...I'll throw them in the crockpot with a little bit of water and some seasoning. Then for dinner, I shred the chicken and we add a specialty BBQ sauce. The girls adore it and it's really good, even though so simple. I serve it with a Kashi brown rice pilaf and a green veggie.

When you cook your rice for the week...have you ever added other grains? The Kashi pilaf is so good but spendy. I'd like to make my own.

    Good job getting out there! I always use a can of crushed tomatoes with garlic and some dashes of other seasonings instead of spaghetti sauce. I think I can really taste so much more flavor that way, and then I can count the tomatoes as a vegetable.

Tough Weekend...

So this weekend was a bit of a struggle for me -- mostly Saturday I guess. Things got done, but it was tough being mostly by myself all day long in the house wanting to munch munch munch all day. :P I DID stay within calories, though, and didn't eat anything horrendously bad. Yesterday was much better.

I credit my run yesterday to making yesterday so much better. I also cooked a healthy dinner! :D Tofu+Broccoli stuff.

emoticon SO! I putzed around all morning yesterday and then at like 1:30 I was like. I have to go run. And I went. I waited for my DH to wake up because I wanted to make sure he wouldn't wake up and need me, so I could make sure he was set before I left. So that is really the main reason for delay. I took a new path, kind of just running here and there until I felt I had run long enough to go back and be between 5-6 miles total -- and I hit 5.25 miles exactly, so WOOHOO!!! It was a TOUGH kind of a run -- up and down and up and down and up and down. Super hilly. But I completed it in 1hr and 18min, so I was a little over 4MPH, or a bit over 14min miles I think. The weather was kind of threatening rain the whole time, but it was gorgeous in that stormy looking kind of way. Breezy and overcast. :) My FAVORITE kind of weather. Burned like... 971 calories or something? I can't remember, it's on my mapmyrun. Average Heart Rate was 161 I think. I was trying at the beginning to keep it down, but with the hills and unknown territories, and at one point just getting excited about a song that came on... I let myself get carried away sometimes. Plus a sprint to the finish, of course. :) hehehe. Feeling very confident about the Virtual Bunny 10K on Nov 1st. :D (Me and the Bun Buddy Brigade are running a 10K distance in our areas on or around 11/1 and will share our times with each other and whatnot. Fun, right?)

emoticon So DH had all kinds of fabulous food requests on Saturday because he was sick. Apparently for him being sick = wanting to eat total crap. Specific Requests: Cake donuts, Kettle Cooked Mesquite BBQ Chips, Spicy Meaty Rotel Dip, and Ginger Ale. (I think that's everything....) OH and orange juice. :) Of course. hahahaha. so I had a very interesting shopping cart full of beautiful produce, sugar free puddings, light ice cream, and crap. HAHAHAHA I made the Spicy Rotel Dip with Extra Lean Ground Turkey and 2% Milk Velveeta. :) It came out to 125 calories for 1/3 of a cup -- which is NOT TOO SHABBY actually. I had some. Oh yes, with the tortilla chips I also had to buy for the purpose. The difference is, I had 1/3 of a cup, then went back for a 2nd 1/3. I ate that 2nd 1/3 mostly with celery. So I did it in good moderation. YAY! I ate HALF of a cake donut yesterday. And really the reason I stopped? I wanted to make sure DH got to have some of the flavor. And when I stopped, it was enough. So craving satisfied, disaster averted. :)

Last night I made the tofu and broccoli dish which was DELICIOUS. My DH, who "hates broccoli", loved it, wanted more, and said that's the best tasting broccoli I've ever had! :D

SO! Here's what it entailed: ( From the Biggest Loser Cookbook)

1 package of Extra Firm Tofu, drained and cut into 1/2" cubes (or something like that. You slice the brick of tofu into slabs about 1/2" thick, place in between paper towels with a plate on top and underneath and something to weight the upper plate on top. Let sit for 30min, then cut into the smaller cubes)
broccoli... I don't remember how much really. I got two bunches.
some chopped up green onions
a couple tsp of minced garlic...
1 tsp of fresh minced ginger
1/2 tsp olive oil
1/4 tsp sesame oil
2 tbsp light teriyaki sauce
red pepper flakes (if you want the added spice)

So you start out with a hot skillet/wok, add cooking spray, and add the tofu, green onions, garlic, ginger, olive oil and sesame oil. Cook for about 3 minutes. Then add the chopped up broccoli and continue to cook until the tofu is browned on all sides. Add the teriyaki sauce and pepper flakes if you want to.

I kinda varied from this... I cooked the tofu probably a lot longer before adding the broccoli, added the olive oil and sesame oil at the same time I added the broccoli, and didn't cook that quite as long, but until they were starting to get a bit tender. Added the teriyaki sauce and pepper flakes and cooked a bit longer till everything was well covered. And that's about it. Anyway.

That much made 2 servings. Delicious.

emoticonSo..... I FINISHED MY QUILT!!! :D Unless I want to go through and actually quilt on it or something, but it's all put together. :D I didn't get a chance to take pictures, but it looks pretty awesome. Maybe I can do that tomorrow morning sometime.

My DH seems to be feeling somewhat better. He was so pitiful and pathetic all weekend! :( Sounded horrible, coughing, periodically running a fever... yeah. Poor thing. But his throat wasn't really sore, so we knew it wasn't strep. So we didn't end up going to the Dr's, but he was not in good shape. Last night he started to sound a little better, though, and I think he got good sleep last night, too. At least BETTER. I'm just crossing my fingers that I don't get struck with the crud, too.

    Dana, you're a saint. My first hubby was such a pain in the butt when he was sick, so maybe I'll feel differently when my honey gets sicko. So if and when he does, I want to be like you!

Cooking with tofu scares me. I should do it to get over that fear. ;o)

    Your the bionic woman, you can't get sick! I like to pop Vitamin C and Echeanacia (spelling?) when I am around sickos! Glad he's getting better, sorry about his food choices though! Oh, the torture! Yum, Velveeta! Can't wait to see your T-shirt quilt! When do you find time to do this sort of thing?! I have crappy time management skills! Yea on the run too!

    Soooo funny about your dh being sick = wanting/eating crap. I've had that happen too. I think maybe it's really that the body is craving a specific thing, like salt for example. Good for you for trying to make his dip a teensy bit healthier :-)

FAJITAS ROCK!

emoticonYeah, that recipe was awesome.

The fajitas included:

Onion (of course), red bell pepper, one anaheim pepper, one jalapeno pepper, one cup of sliced baby portobellos, and one chicken breast w/ Mrs. Dash Chipotle Seasoning. :D Cooked in olive oil, 2 Tbsp, served with Xtreme Fiber Tortillas! (72 cal per tortilla - woot) and for ME one serving of fat free sour cream.

AWESOME.

Will definitely get those in the rotation.

emoticon um... I thought there was a sick icon but this will do. DH IS SICK!! I bought a thermometer this morning and he is running a low fever. :( Poor baby. I am going home early from work to care for him/possibly take him to the Dr's. We're concerned he might have strep since his throat was bothering him when he woke up!!! Hopefully maybe it was just dry and will feel better by the time I go back home, but we'll see.

Today's an off day from workouts so nothing much else to report.

    My wife LOVES fajitas, so i think I will try this out, its not something I have ever thought to make (because I don't especially enjoy fajitas) but hey! I marinate my chicken strips in chipotle marinade instead of using the seasoning ... and GREAT idea on the jalapeno peppers! Didn't think of that. Yum. I don't even need the tortilla.

But it sounds like you might be doing chicken noodle soup soon. Good of you to be nurse. Have a great weekend!

    snap those fajitas sound good. my boyfriend is sick too, so i get to go straight home from work and take care of him. his throat was bothering him too. i hope he is not really sick because he rarely gets sick and he don't like staying home from work. once ur sick at his job, u have to get cleared to come back to work. that's a big hassle. so i hope ur hubby feels better!!

Slug slug slug

I'm a slug.

Or at least that's how I feel today.

Last night... we went over to a friends house to play games after I got off of work. And yes, I do get off at 10PM and don't have to be at work till 1PM... but that doesn't mean that going home at 4AM and to bed at 5AM is ok!!!! EEK!!!

My eating was kind of horrible. I did my best to track what I ate last night, because I really wanted to see if I was horribly over or not, and it turns out that I was probably still within range. If not, only slightly over. WOOHOO! :)

But WHAT I ate...

two slices of fried eggplant (breadcrumbs, panfried)
one biscuit
one Swiss Miss Triple Chocolate Dream Pudding
a couple pinches of broken sunchips (I'm guessing .5 serving)
one Breyer's Triple Chocolate Twix Ice Cream Cone
two Dove Dark Chocolates
Naturally More PB and Animal Crackers.

Now you may all point and laugh. Yes, I ate about half chocolate/sugar food groups, and the other half random random random crap. At least I'm probably not over in calories, which is awesome.

SO! Fast forward to this morning. I wake up at about 11AM. I am soooooo sore from doing five trillion lunges during yesterday's MTC workout, and tired... so I decide to skip working out today and watch my TiVo'd shows instead. So I get myself some PB and Animal Crackers to start the day out right *haha* and settle down in front of the TV.

I start watching Biggest Loser.

Annnnd when they get through their Last Chance Workout... I am like Dana. Get up and run. So I did.

WOOHOO!!!! I'm ridiculously sore in the general BUTT region, but I got my run in.

emoticon23 min, 2.04miles (I think), 319 calories. Average HR 176 (about 90%), which is where I wanted to be for today's Speed Work. It was just another tempo run because I was so short on time with procrastinating I didn't want to try anything else. I could have just run for time... maybe next time.

emoticonThank you to everyone for all the lovely comments and compliments -- my head is going to overbalance my long balance challenged body if you keep it up. (And that sounds fun, so don't stop - HAHAHAA ;) hehe)

Actually -- speaking of balance challenged... well... I'm really kind of clumsy. Last night I was walking across the living room and not really looking where I was going, but come on, how often do you walk across the same room??? I plowed my left shin, a couple inches below the knee, DIRECTLY into the coffee table. I wasn't even really close to the corner. I was full speed walking right into the table. *sigh*

emoticon I'm thinking tonight will be chicken fajitas. I've never made fajitas before! :) So I'm kinda excited. Today's food has been pretty ok. So yay to that.

To sum up.

Stayed up too late, ate crap, didn't totally blow it, didn't get enough sleep, ran anyway, feel sore and tired now, but accomplished and generally content. :)

    The really scary thing is that I started to get a dreamy, glazed over, Homer Simpson-esque look in my eyes when I read what you'd consumed!

Look, who you are physically, and who you are mentally are going to take time to synch. You were a Fattie. And you had poor, slugg-y lifestyle habits. Now you are a Hottie. And you have wonderful life habits. One of those habits is that you allow occassional indulgences. Check. Another is that you don't beat yourself up about it. Umm. Ok. Check.     Congrats on the run! I think I feel best about exercise when I do it unintentionally...like I didn't plan it and then surprised myself by actually working out anyway. When that happens I begin to really believe my mindset is changing!

YEAH. That's right, I finally recorded myself with some talking and trombone playing. I'm all nasty cause I just finished working out before practicing, but at least you can kinda hear me and whatnot. Enjoy!

The picture is what I'm wearing today, although I purposefully pulled the bagginess of the shirt closer because I really just wanted to see where my body is now. I think I have one other side shot in my gallery unless I deleted it... and it's a big difference!

emoticon Those are swing kicks from Day 30 of MTC. Today was my first ever AT HOME Making the Cut workout. I just did NOT feel like going to the gym, so rather than not workout, I did it at home. I did the Standing Lat Pull Downs and Seated Cable Rows with Resistance Bands (so glad I finally got those), subbed Good Mornings for Back Extensions, but everything else was as written. The excercises were either body weight based or if they were with dumbbells they were ones I'd do with probably 5lb weights at the gym anyway, so I was good. OH except for the Concentration Curls. Those needed a heavier weight. I did the first rep of the circuit with the 5ers, but then I used my 10lb kettlebell for the second rep of the circuit. :) MUCH BETTER.

I also did about 30 KB swings, not much, but it was something!!!

Then I played trombone for a little while with the HRM still on. Then stopped and played a bit more with it on, then without. Made those videos...

YEAH!

emoticon MIXED BEAN MINESTRONE STEW! That's the name of the recipe I made last night. People, I chopped onions, celery, sliced carrots, cubed a potato and a squash -- I was a regular super cooking machine. The only "non scratch" type items I used was canned diced tomatoes, canned beans instead of dried beans, and veggie broth powder instead of homemade vegetable stock. As far as I'm concerned, that is a FROM SCRATCH SOUP! OK and I didn't make the pasta, that came from a box. :P But who makes fresh pasta? Almost no one, thanks. It was delicious but made a TONNNNNNNNNN. The cookbook says it makes 24 cups and six servings, so that means one serving is 4 cups! 2 cups is PLENTY, thank you very much. I added one whole serving to my tracker for lunch by mistake, but I also need to add the peas. (OH yes, frozen peas) to the recipe as well, but that won't add many calories. I will be eating this stuff forever. :)

emoticon Work has been crazy busy today. I came in, prepped for a meeting that started about 50 min after I got here, was ready to walk into the meeting 5 min before it started, the meeting lasted the FULL 2 hours scheduled for it, then I had an hour to get other things done and in order before lunch. Now I'm back from lunch and getting my SparkPeople stuff in order.... then more work stuff to do. :P hahaha :D It's good to be busy, though, it makes the day go by faster.

emoticonUmm, I guess this will work.. :) Adding more pictures to my gallery since I finally put them on my computer today, including ones from "the day I felt cute" as I'm calling it -- with the legwarmers. A little unusual, but I'm a fan. :P

I think that's it....

OH!!! I burned a total of 500 calories from my MTC/KBswinging/Tromboneplaying session, 54 minutes.

    The stew sounds awesome miss fabulously SKINNY in the mirror! I've been having homemade chili for the last two week, everyday for lunch. Might be time to try something different. Looking forward to checking out the trombone playing ...and the legwarmers too! Yay on adapting your MTC workout to your "home gym." You're rockin' it!

    Ok, I commented your page BUT that pic, you look maaaaavolous! really! and the vids ;) , the soup sounds great and I make something similar but I use chicken stock, I make either chicken stock or soup every time we have a whole chicken for dinner so there is always stock in the freezer ;) .

hmmmmm I have been deficit tracking should I be logging guitar playing time?? I have to play that thing 1-2 hours daily on and off all day every day! :)

    I loved seeing you in the videos, Dana. Very cool to see you moving and hear your voice. Great trombone playing!

It's nice to hear that MTC doesn't necessarily have to be done in the gym. I'm holding out on getting that book until I get a little closer to my goal weight and don't belong to a gym either.

Your new pictures look great, too. That's amazing about how much you had to cut out of that top to alter it. You're quite an inspiration.

Oh, and how much would it cost me to hire you as my personal chef. LOL

    Wow, I didn't know you are into music playing.... nice!! I would love to play in a band or group of musicians, too.. but hardly have time to keep up with my piano skills just for myself.... My biggest recent achievement was playing one of Brahm's Hungarian Dances with my husband on a joint piano session for a Fundraiser... so much fun and we plan to do it again next year! Cheers to you, don't know where you take all the time to do all these things and write super detailed blogs almost every day...

    OMG, Dana! I love the trombone playing! Thanks for letting me hear your voice, too! I just think the trombone is one of the most soulful sounds you can hear. It just resounds with feelings of the deep south and days gone by. Too cool! Beautiful music!

You look very pretty in that top above - as always, of course.

I did not feel like working out last night at all. I did however do some body weight strength training exercises plus some jumping jacks during the Biggest Loser, so I guess that counts for something, right? I am SO doing some dvd cardio tonight, though. I saw a kettleball on youtube once... it seems like a unique tool. Maybe adds some more fun to the workouts, huh?

I totally read your beginning recipe wrong. The first couple of times I read it, I thought "people" was an ingredient. I kept going back and saying "HUH?!" LOL! I thought it said "People, chopped onions, celery..." Since when did you become a cannibal? Sorry, I am a little silly tonight! Other than the peas (and people - haha) - it sounds like a delish recipe! Yummy!

Being busy at work is nice, I agree. Some schools I work at, it seems like I just got there, and the kids are being dismissed already. I'd much rather have it that way than to be dragging through the day wondering if it's over yet!

Oh, and about those legwarmers... as long as they're not Rainbow Brite ones, I think you're safe! haha
