Oh silly me!

So remember yesterday's blog when I was lamenting how I couldn't go running today?

I'm a dope. All it took was a little extra (and by little I mean VERY LITTLE) brain power to realize that I could drop my DH off at the exam he had to proctor, go run and shower AT THE GYM, and then go pick him up and then we can run by home, I grab my lunch, and he takes me to work.

The problem before was thinking that if I left I wouldn't have enough time to shower post workout and still get to work on time -- but I forgot, I could just run on campus and use the GYM shower HELLO (haven't showered there in a while since we live so close to the gym now) while he could still be proctoring the exam and whatnot. *DINGDINGDING* - lightbulb!

So anyway -- I'm glad I had some SparkFriends tossing out suggestions on how to work it out so I could go run, even though I didn't use THEIR suggestions it got me THINKING anyway. Now NEXT Thursday is a different scenario but I can plan for that to be my off day and do something on Wednesday for sure.

ANYWAY - in the rush of preparing my lunch ahead of time and packing a bag for the gym I forgot to put on my HRM watch. OOPS! So I was wearing the transmitter strap which was broadcasting my Heart Rate out to nowhereland. ;) haha. I now about what time I started and I checked the clock in the car when I got back, so I know I ran around an 11:46 pace and that includes my 5 min walking warmup -- I know I usually walk almost exactly through the MIA song Bamboo Banga (yep just checked Amazon and it's 4:58 in length) other times I've used Kala for my music so I just went with that. :D hehehe.

I LOVED my run today, too. I ran w/ my new bondiband ponytail hat - so cute. The only thing is I forgot my sunglasses so I was a little squinty eyed at times -- actually I tend to close whichever eye is closest to the sun (in this case my right eye) if it's bright. haha. So I was running one-eyed like a pirate - ARRGH!

Yesterday was day 1 of no candy and I had my hot chocolate and saw that THAT will be running out soon so I will have to be wise with choosing when to have it. ;) Last night we had baked potatoes and I improvised some Chili out of TVP - and DH complemented it! YAY! :D You can see about what I used on my nutrition tracker for last night but let's say it's ketchup, mustard, worcestershire sauce, onion powder, chili powder, garlic powder.... oh and onions. Yes.

AND TOMORROW'S FRIDAY!!!!!!! :D

Tomorrow I will see how many reps I can do in one set of these exercises w/ my starting weights:

Deadlifts - SHORT bar only (now using Olympic bar + 30lbs)
Dumbbell Shoulder Press - 15lbs (I'm now using 20lbs)
Wide Grip Lat Pulldown - 40lbs (now using 65 or 60)
Lunges - BODYWEIGHT (now using 30lbs)
Swiss Ball Crunches - Bodyweight (now using 8lb medicine ball)

So that should be fun... except for how many trillion lunges I might end up doing. HAHAHA. Will have to keep that in mind for Saturday....

    I have a great mental image of you running with a patch on one eye. I know you don't wear a patch, but it's the image that's in my head after you mentioned running like a pirate. =D

Nice job on figuring out how to get a run in and how to calculate your times w/out the watch... and for such a strong workout!

So much of this process does seem to depend on creative planning, preparation, and logistics...

I've showered and changed just about everywhere - the at work, the THREE gyms I work out at, the place where we do kayak rolling etc. etc. It's got so I just keep a towel and shower stuff in the car 'cuz you never know... LOL

Balance?

I need to find my equilibrium!

It seems like the past two weeks have been sluggish during the week with ok eating, and then crazy activity filled on the weekends with haywire eating! :D

Ok last weekend I did make a lot of good choices in with the not so good, but still. I think I need to try to make things a little more even.

This week won't be the week. HAHA! :D Today I spent time preparing batches of rice and chicken instead of going on my run. Maybe I could have done both if I had planned better, but with the first two days of my week being devoted to Sister time it didn't happen then -- although I DID run on Monday which is usually an off day for me. I lifted and erged yesterday so that is definitely good.

But tomorrow I will not be able to get out of the house - DH will have the car -- before lunch. :P sooooo I kind of squandered my chance today. Should've saved the cooking for tomorrow. I can't run from my house cause we're on a short little street that goes onto a "parkway" which has almost no shoulder or anything. SOOO I'm considering doing a workout video at home so I don't feel like a slug. Weight lifting on Friday. Zumba and run on Saturday. Rowing Sunday. I do like being active on the weekends! Otherwise the weekends just get full of slothfulness -- but other than Church and a Rowing Club meeting the rest of my weekend is wide open and I intend for it to stay that way!!!!!

P.S. -- Apparently the team Booty Busters was already taken, they emailed to ask if I was the captain or SO AND SO who registered on 2/19. RATS! But I asked if we could be the BEAUTIFUL Booty Busters, and so we are. :) HAHA. I feel SLIGHTLY bad that the other team is now just regular old Booty Busters and we're the Beautiful ones but eh.

P.P.S. -- I'm starting a streak of "No desserts or candy EXCEPT sugar free gum and hot chocolatew/marshmallows" for a while. I gotta kill this sugar beast! And we still have some hot chocolate and marshmallows so I will allow those until they are gone at least and will re-evaluate at that point how I'm doing.

    I need that balance. Some days the eating just gets a little crazy or lost in with everything else that is going on. Kudos on getting some cooking done already. That is always a time killer. And I think the BEAUTIFUL Booty Busters is a WAY better name!

    Good luck on eliminating your sugar beast, Dana. I've sworn off cookies and ice cream and it's helped me a lot. Sometimes, we'll buy cinnamon almonds from Trader Joe's. They are sweet enough but still have great nutrition numbers.

    You are so right about balancing out the week and the weekend. I am just the opposite of you, busy week, slothlike on the weekend. It will be better here in a bit because I actually have a couple free days coming where all I have is work.

Don't feel bad about Sistertime. We concentrate on eating good and getting our fitness that we sometime neglect our relationships. It's good to make that a priority.

    That is hilarious about the team name! Refined sugar is totally evil, and once you cut it out it is so easy to go without. Jake and I eat a piece of dark 70% cacao chocolate every night, so much more satisfying and not enough sugar to trigger cravings.

    I like Patty's bike idea. And even if it's too dangerous to ride to work (I don't ride my bike ANYWHERE, the drivers here are crazy!), you could buy a trainer for it and have an instant stationary bike in your living room! I don't think the trainers are too expensive.

I like to fill my weekends with activity, too. Otherwise, I'm sooooo sluggish, it's like my brain is in a fog. Larry forces me outthe door if I'm leaning towards taking a Sunday off b/c otherwise I'm just moping around. Exercise is my drug! :D

    I love "open week-ends".. I won't see those until summer?!

I'd suggest getting a bike-- not an expensive one by any means, but one that is good for transportation! Being from Europe, I would go bonkers thinking I lived somewhere where I was stuck without a car-LOL- so it must be the American in you that doesn't mind...

Actually, I purposefully live in a suburb with sidewalks... even though they are old and some of them not so well maintained... and we have bus stops... and lots of people out walking.. well, not nearly as many in the winter, but you know what I mean..

Also, where there is a way, there is a will.. could someone come pick you up? Or do you really don't want to run? Either one is totally cool, just wanted to mention it, so you don't feel so "stuck"...

DH and I used to have 1 car for a few years- I honestly kind of liked it... ( well to a certain degree) I had to pick him up from work every night and the guys knew me all-LOL- but since he had to take me places, he went shopping "with me"... which never happens anymore... so there are lots of advantages to people with 1 car....

Anyways, just wanted to stop by to see how your week is.. I am hoping to make lots of gorgeous salad tonight!

So my sister came and went - we had so much fun while she was here!

Sunday was church - then some hanging out and then ROWING! :D YAY! And then that night I made some lentils/rice/chicken number and then CAKE. :D haha. Yes, cake.

So that day was good eating except for the cake...

Then Monday we played some Little Big Planet (video game for those of you who are not in the know!), then we went and ran together - so fun to get to run with my sister! :D then...... oh yes FIVE GUYS burgers and fries. I had not eaten much this day so far, and while I did eat some fries and peanuts, I made sure to get the little burger. Then we went to the store and back home, hung out some more -- then to band! :D She came to listen to us play and then we went home and out to Yogurt Mountain - another indulgence for sure. I love that place. (one of those put it all in a cardboard bowl thing and then you pay for how much it weighs - toppings and all.) Then we picked up our friend who served his mission in Mongolia also, he and my sister served in the same area and both doing Mongolian Sign Language for a while so they're good pals.... and we spent the rest of the night making "buuz"

When they pronounced it to me it sounds like bodes. But in any case, it was delicious. We did not add any garlic and we made it with lean sirloin I had purchased on sale a while back and was sitting in the freezer. WOOT!

According to my sister and friend, they often will add extra fat when they make them in Mongolia -- and apparently camel fat is the most delicious according to them! :D haha. But it was fun to learn that I could make these things in my little steamer. The one think I didn't do (well that I couldn't figure out on my own - like chopping the meat BWAHA) was make the dough -- my sister just kinda put flour and water together. At least the recipe at the link above provides some amounts to start with, but of course they do it all by feeling in Mongolia as this is a very traditional food. Recently there was a festival "Tsagaan Sar" which is the Lunar New Year celebration -- and this is apparently a time to get totally stuffed with tons of buuz. They make huge quantities leading up to it and freeze them to save for the holiday feast. :) We did not make a huge amount -- I think it was about 30 of the little buuz... I had 8, and there were 4 of us so that sounds about right.

While they were steaming we played Beatles Rock Band and we took pause breaks when the steamer dinged to go eat a couple more buuz. :D hehe.

This morning it was sleeping in a bit more to feel more on balance with sleep and then I dropped my sister to work w/ her friend on compiling a Mongolian Sign Language Dictionary specifically for LDS Missionaries while I went to the gym.

I did my "SPECIAL WORKOUT" for Workout A of Stage 1 and here's how it went:

These are all SINGLE SETS working as long as possible, or until utter boredom.

Squats - 75, body weight only. Now in my regular workouts I'm using an Olympic size bar (45lbs) w/ an added 30 I think?
Wall Pushups - 41 - Now I'm doing pushups from the 2nd run of a bench press station on the bar.
Seated Rows - on 40lb - 50 Now I'm using 70lbs.
Step Ups - 30lbs, 5risers. Now I'm using 40lbs on a weightbench (higher than the risers)
Prone Jacks - 20 -- This is less dramatic, but it had to be one set only and this far the largest set I've completed of these is 15. The first week I think I only had to do 2 sets of 8 or 10?

So that felt really good to do that, I also rowed 1k as a warmup on the erg (that takes about 5min if I'm going somewhat slow just FYI) and afterwards I did some stretching and then it was off to pick up my sister, go home, PROTEIN SMOOTHIE! (made my sister some to try), shower, makelunch/eat, and it was saying by to my sister as I was going off to work.

She's home safely (YAY!) and I'll be seeing her again soon (DOUBLE YAY!) because she's gonna come run a 5K with me at the end of March (TRIPLE YAY!!!).

I registered us today for the Rumpshaker 5K in Birmingham, AL -- it benefits Colon Cancer Awareness and they will have on display a 20ft inflatable colon. WOOT. :)

Together with a few ladies from my work we are forming team Booty Busters. I just have to make sure they get registered and whatnot -- it will be the first 5K for all of them, and my sisters first official 5K (having done her own a few times, and one as a family 5K with homemade T-Shirts and everything!), so I'm excited to be helping them all do the race... although I'm a bit concerned about my co-workers training, I can't make them do it. I've offerred to run with them on weekends but no one's taken me up on it yet. :P haha. Oh well. I know me and my sister will have fun if nothing else.

There were pictures taken this weekend but I don't have any of them ready to post yet, but I will probably be posting some soon...

ALSO - my right quad has been twitching off and on since yesterday and it's driving me INSANE. That is all.

    OMG, so much to comment on!!! I will start with the Rumpshaker for Colons! That is awesome! Along with a 20 foot inflatable colon! Do you get to run through it??

We have Little Big Planet but I have not played yet - I am no good at video games. I think Larry bought the Wii (that's what it's played on, right??) just for that game!

Yogurt Mountain sounds like the BOMB!! When I was in college, we used to kind of do that with the frozen yogurt machine and all the toppings.. mmm! Of course, it was all included with the meal plan (all-u-can eat) so there was HUGE potential for waistline damage there!

The buuz sound awesome, I love dumplings!All kinds. Also, you can buy wonton wrappers - it's not "traditional" but will save you time, in case you want to make again. I haven't done dumplings in ages, so this post is going to make me do them soon!

And of course... awesome time with your sis! I'm so glad you had a good visit with her! :D

Feeling Positive!

Other than being utterly sleep deprived at the moment, things are going well! :)

Not only did I resist the call of stupid fast food on Friday night, last night I resisted the crappy pizza (which people ate and then said was crappy and my DH said it wasn't agreeing with his stomach). I had some chips and salsa -- counted my chips even. I needed to eat something! And then we went to this place where I got a falafel wrap and my sister and I split a side order of hummus. NOT BAD.

Drank water, of course -- I never drink anything but water. I love water, anything else makes me just want water to cleanse my palate afterward so... ? yeah.

OH yes - I did my lifting and came home, protein smoothie, PB and pretzel sticks, shower, out the door, temple, drive straight back, change, book it to the Grad Student Olympics.

Let me just say that the Olympics themselves made me feel sooooooo unathletic. :( It really took me back to obese days mentally and it was depressing. I have never practiced doing any SPORTS after getting fit! I don't know how to interact w/ dodgeball or volleyball - I have no practice. So yeah... although I didn't sweat or get winded doing anything (which is different) my skill levels at anything didn't naturally improve with fitness. :P hahahaha. *sigh* Anything I've done has essentially involved repeated motions - no reflexes involved! :P Or not a lot at least.

BUT! I tried. And I think I did well with food especially considering my lack of sleep, which usually drives me into FOOD MADNESS.

I will call that a win for yesterday for sure! :D And I will try to manage the food madness today as I didn't really get enough sleep last night either -- although definitely MORE than the almost 3 I got on Friday night. :P A fun weekend planned, but yeah -- forgot to book SLEEP into the plan. :) haha.

    I am so with you! I am totally athletic, but not coordinated! You are a rower so you have that going for you as far as a team sport :)! I always got hit in the head with the volleyball and was last pick for any team. Frankly, I blame my coming late to exercise on PE always being about sports, when you and I are living proof that people can be super athletic and love exercise and not enjoy or participate in team sports! There should be more of a range of activities for kids, imo.

    I always had to deal with "slow" reflexes-LOL- when I played tennis, there was this ball machine that spit out balls and it was struggle to keep up once they turned up the speed... it was always so depressing-LOL! I played some volleyball and a bit of bateminton a little hand and basketball in school gym, but not a real team- except for a little Volleyball... so team sports and me... ummm, yeh.. you at least out there are doing it!

    You are too doing a sport! Your crewing (or whatever it's called) is athletic, a sport, and something you have to be coordinated for! Just 'cause you aren't the greatest dodgeball player... But I do understand what you mean. Just remember... you rock!

    That's a BIG win!! I'll admit I thought you might cave to the "crappy pizza" Congrats on avoiding its siren call.

As for sports... I consider myself somewhat athletic now, but I could NEVER do any team sports... I am SO unco-ordinated it's funny!! That's why I like strength training... I'm only accountable to myself!!

    Nice job on resisting food temptations! I'm with you on sports - never been good at any team sport, although I was dragged to volleyball for quite a while by a friend... That's why we have so many choices in life :) Have a great rest of the weekend!

    This is an interesting perspective--it's a great reminder that there's a difference between being fit and being... I dunno the right word... reflex-oriented-ish? My husband is a total wimp at endurance things, but he's FABULOUS at any sport--I'm the total opposite. I think this speaks to that.

Good choices passing up that pizza (I read your blog that said you were intending to). I hope your food stays on track today after not getting much sleep. Is a nap in the cards by any chance?

    i agree with you on the olympics!!!! i didnt have high expections to begin with b/c i have never really played any sports and i hated playing those types of games in gym class when i was a kid, but i wanted to do this since i thought it would be fun for the group to hang out but also b/c i thought i'd at least do OK! nicole and i were talking about that before the event b/c we were talking about when people are active and fit, but not necessarily athletic!!! LOL, so i think a lot of us fall into that category :) she was talking about how some of the other students exercise on a regular basis, and i said, well i exercise on a regular basis too but that doesnt say ANYTHING about what my dodgeball, basketball, etc skills will be like. ur right, its a totally different kind of thing. i still had fun though!!! enjoy the rest of your afternoon

Ears a ringin'!

My ears are still ringing from the show last night - so worth it. :)

We got to see our favorite high school rockstars opening up first (The Motions) then this little punk rock n' roll band I had never heard of/seen called The River City Tanlines who I LOVED. DH was less a fan, but he's never been that into that kind of sound so I wasn't super surprised. Then a very talented but less exciting group playing some kind of southern bluesy rock situation - I just was anxious to see the main event at that point - Baak Gwai - especially since I knew I had to be at work at 6:30am this morning! :P

Well -- Baak Gwai was soooooo worth the wait, even though they barely got to play because the place was closing. They told us after the show that they had like 6 more songs planned! haha. :P BUT! DH has been bugging them for ages to play a song called WWJCD which is an older tune from them, never heard it live - they played it and some other older songs and the crowd was HYPE. There was some MOSHING going on, and we were on a 2nd floor of a Mellow Mushroom and that floor was bouncing. HAHAHA I was slightly concerned we were going to cave the place in....

ANYWAY - when we got home I quickly ate a modest meal - sandwich, cheese puffs, piece of chocolate - and ended up 18cals over for the day, so considering I didn't really cook a healthy dinner and I still had another piece of chocolate -- I'm very proud of those results. I chose my options wisely! I ate some tuna on wasa crackers prior to going to the concert -- helped me stay full even though we left at like... 10 and didn't get home until 3am! I resisted all urges from DH to go pick up food on the way home, too! :)

This morning my alarm went off at 6:10 - yeah, I know, it takes me like 5min to drive to work and I can throw on clothes with the greatest of speed (since I'm going to the gym right after work nothing more is needed!) well... I "reset" my alarm for 6:15 and then the next thing I know I'm laying in bed looking at the clock and it says 6:34. EEK! I rushed and got to work by 6:50. My employees start working phone calls at 7AM and I have to do stuff to get those ready but I had calls out there for them at 7:01 so I'm pretty thrilled about that. HAHA :D I'm glad I woke up!

Grabbed a "Glenny's Brown Rice Marshmallow Treat", an apple, and had the yogurt left at work from the snack I skipped yesterday. Did well for me.

After work I will go do my final of the Stage 1 workouts for NROL4W (not counting the special ones), go home, drink my protein smoothie, maybe eat, shower, and head to Birmingham, AL.

After the temple I'm not sure if my family plans to eat or what. So we'll either eat out somewhere there and THEN I'll run back home, get ready for the Grad Student Olympics thing (Volleyball, Dodgeball, Cornhole, Basketball and Movie Trivia!) - ORRRRRRRR we don't eat out, rush home, EAT then go. Either way I gotta get some food before we go there so I can resist the STUPID GROSS CRAPPY free pizza. I know it's bad, but it's still for some reason hard to resist. Will not do it tonight! *POWER!* RAWR!

    Cornhole? LOL I was catching up on your blogs and reading reading reading. You deserve more than a cornhole? comment but....now I don't know which way is up. Could be the Nyquil talking too. Way to go on your virtual 10k! And the mellow mushroom rocking floor...sounds a little scary...fun scary...but fun. Yay chocolate, but uhh...yuckech on the conversation hearts. lol!

    Woke up at 6:34 and made it to work by 6:50??? That's dang impressive! Glad you enjoyed the concert AND were able to do so well with your nutrition. Hope your today goes well too!
