Dana is POOPED!

Friday, February 05, 2010

Last night -- another nice healthy dinner followed by chocolate. :)

I actually was like - I want to keep eating and eating! And DH was like, no come here and sit with me and we will fill ourselves with comedy. :) hahaha And we continued to watch the funny NBC Thursday night lineup. :)

This morning I got up, couldn't find my tights at first, called my rowing coach and asked if she would call when she was sure if we were rowing or not (constant rain all day yesterday and in the night led me to be about 99.9% sure things would be cancelled.) She took so long getting back to me that I was all the way ready and about to drive over there when I got the message - NO ROW!

So back to bed. I set my alarm so I could still get up and go to the gym to lift... um... but then I didn't. TOO TIRED. So I got some more sleep. And tomorrow I will NOT SET AN ALARM . I will sleep till I feel like getting up. And I will go to the gym and lift and then go run. :) And it will be awesome -- because I will be well rested and pumped.

As for today I am feeling slightly better than earlier in the week due to getting the "extra" sleep yesterday and this morning, but waking up in the middle of it all really kind of ruins the effect I think... :P But more IS better.

OK -- and for the record I am WAY SUPER CRAZY excited about some awesome things coming up next week -- AKA, the best week EVER. For one thing I will be only working 3 days next week. :D hehe. The reasons WHY are the best though:

Monday my awesome SparkFriend HOPERY and her family will be visiting! :D WOOHOO! They are making the effort on a move to pass through my town and I'm so stoked. We have plans to run and make good homemade pizza together. :)

Then Friday I was able to get work covered so I can take the day off so I will be able to go to the SONDRE LERCHE CONCERT! :D YAY! I'm also hoping we might be able to get a chance to go to the MERCEDES MARATHON EXPO since it will be going on that day... which leads me into the Marathon weekend!

Saturday SparkFriend CLOVERR1 will be coming up and we (she and maybe some of our teammates) will be decorating our team T-Shirts :D (Cute but Psycho - the other 3 runners are in the Psych dept and my DH is, and CLOVERR1 doesn't mind being lumped with Psychos hahaha). And then Sunday - THE RELAY!!!!! :D

So my efforts to aid with the Learn to Row, involving being available every morning at 5am even though I didn't have to row on two of those days, will be rewarded with a super fun and awesome week and weekend to come!

This weekend will be about some preparation for those things basically -- not least important some GOOD QUALITY UNINTERRUPTED SLEEP! A good training run of 7.6miles, some grocery shopping, finding my fabric paint in our storage unit... haha :D Stuff like that.

how fun to connect in RL with those sparkfriends! The only sparkfriends I ever see in RL are the people I work with, one of whom has been my best friend since we were 11 years old! I did get to meet you in San Diego though, and that was so neat! I knew you were tall, but it still blew me away to stand next to you!

On sleep: I have not gotten any more than 6 hours per night, this entire week. bad bad bad. Ny HGH is probably wayyy down. I would skip yoga tomorrow, except that I am subbing. Subbing the class keeps me accountable, I guess, but I too plan on catching up on some zzzs this weekend!
Love those naps!

My boat got cancelled!

Thursday, February 04, 2010

HURRAH! :D hahahaha

Normally that would be a source of disappointment and irritation but after this week, all I can say is... SWEET!

We were one short, so my coach gathered all the newbies in one boat and only needed 2 vets to fill it out. It was a good day for it as they have already learned quite a bit so having a boat mostly full of new rowers won't be SO bad and they will all still get to keep learning. AND I got to say - PEACE OUT I'M GOING TO BED!

Also it was raining -- and I was more than happy NOT to row in the cold AND rain. (Not as cold as yesterday or Monday, but still.) So into bed with me -- but then I had to get up and eat an apple cause my tummy was rumbly -- and then I could fall asleep. I was able to get to sleep soon after 6am, and got up a little after 11am. So.... 1-5 (about 4hrs) and 6-11 (about 5 hrs) for a total of 9 hrs. I'm feeling much more human and normal today. Still tough to get up at 11 -- it was time to run and I was not feeling it. I'm SORE from yesterday's NROL4W! But I knew I needed to.

So I semi-bundled - tights and a few upper body layers - and got going. It was sprinkling, not too bad, and once I got going I felt really good and wished I had more time to run longer. Instead I decided to FARTLEK my way back on the 2nd half -- sprinting up every incline. :D It definitely helped to take advantage of some of my enthusiasm.

Oh and I went twice as far as I did on the treadmill, my pace was faster, and my cal burn PLUS cooldown was less than 40 more calories. hahaha You can really tell how my heart was racing on that beast machine yesterday.

I had a splurge of some little chocolate candies last night for my birthday after a nice healthy dinner. :) I think that might be my splurge of the week since I have no plans to splurge this weekend -- we'll see what my DH has in mind though! haha.

So whaddya think of rowing as a workout for upper body? Pretty good, no? I've been thinking about it, trying to get out of actually lifting weights in the gym. You think it's a good substitute? We can pretty much do that year round here, although it's as wet above the water as in it right now...been raining and gray for days.

I LOVE running outside in the rain. I think I shall do just exactly that tomorrow. I ran 10 miles on Sunday, cold, darkish, damp. Very few people out there. That was cool. And I sprinted harder than I think I've sprinted since high school, doing intervals almost all the way. I wanted to puke when it was over. I almost had to call my husband to drive the 20 miles into town to get me, I was so wiped out.

But I can walk today, so it was all worth it.

P.S. What's NROL4W?

It's my birthday! :D

And this is my 3rd one so far in a Healthy BMI range! :D That is SO EXCITING!!!!

I took the RealAge test again and my age went UP from last time I think -- last time I was a teenager, this time 23.4 -- still younger than my actual age of 27.

The reasons it went up: stress (moving and close family dying w/in the past 12 months), and not having a dog! :(

YES! It actually told me that!

But what can you really do about those things? Granted, not having a dog and the other stresses DID get to me -- not the moving so much, but yeah. Some of the health answers actually improved -- like flossing everyday now! :D More veggies have become common for me, more vigorous strength training and cardio... stuff like that.

So RealAge can get over it, I've made healthy improvements since last year and it's ok that stresses of life age me a bit, who can really avoid them? :D I'm still younger than my chronological age. hehehe.

So this morning I got up and went rowing -- today was more rowing but I still didn't count it for cardio. Too hard to track with all the sitting in between and it was so slow my heart rate honestly didn't really get elevated. Then to the gym for LIFTING! :D This week the workouts went from 2 sets of 12 to 3 sets of 10 -- and from 2 sets of 10 for core to 3 sets of 12!!!

I added some small weights to the Olympic Bar for the squat - WOOT. The powerlifting room was FULL so I could not use the squat rack, but I made due with some other lifting station. It was slightly awkward to unrack/rack the weight, but I needed assistance since although I might have been able to lift it to get it behind my head, I don't think I could have brought it back in front. :P

Pushups were similar to last week but felt better and 3 sets vs 2 so woohoo on that front. Seated Rows about the same -- feel I will up the weight on these next week though.

Step Ups I finally moved to the bench instead of using step risers: The first week I used a stack of 4 I think, then 5, then 6 - and I think the bench is the same height as 6 risers - close anyway. Now I don't have to bother with finding and stacking risers before I do my Step Ups at least -- but I had to step down the weight on the final set - those were killing me. I kept getting stuck at my leg alllmost straight and my "dangle" leg would jump up reflexively onto the bench. But I think I fixed that. :P

Prone jacks were the core exercise for today and they went pretty well especially considering the increase in the sets/reps! The first set I had to re-setup after the first 8, so it was like a set of 8 and 4 back to back asap. Then the second set was a perfect 12. :D WOOHOO! Last set, 10... and then I couldn't do anymore. I reset up but my muscles just would not support it. So that was it for today!

For lifting.

Then it was time to run -- and this morning for rowing I was BUNDLED UP again -and it actually got colder AS we were out there. When we left the dock was normal, but when we got back it was covered in frost and some ice! So then I headed to the gym, changed to lighter clothing to lift. Then I was like -- I do NOT feel like bundling all up again to go back outside... ugh. So I decided today would be the day I would try running on the treadmill again.

UGH! It was so bad if I hadn't been so tired I would've headed outside. But I decided to stick with it for a mile. The good thing? I learned that I can actually get in a BIT of a groove on the treadmill -- I can look around a bit without feeling like my feet are going to go rogue on me. AND NOT GET HURT! I tried running on a treadmill the first time soon after finishing C25K and I jacked up my hip -- that was the first of my two IT band related running hiatuses. The bad thing? I was going SLOWER than usual but my HR was HIGHER. It was killing me. :P Granted -- I was REALLY tired, so maybe it was fatigue that really had me hating it. Plus I had no music and I'm way too used to being able to look around at stuff and listen to my tunes... the TV's in the cardio arena were just getting on my nerves. HAHAHA

I'll give it another chance someday I think, when I'm less tired and when I'm fully prepared with musical enjoyment, but let's just say today taught me why they call it the DREADMILL.

Home, eat, sleep. Wake up - get ready, and get birthday presents! :D I got two blu-rays - Twilgiht and Inglorious Basterds (YAY!!!!!) and some wicked awesome looking drumsticks for Rock Band - they are clear and are supposed to LIGHT UP when you strike with them! I'm hoping maybe to try them out tonight if I'm not too beat. :)

I also got "notified" of my Valentine's present -- tickets to see Sondre Lerche!!!!!! :D it's 2/12 and a Friday night so I have to arrange work and whatnot, so I had to know about it. :)

Much better today!

Tuesday, February 02, 2010

One misstep today which I may come to regret tomorrow... but otherwise - better!

It was much much warmer for rowing this morning. I wore almost the same thing -- but minus the hoodie/scarf/hat. and was nicely warm. Fingers and toes were comfy. :)

But then I realized that although I brought my other shoes, my notepad, an apple for between rowing and lifting -- I forgot that this week was new reps/sets numbers. I THOUGHT it was 3 reps of 10 (turns out I was right for most of it -- abs is 3 sets of 12!), but decided to go home and do it tomorrow instead. I knew if I went home to check I wouldn't leave, so I decided to make this morning very productive!

I cooked chicken and hard boiled eggs to prep some quick protein for the week, also sliced some mushrooms. And I ate and watched House while all this was going on. Then I took a LOOOOOOOONG time with showering and I blew my hair mostly dry and got into bed by 10:10am, waking back up at 12:20.

I went to bed last night a few minutes before midnight, was probably asleep at or soon after midnight, and woke up this morning at 4:55AM. So...... I got roughly 7 total hours of sleep, but not all together.

And I ate a good amount of food before the morning nap, so before leaving for work I needed more! Otherwise it'd be like...5+ hrs till my snack, 7+ to LUNCH so I'd be starving all day.

As it is I still feel a bit hungry but lunch in less than an hour - I can make it!

Last night I went over my calorie ranges by an apple. OK so I also had a piece of chocolate - ONE little dove dark chocolate, but I planned that all day and I added the apple at the last minute. I figured if I was still hungry I could eat something healthy and it really did the trick. Not too bad for a day on such little sleep!

So today I think I'll be able to stay within, if not just barely over.

The one thing that's a bummer is that I haven't burned any countable calories for the week yet - I'm not counting band or these learn to row sessions for such little effort (although I do still get to carry the boat and the launch and go up and down the hill with oars so I'm getting SOME bonus stuff in there)... But that's just it. I'm considering all that bonus to the REAL DEAL. So that misstep being that because I didn't prepare properly, tomorrow I must row, lift, and then run. But I've done it before, I can do it again.

The lifting will be longer tomorrow due to more sets, so extra rest period, and more reps than the last two weeks. So I plan to run short and easy to compensate -- there's a 1.75 mile run that I can run around campus from the gym that will do just fine.

Then Thursday - row+run
Friday - row
Saturday SLEEP IN HALLELUJAH! Then... zumba?

I want to run 7.6 miles on Saturday so I must see if I think doing that post zumba will be a good idea or not. If not, then ok that's fine -- running it is. And then Sunday row/zumba/something.

I don't think I mentioned that Sunday I didn't go to the gym cause my DH and I went to a GAMING convention at the University. :D Board/Video games. We saw a concert of video game music and a cosplay contest. (Cosplay = costume play and basically means people dressed up like characters from video games/movies/comics etc. and sometimes doing a bit in character)

The girl who won was dressed as a "Team Rocket" grunt from Pokemon - she was adorable and I thought she looked familiar and then come Monday night at band - THERE SHE WAS in the percussion section. :D So I congratulated her and she looked thoroughly embarrassed to be recognized outside of the con for THAT. :) haha. I'd love to do a cosplay someday... There was a Rock Band contest but we didn't stay for that cause we apparently arrived too late to register and didn't feel like watching OTHER people rock.

In other news my poor DH is discouraged and depressed regarding his dissertation work. :( I'm trying to do all I can to uplift, encourage, and support him. I want to suggest exercise but I don't think he'll take that suggestion too well... but I just know that the stress relief and endorphins will help give positive energy -- not to mention the added sense of accomplishing SOMETHING on a day to day basis.

I might still work on suggesting that...

Sounds like a great time. And you've got some serious rowing going on. DH will figure it out but he's in an tough spot right now. Good for you for encouraging him!

With all the steampunk you guys are into, you oughta cosplay something from Girl Genius! LOL

I enjoy board games. One of my current favorites is the Pegasus version of Battlestar Galactica. I call it "Shadows over Caprica" because of the hidden traitor aspect like in Shadows over Camelot. It is so much fun hunting Cylons... Or BEING one and sneakily messing with the other players. hehehe

Hang in there with the dissertation. What's the problem? Not enough guidance from the deadbeat adviser?

I got my husband to start riding his bike again by telling him he needed to stop moping and get out of my damned house. Tough love, but I made sure to follow it up with reminding him how good it feels to exercise and telling him that I think he's sexy. Now he rides at least 3 times a week. :D Sometimes we all just need the truth, and I bet it will make his work that much better.

Good luck with it!

The cold!

Monday, February 01, 2010

So this winter is the year I stopped being a wuss about cold weather and working out.

Honestly -- if ZORBS13 can get out there in a -20 something windchill in canada while she's nearly a month away from delivering a baby and run -- I can be tough, too. HAHAHAHA :D

I truly believe it's all about having the proper gear -- my gear is not so proper, but I have enough to make due. I'd like to have some more stuff instead of having to layer so many things that are not really well suited to the purpose, but it's good enough to allow me to continue working it out.

I think I could do with some warmer tights -- I may not need them often right now -- maybe not often enough to warrant the cost -- but eventually I'd like to add that to my arsenal. The ones I have are great for cooler weather, but 30 and below they are not really warm enough -- maybe some think it isn't worth wearing tights in weather from 30-50 degrees but for me it totally is. :D warmer than that and I'll let some of my legs brave the cold bare no problem.

I'd like to get some items to block the wind as well -- the wind has been kinda nuts here lately! Something to adore when it's hot out, but in the cold it's a nightmare. That and some kind of actual thin/warm layers for the top. I've got a longsleeve tech shirt but it's VERY meshy and not super warm, mostly just an extra thin layer that can cover my arms (Memphis Marathon T). I definitely have to layer over that to stay warm -- but let's say I had something like a thin fleece or whatnot. Or even just a windbreaking jacket -- I think I could go with the long sleeve tech shirt and one other layer and be good up top. But as it is, I wear short sleeve tech, long sleeve tech, and another long sleeve REGULAR T-shirt to add a layer and block the wind a bit more.

Anyway this is a lot of rambling to get to the point that this morning I was rowing -- the plan before yesterday afternoon was that I was rowing only on Friday morning but yesterday I get an email that the lineups have changed cause we have 2 more new people so they had to split to TWO boats.

The unique thing is that I'm rowing STROKE seat! :D That's the first of the lineup, the setter of pace and form -- now, previously I've been rowing in ONLY port rigged boats -- meaning the stroke seat is rigged on port side. However -- the boat I'm rowing in this week is starboard rigged. So I'm not learning to be bisweptual yet, but I AM getting to be the stroke seat still. Very fun.

But I'm rowing EVERY MORNING THIS WEEK. EEK! 5:15am call time at the boat house. And that meant it would be very cold this morning -- and unlike when I'm running, I knew that with this being the newbies first day on the water, there would be LOTS of holding still.

So I layered up like a champ!

Here's a picture:

The layers --
Bottom half: undies (obviously), full length running tights, running knee-length/capris, thin ankle socks, knee high thicker socks.

My shoes don't really count because you don't wear them in the boat -- but you put your feet inside of the boat's shoes that are attached inside the boat. My toes were TOTALLY NUMB by the time we were done. Those socks were NOT really meant to keep feet warm. What I hear is that WOOL socks are the way to go in the cold and I really need to get some!

Top half: padded sports bra (extra warmth!), short sleeve tech shirt, long sleeve tech shirt, hoodie, scarf, hat, gloves.

My hands were also getting kinda numb toward the end -- I think I need some warmer gloves actually! I really love my gloves... my FIL bought them for me for Christmas one year and they're awesome, but I've read that some people might need 2 layers of gloves OR a mitten does better. So maybe I can get a mitten on top? you don't really need individual fingers for rowing... anyway.

I went home and decided to get in bed rather than shower since I didn't sweat at practice at ALLLLLLL and shower right before work instead. Well... this was a grand idea except I was mostly shivering in bed under my covers trying to get warm enough to sleep. :P Should've used the shower to get warm. But I did get a little before it was time to get ready. I still ended up a tiny bit late for work, but the rest of the week will be a LOT EASIER because I won't have to be at work until 1PM isntead of 10AM. And hopefully we're MOVING a lot more as the newbies learn to row more. :D so I can work up some body heat! HAHA :D

But still -- I firmly believe that you can be comfortable working out outside even if it's really cold out. Time for my snack. :D YAY! And band is tonight!

I don't like the cold much, especially we have had some really cold days this year. Like 19 degrees and then with the wind chill it feels 20 degrees lower!!!! About your feet, my best advice is to wear some cotton socks (or those fancy workout ones that wick the sweat away but cost a ton for 1 pair) under the wool socks. Wool will keep you warm, but the cotton will help and absorb any sweat that may be going on!

I have said it once and I'll say it again, I just can't take the cold the way I used to. Give me a blanket and someone beautiful (fortunately I am married to one) to snuggle with any day.

LL Bean Fitness Fleece. Nice and warm, thin, ipod pocket. I'm wearing a PINK one on my SPpage. Love'em!

Also fleece gloves with a little hoodie that turns'em into mittens. Best thing I ever did for my hands. You can open the hoodie and let your hands sweat, or cover up when it's cold.

Those are my two fashion tips du jour!

Oh yeah secksay ;-0 My sis in Idaho swears by Under Armor ColdGear and Sugoi SubZero. They are pricey but this time of year there are killer sales. I did a quick search and found tights at HDO sport for $68 and REI $45 respectivly. You could probably find something cheaper. Oh and she loves Smartwool socks. She won't wear anything else.

Me I have the exact opposite problem. Ask me about running at 115F and I can give you some opinions.

Edited for spelling the brands wrong - ugh you'd think I'd learn

Wool is definitely the way to go. Avoid cotton at all costs. Try shopping at thrift stores for wool socks, a wool sweater (men's sizes are fine), and even wool pants to put on over your running tights. You will not believe the difference wool makes.

I have wool running socks for my always cold feet - makes a WORLD of difference!

Good job layering up! I'm becoming a big fan of arm sleeves for an extra layer for the cold!!

The shower TOTALLY warms me up after a cold run! brrr

I think running tights are worth the money! I actually got mine at and REI yardsale -- for $15...they are usually $75 for the pair I got! Might be worth looking into if you have an REI close by!

Good for YOU to tackle the cold and not allow that to slow you down!

Sometimes I actually ENJOY the cold as my workouts generate so much HEAT! As in snow-shoveling, cross-country skiing, etc.

Inside layer of wool - and wool socks is really a MUST for me. Then I wear a thin layer of tech stuff and finally a wind-proof layer - seems to work well in our temperatures. Mittens feel warmer because the fingers warm eachother.

Great job in the cold, Dana. I'm like you; I have enough cold weather clothes to make do, but that's about it. I'm hating the cold more every day as winter drags on.

Thanks for another interesting blog. Enjoy the rest of your week.

    Way to tough the elements!
My advice for finding reasonably priced outdoor gear is sierratradingpost.com
Sometimes, I go to the local sports store to try on sizes then purchase on Sierra but most of the time, I just read the description of the product and that gives me a good idea of what size I should order. I ordered almost all my winter gear for running from Sierra and probably spend under $125 with shipping (long winter running shirt, socks, winter running jacket, hat, bacalava). I just ordered a new winter jacket- so excited to see what it looks like! Warning- it's an addictive website!

emoticon on getting out to exercise even in the cold and making do with the clothes you have for layering! I'm kind of glad I don't have to worry much about that since I live in a warm climate.

I also love your optimism for the rowing workouts the rest of the week!

Keep up the good work!

I've heard that silk long underwear is excellent as a base layer. Or polypro. Either might be warmer than running tights...

Thanks for the link to nuun in the previous post. I'm going to check it out!

I love the fact that you considered the padding in your sports bra a source of extra warmth! And what a classy look the outfit has!

Now that we moved up north, I've been slowly building my collection of SmartWool. It's pricey, but DANG is it worth it on a cold day. I was up in the mountains snowshoeing for like 3 hours on Saturday and (other than at lunch when I was sitting still on a snow bank) I kept perfectly warm in a single layer of midweight SmartWool and my waterproof running pants/jacket. Heck, for parts of the workout, I actually tied my jacket around my waist and pushed up the sleeves on my SmartWool top.

OMG you are rocking the winter look! I love the FSU socks (at least those look like FSU colors!). I am impressed that you are making do with what you have and braving the temps. Had it not been for my marathon, I would have bailed on exercise during the "cold" snap!

Anyway, sounds like a great rowing workout this AM and you have definitely earned the right to get back into a warm bed when you've braved the chill on the water!

Way to go on getting out there and exercising despite the cold! No excuses, yay!! I don't often exercise outdoors in the cold, but I do still hit the gym almost everyday. If it's really snowy/icy I do a dvd at home.

Love all your layers, especially the striped knee socks!
