So far, So good

Tuesday, May 24, 2011

Still going good with my foot rehab. It's not really progressing since a couple days after my visit, but by that point I was pretty much pain free all the time so it's hard to measure progress from there! :) If I sleep without the sock I do still have heel pain when I first step down barefoot - but if I stretch before hand and step into shoes I'm good to go. I don't sleep overnight w/out my Strassburg Sock - just sometimes I fall asleep without putting it on and then have to wake up and put it on later. Living in the basement means our nighttime TV watching is done from bed so it's easy to do!

Last night's run - forgot Mr. G (Garmin) at home, left my MP3 player at work (was using it for hula hooping), so....... no watch, no music, no nothin. I wanted to keep it a bit shorter since I was still pretty sore from TRX class and also ran 3.6 last time I ran which was longer than any continuous running thus far this year, so I took the short side of the greenway. Mapped it when I got home and it was about 2.22 miles - no clue on pace. And that's ok!

My new Brooks and Superfeet came in yesterday, but the Mizunos aren't supposed to arrive until Wednesday - weird.

I still think I may need to see a chiro for my hip/pelvis area, but I'll wait until at least after this next Sportsmed visit to try to spread out these co-pay costs.

Tonight we're going out to eat at the local EarthFare - they are having these "GOOD OLDE DAYS" meals and I got a coupon for $3 off a second meal and a free side, and so hubby and I are having a date out for dinner and then grocery shopping. HAHA. Soooo romantical. It's not a healthy menu, but I know the quality and source of ingredients will be top notch so I'm looking forward to it. :)

I established some ground rules for my Zumba class with those class members who have gone before - if I don't have two people signed up (aside from myself) by 3PM on class day, that day's class will be cancelled. I linked to our editable excel sheets and offerred to add or remove people from the sign up if they email and request it. I think this will be the best way for us to sometimes continue to Zumba if people still want to, let me know if I should stay or plan to go to the gym instead, and not have me getting irritated and resentful because I stick around and people don't show. If classes get cancelled for too long straight, we'll scrap the program.

As much as I love it, I can't afford to spend the time on it anymore without there being energy given back to it. It was a great experience, but if it doesn't work out - I'm mentally/emotionally/etc. ready to move on. :) Who knows, this might be the way to really bring it back! But I kinda doubt it. At least now I have definitive parameters to give as a guideline instead of it being a completely emotional decision. I like that! No one has to feel like I'm giving up on them or mad or selfish - if they don't sign up, then it's done. Period. Expectations are established and consequences named.

When WAVEDANCER7 was visiting we discussed me getting certified for Zumba teaching - I definitely feel very prepared for certification given my experiences, but we just can't afford it at this time. I do intend to get certified when we can afford to only sloowwwlly regain the cost of certification with me teaching. Otherwise the cost output is just not financially feasible.

Well this blog is boring! HAHA. I guess I had it coming - not every blog can be a million fun pictures. :) Speaking of which - I have to admit, I think sometimes I photograph better than I look in real life. It's disheartening to have people who have seen me in similar or better shape rave about how great I look NOW in photos. I'm like, nope- sorry - apparently I'm extremely photogenic and real-life Dana is still a sloppy mess. I've always been photogenic and felt it was kind of a curse. Better to look best in real life! Right? Although Tyra did say on top model that for a model it was the kiss of death to hear that they look better in person - they should ALWAYS be able to look better in photographs. So maybe I should just think of myself as a model. HAHA.

I got behind in all my blog reading and commenting. I'm just poking my head in here letting you know I've been reading...and commenting in my head. Well, not so much commenting with anything that you would find useful. Most likely. I did totally get the ANTM reference though and was like, "Oh yeah, I heard her say that!"

Oh and good Zumba thinking too.

The end.

I would prefer your problem- I'm the most unphotogenic person in pictures. I try to tell myself that it's just the pictures and that I do look better in person, but sometimes I have doubts about that, too. I know a lot of people don't like pics of them- it's soooo cool to hear that you do! That's awesome!

I hear you on the cost of certifications- it's rough to have to pay that much money if you only work so few hours... that's the reason I never renewed my Johnny G- Spin cerfification. For teaching at the Y, it's suffient to have the Y cerfification, so good enough for me.

LOL at your photogenic comment! I think I look pretty bad in pics AND in person! We just had to get ID pics taken for work and HOOO BOY! Mine is horrendous!

I think going to the grocery store after eating a not so healthy meal is perfect! You will be motivated to stay on track with your list! Enjoy your date!

I totally think that your new accountability program with the Zumba is AWESOME! I can see where it would be disappointing and frustrating and this is the perfect way to deal with it if you ask me! Have fun at the Earth Fare! Sounds like it is right up my alley! And I think that your photos are an accurate representation of you! You are photogenic, but I think you are one of those chicks that are gorgeous on and off film! And, Puh-leeze! "One hot mess" no you are NOT! emoticon

Saturday FUN Day!

Sunday, May 22, 2011

So this morning I was privileged to meet yet another awesome SparkFriend - WAVEDANCER7 (Juli) - and we headed to my gym for a TRX Class! :)

Candid of the wave dancer setting up her TRX straps:

And the two of us taken by a friendly classmate - Juli asked if we looked like fitness models and he said yes. haha :D

Juli took this fab picture of me striking a pushup/chest press pose:

There are no after class pictures - I was sooooo sweaty. hahahaa. The thought did not occur to me.

Then later the local SemiPro football team was holding a fundraiser for Tornado Disaster Relief - free entry if you donate blood, discounted entry for food/supply donations.

Confession - first time I've actually donated blood! I tried twice: 1st time I got turned away - it was after 9/11 (I think I said Katrina earlier but it was actually 9/11) and the place was mobbed. 2nd time they couldn't find my veins. I WAS heavier then... I think that makes a difference.

So I didn't know my blood type or anything, to be honest - I should know that by now at the not so young age of 28! I mean I'm not old or anything but good golly, I'm an ADULT. hahaha. Anyway - here's a shot of my little health screening results:

I think it's SO COOL that I'm type 0! I don't know if I'm +- I guess I still need to figure that out... but I still think that's pretty cool!

Also check out my awesome pulse rate and blood pressure readings! ROCK ON.

So then we got to watch a very one sided football game. HAHA.

My sweetsweet DH and me:

The game was played at the Alabama A&M Stadium... and started nearly 2 hours late. The opposing team's bus broke down and our team (The Rocket City Titans) had to go PICK THEM UP and bring them to the game! Crazy.

Also I got this cute little pink hat for donating blood:

I don't know if you can tell from this picture, but it actually says "BLOOD DONOR" around the edge of the brim - so cute!

I took a picture of my shoes tonight and also here's the picture I took of them all lined up - the crocs are on my feet, and the pointy toe flats are my usual work shoes that I LOVE but they have insoles in them now!

Dana you look great. I love the pic of you & hubby! And your hair is sO long again. I remember when you cut it, like last year I think. Anyway, when you donated blood, if you signed up for a donor card (which you will walk around with in your wallet just in case, God forbid, you get in an accident or something, they know your blood type & can get it ready for you) which you get in the mail, it will say if you are + or -. I like the croc sandals you have on in the pic, with the strap. I am all about comfort and style. You know what brand is super comfy, they care called Born or sometimes you will see it say b.o.c. Not the cutest, but they have a few that are nice. They are super soft leather, and arch support b/c I can't do flat everyday, and if you guys have a store like DSW (I think DSW has a website too), you can get them for cheaper rather than paying $100+. If you ever see them, just try them on.

Wow! Awesome BP, pulse and all!!!! There's such empowerment in good labs and numbers!!

About your feet: it sucks to feel held back by pain. I'm even starting to consider how my crappy footwear may be contributing to my own injury. I went for a jog/walk with the husband today because I actually FELT DECENT for the first time in weeks. We did 3 miles. By the time I got home, I could feel the pain creeping back in that groin/trochanter/piriformis area. An hour later, I was in agony. My shoes are old... my heels during the work week don't help.... and I'm feeling a shoe-shopping spree coming on! Anyway, the pics are great! How cool to meet up with Juli, work out together, and I love how long your hair has gotten! Gorgeous! You are a fitness model! :)

Photos make blogs so much more fun. :) I had no idea how long your hair's gotten! So cool you got to meet a Sparker who I assume you've "known" in Sparkland for a long time... that class looks fun but tough and you both look very fit there!! Your legs look tiny in the shoe shot too. :) and congrats on giving blood! I'm too much of a scardey cat to do it!

Foot Update!

Friday, May 20, 2011

So I finally weighed myself a couple times this week just to see what's up, and it's about the same. YAyyy...

I mean on the one hand, I'm glad I didn't gain with the tornado nonsense and all that. On the other hand - can I please move on finally! I've been doing well at tracking this week and I think if I have a solid weekend I'll be back on track to finally lose again.

Work is providing lunch today and they haven't told us from WHERE -- but I have lunch ready in the fridge in case there is no good option for me. Usually they try to get something healthy-ish.

My feet are feeling GOOD. No heel pain. Achilles still feels weird but no pain. Woot! I'm running today after work - going for somewhere between 3-4 miles. We will see! I need to figure out where I'm going to run....

This weekend my SparkPal WAVEDANCER7 is visiting my town! WOOT! :) Actually, she's already here I guess... eep! We're planning to hang out at some point tomorrow. :) Pretty excited about that!

Got some gaffer tape in the mail yesterday for hoop making AND - silver shimmer tape w/ stars. :) sooooo pretty. I can't wait to decorate some hoops with that gorgeousness!

First run in the insoles...

Thursday, May 19, 2011

Went well!!

But then when I tracked my run and added my new gear (I'm tracking my superfeet as a gear so I can be sure to keep up with the wear on them), I decided to actually check the mileage on my Mizuno's because the number showing on the main screen where you select which shoe to add to the workout seemed low.

It was.

I'm usually a 250-300max miler on shoes, and guess what the Mizunos were at 326 miles! WHOOPS. I thought maybe my newfound achilles tendinitis just didn't prefer the cut of the Mizunos or something, but I did notice that they didn't feel as good as my Brooks. NOW I know why. And also that I need new shoes. JOY! Sooooo much money is being spent on my poor tootsies. I am going to be doing every possible action I can do on my own to help them be good so that all the money we're spending on STUFF doesn't go to waste.

So... we ordered me two new pairs of shoes - one Mizuno and one Brooks (so that when these brooks die out I'm ready with new ones to rotate again and I can order THEN so I never get stuck with only one pair again - these brooks are at 168 so they're over halfway to their death anyway), and another set of superfeet.

I suspect running in those darn Mizunos that were older than I thought may have contributed to this whole thing as well. :P lame. But now I know and I'm on the path to recovery!

I love my superfeet! I want to buy a second pair so I don't have to change them out of my shoes when I rotate.
Where can you track the miles on your shoes and insoles as gear? Is that here, or another site? Thanks in advance!

Glad to hear the superfeet are working so far! Overmileage on the shoes is killer. For a long time, I was running a model of NB that could go up to 500 miles, YAY! But then I switched to a different model and they didn't last as long. Took an older pair out for a spin and BAM! IT band hell for a month!

Good luck with the new shoes!

Dr's Appointment and Whatnot

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

OMG maybe 3rd time's the charm. Or 4th. Ugh.

My computer has frozen a few times today and I've lost a big blog entry each time.

Anyway the Dr. Office was cool. They had little buzzer things like at casual sit down restaurants when there's a wait? To tell me go hand my insurance and ID to be copied, then again to tell me a nurse is coming to look for me. haha.

Then they took Xrays, and the exam room has an LCD display showing trivia, until the nurse came in and pulled up my page with a history timeline at the top and thumbnails of my X-Rays that the Dr was able to enlarge, zoom and adjust the contrast/darkness.

BAM - I got a heel spur! It looked like a little hook on the bottom of my heel, pointing toward my toes. Stupid thing.

So anyway, she said my achilles was non-reactive so she's not too worried about that, and my pain level in the heel is very low - so we're starting with some good running insoles (green superfeet) and getting me supportive shoes for everyday life, and specific stretchs and an exercise w/ a resistance band thingie.

So that led to several hours looking to find the least ugly shoes that also gave me proper support. I got some.

I didn't do any ST yesterday - but I DID find time somehow to cook some rice and some chicken and pack a bag with lunch and snacks for the rest of the week. WOOT. And I did my stretching. And also I'm to take two Naproxen Sodium in the morning and again in the evening with food.

I had no supportive shoes before other than my running shoes, I didn't take Naproxen as a regimen only occasionally and mostly not for the heel pain. haha. Headaches or cramps or whatnot. And I stretched after running, and wore my strassburg sock, but not a really consistent throughout the day stretching and exercise plan. So I'm hopeful that these changes will help. In any case I have a followup appointment in 2 weeks.

Some of the shoes I got:

Also got a pair of Crocs Sandals that are actually kind of cute (I couldn't find a picture! rats!) and some of those old school Adidas slides w/ the nubby massage insole thingie.

I took a picture of all my "ugly" shoes lined up. HAHA. I'll post that later. They're not really ugly, they're just not really my style, but I think I did a good job of finding the best of the worst.

May I ask where you got all these shoes? I desperately need some shoes to deal with my achilles/PF issues and I wear the crappiest shoes on earth. I've been to 3 Drs. lately to deal and I'm just not sure what exactly to look for in a shoe. Any suggestions you have would be great.
