GA State Games Run for Life 10K - KILLED IT!

Sunday, July 31, 2011

My McMillan prediction time based on a 32min 5K was 1:06:28 - a 10:41 pace...

I finished in about 1:08 (probably just under - gun time will be around 1:08:05, but it wasn't chip timed - it took at least 5 seconds for me to cross the start, though) - Garmin avg pace with the small added distance and including a walking bit at the end because I forgot to STOP my garmin - 10:48!!!!!

WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

The course was rolling two loop course - middle mile was mostly uphill - here are my splits:

10:55 (uphill)
11:12 (uphill again - and how it's getting really HOT and no shade really this mile!)
10:33 (WOOHOO!)
...? (Garmin has 11:45 but that's with the walking, I was down at a 9:30-10 and then final sprint down to a 7:55 pace for a split second!)

My sister and I before the race - it was her first 10K too AND longest distance run EVER!!!!

She did GREAT for never having run this distance before especially - I had an A B and C goal for myself - A - 1:06:38 B - sub 1:12, C - sub 1:15 - She met my C goal! :D That is awesome!!!! AND she started out too fast - but she checked herself early on. I saw her ahead of me for most of the first loop and caught up to her right before the mostly downhill section - we ran together for a lot of that mile, until the terrain kind of evened out and she let me go. That takes a lot of strength! I find it really hard to run my own race without getting caught up trying to keep up with people when I should just be doing my personal best. There was a little out and back portion right before the finishing turn, and I saw her when I was getting close to the finishing turn on the way out so we got to give each other a good cheer! :D

YAY SISSIMO!!! I finished, grabbed my finisher bag of shirt and coupons and ran back to where my hubby was waiting with vuvuzela and camera. He played the vuvuzela and I took some pictures.

Here's the one picture he got of me finishing:

See me?? No?? That's because I'm DIRECTLY behind the guy in blue. If you look between his legs you can see a splash of neon yellow from my leg sleeves. HAHA.

Here's my sister:

Ok so I'm not the best race photographer ever, but she was rockin into the finish! :D

Here we are post race:

And I met up with a fellow Team Marathon Bar member, Tricia!

She was so sweet and it was GREAT to meet her! :D

Anyway, I had a great weekend overall, although later that day I had an awful splitting headache and kind of whimpered myself to sleep with a bag of peas on my head care of my sweet sister - I think it was a combination of a delayed reaction from the heat and little sleep the night before. Aside from that, it was so fun. :)

Some things went alright.

HAHAHA. Having the challenge definitely spurred me ahead in some aspects, and I know what I need to work on next month.

To work on next month:

These are really the two main things I'm disappointed in my performance over for this past month. Other things definitely improved, even if not perfect - but those things still fell by the wayside.

Now for the big physical goal results:

Goal - lose 4 lbs. Starting Weight: 186.5 Ending Weight: 181.5

Not only that, but my average weight at Physics Diet has crept down to 182.63, so ALMOST down to 4lbs lower than the starting weight, and that is with a backlog of higher weights into account that needed to get averaged down.

Here is my final weight chart for July:

I'm doing this all now because I won't be able to weighin at my home scale again until 8/1 since I'll be gone this weekend to race with my sister.

Also for the record - work internet is being watched like a hawk right now, hence my absence. But I'm still here! Hooping and running! :D

11 Miler DONE - Questionable nutrition

Sunday, July 24, 2011

So I saved us some money this week by not going grocery shopping, but at the same time - my nutrition was definitely questionable at times.

I'm not going to go into details to spread the gory unhealthy food into the sparkisphere, but I'd say my splurge meal total was more like 2 - .5 splurge on one day, 1 on another and .5 on another. HAHAHA.

Anyway - I also haven't weighed in a couple days, about to go do that right now - I'm sure it's horrifying because yesterday was splurgey and it's later in the day - I've eaten and gu'd and hydrated and all that. (I ran 11 but I also refueled and rehydrated a lot so who knows what it'll say).

I do have some cute pictures to share from my Marathon Bars samplings I did this weekend in relation to the Paint the Streets 5K - I did one at the packet pickup for the race, so it was inside of our Fleet Feet - WOOT! Love that place. I wish I could live there. Volunteered for the packet pickup from around 3-7 and then the next morning volunteered at the race in the food area from 6-9:30ish mostly manning my samples but also cut up a BUTTLOAD of bananas and did a few other things to help out.

Saw NOELLIEMAE - she ran and placed in her AG! So awesome! :) She hung out with me for a good while, which was awesome - because I was pretty bored before the race got started. HAHA. So not only was I "not bored" but I had good conversation. YAY! Also I met another of the leaders for the Huntsville Official Spark Team - HILLIS. two of his kids also won AG awards!!!! :D SO COOL!!!

That's me and the race director after Packet Pickup was OVER!

My awesome Marathon Bar Samples the next day:

And the picture Noel took of me manning the table:

I wish I had gotten a picture of her on the winners podium but I was being distracted at the time with volunteer stuff - but I cheered!!!

Well - to be honest, I haven't showered yet since my run this morning and that's 2+ hours ago now so I need to get moving!!! HAHA :D

P.S. - weighed at 182 - not the lowest I've seen, but the low point for this past week was 181.5 and 182's so I'm good with this - wanna keep it here or lower to meet my 4lb lost goal for July! (Starting at 186.5)

Check out July's weight chart - you can see all the bumps up but the average is coming down down down! :)

    You're awesome. emoticon

I always love your blog pics! I've never ever run an event race, except for when I ran track in jr. high and high school. I wonder if someone who has had spine surgery and a degenerative disc "condition" can slowly work back up to being able to run? I'm so scared now that my spine is going to self-destruct with the slightest movement.....!! I have my 2 week post op appt. tomorrow. The surgeon dude is an active athlete (he's orthopedic) so I know he'll relate when I lament to him that I'm afraid I'll never do anything beyond geriatric exercise again. We shall see. For now, your blogs are cathartic!

Oh, and if those are the SNICKER marathon bars.... I bought them once hesitatingly, because of the "SNICKERS" moniker, but was impressed with the nutrition info and the taste. The protein/carbs ratio wasn't bad, and the taste was better than most energy/protein bars. My go-to bar now are the ZONE perfect bars, but your blog encourages me to revisit the marathon bars!

Graph is looking good!!

The pics of the bars made me so hungry. They're really, really good and I hope they sell them here on the PX on post, LOL. After taking that sample a few weeks ago, I'm hooked!

Nice job on the run, too. As for questionable nutrition, man, I'm so there as well. I can't believe that I consider today's lunch (a Whopper w/cheese & fries) as OK because it was at least somewhat protein-packed. *sigh*

Is that a little workout skirt? Cute!

I'm sure you don't need me to say this, but if your weight is indeed horrifying, you can be assured that it's not FAT gain and a huge majority of it will go away fast.

My nutrition this weekend has been worse than "questionable" - it's been downright splurge-rific! Oh well, happens sometimes.

Dana, you are looking GREAT, esp. with those gloves on, LOL! At packet pickup in Seattle, they had a marathon bar sampling area set up and those bars are GOOD!!! Too good to have in the house, unfortunately!

Don't sweat the splurges... sometimes the body needs that to get a little shake up. gotta keep it on it's toes. All good food all the time and the bod gets complacent!

Great job on your 11 miler!

Before to After to Maintenance Picture!

Maybe I could find a better current picture, but I like it.

SMURFETTE made one of these for herself and I liked it so much I had to have one, too!

It reminds me what success I've had in maintaining for the past few years and I may have to fight the regain, but I will keep fighting, and running, and working at it - because I LOVE my new healthy and fit lifestyle!!! :)

Riding the waves!

Monday, July 18, 2011

No, not surving - the waves of the scale! :) Hahaha.

That's what daily weighing gets you - you learn to just deal w/ up fluctuations and appreciate trends. I used to do this when I was losing, most of the time, and I got away from it as I was maintaining (which I think is fine - just weighin every now and again while successfully maintaining to check in worked for me) but then after some time splurging and emotionally eating and not weighing - that's when I gained.

I have never gone out of a healthy weight since I was on the weigh down with SparkPeople because I still checked in enough to make sure that never happened.

After a particularly indulgent Christmas, following a dissapointing marathon (successfully finished, but with an injury and not with the finish time I expected) - and not much exercise because of that injury either - I checked in on 1/25/2011 on physicsdiet.com for the first time at 189.5 at the beginning of February I was only down to 188 and at the beginning of March, 187. My last weigh-in in March was at 185 and my average weight at that time was 186.

Since starting logging my weight again there 7/6, I've weighed in almost as many times as I did the whole first part of the year! I started at 186.5, had a low weigh-in of 180.5 (Previous low for first part of the year was 184.5), and my average has come down to 184.

Today's weighin was actually 182 - I'm hopeful to see more and more lows, but it's taken a lot of lower weighins this July to bring the average down after those first weigh-ins of the year, and I know the average might truly be better since there are a lot of daily weights missing between then and now and the report doesn't take that into account, but I like it. It's keeping me looking at the trend. I've gone from Avg BMI of 24.33 to 23.63 - All healthy weight range, but I want to be a little lighter for running and a bit more comfortable in my clothes.

So to sum up - things are going well.

My weekend was NOT 100% on track, still working on that whole thing, BUT - I had all of this in mind and I ate better than I might have otherwise, and it wasn't totally off base or anything. I did fairly well.

The "Food Tent" at the game was a couple of tables set up w/ pasta, salad, and a little slice of garlic bread from a local pizza place and drinks. We got water and one plate of a little of everything and that was it! Not at all what I was expecting, but I think it came out in my favor! :) We did get some concessions candy - peanut M&M's and sour straws - but I got them for my DH and not for me, so I had 1 straw and 2 M&M's I think...

But then I did have some of my sister in law's birthday cake, and then some more on Sunday and then ENOUGH even though there was a lot more cake leftover and someone tried to offer me more last night. Other than cake I ate really well, very healthy and light.

So all in all, I give myself a thumbs up.

OH! and also I ran 10.47 miles on Saturday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First double digit run since the marathon, first of this year! YAY!

I have another 10 on the schedule for next weekend, weekend after that is my 10K race.

After that my LR progression is - 10, 12, 13, 8 - TUPELO 14.2!

Then another 10K!

Then it's 13, 10, 14, 12, 14, 15, 12, 10 - SOLDIER HALF!

8, 12, 10 - Latin Music Miami Beach Half!

So these are my thoughts on the races based on the time I ahve to train for each -

Tupelo - make it through, run how I feel, cover the distance - automatic PR because the distance is funky. HAHA.

10K - make it through after a recovery week post Tupelo.

Soldier Half - PR? :D

Latin Music Miami Beach Half - take it all in stride and enjoy the music!!!

In those weeks before the Soldier Half there will also be a 5K for charity that I did last year (if we're still in town) that my MIL plans to do this year walking (sO PROUD OF HER - she's lost 130lbs using Medifast and hit her goal weight this past weekend so she is transitioning into maintenance!) so I would really like to do the race "with" her - she doesn't expect me to literally walk with her but I do want to be at the start and see her at the finish! :)

Please help pray (if you pray - or send positivity or however) for my DH to find a job. We are really hoping for a job local as it will make a much smoother transition and allow me to keep my job, but really - we will go anywhere.

I guess the reason you are running the Soldier Half is because you are totally a soldier. *smiles* Yes, you have remained resilient in your efforts and kept a positive attitude. You know I wish you the best in every endeavor.

Congrats on the double digit run! I know that felt great! I can't wait to see you in Tupelo. It being 14.2 miles is strange isn't it? Like you said, it is an automatic PR!

Your MIL is KILLING IT! Woohoo is all I can say about that! I hope your DH finds a job and a local one at that. Keep hanging in there!

I like your idea of using an average weight... allows a little bit for fluctuations and is an easy way to watch trends...

Dana, you are doing great with maintenance! Staying on top of the fluctuations without letting them drive you crazy is a good plan.

And a big WTG for your MIL! That is great news!

I was thinking that the Tupelo race was an odd distance... is there some significance to that? But hooray for an automatic PR, hehe!

Fingers crossed for your hubby's job....

YAY on your double digit run!!! You did an awesome job and I can't wait to see what you have planned in the future!!! What excitement!! I'm used to the scale fluctuations as well - that's just the downfall of weighing yourself regularly, but I'm glad to see that you don't stress out about it. You're in a healthy weight range and doing a great job! You'll see that downward progress in no time! I was *good* nutritionally ALL weekend and I was up a pound this morning - go figure! haha! That's just the way it works sometimes!

I will send lots of happy thoughts your way for your hubby! Finding a job can be super stressful and I hope that everything will work itself out soon!!!
