13.78 again (with pictures)

Sunday, November 08, 2009

This time? Not gonna lie, it kinda sucked. HAHAHAHA

Actually I just put my time into mapmyrun and I was under 13min miles(my normal long run pace), closer to 12.5 but... yeah.

Here is what I think went wrong -

-I underestimated the heat
-I felt so good at the beginning I didn't stop to drink soon enough or often enough at first
-I got sooo hot and thirsty later on that I overdid it with the fluids
-I got kinda sick to my stomach feeling
-My legs felt beat.

The last item I'm not sure whether I attribute to the poorly timed fluids or the fact that the last time I ran this distance my midweek mileage was SO much less, this is the highest midweek mileage I've had thus far? Eh. Either way I embrace the runners mantra:

Some runs suck. Others are awesome. The sucky one is now over. The awesome ones are to come! :)

But I DID remember to take my camera and before the last couple miles where all my possible mistakes led to once of the worst feeling ends (no sharp pains, no injury feelings, just sooo tired and sick to my stomach) - I took a bunch of pictures!

So get ready to be bombarded with sights from my run. But first -- some numbers!

My old Brooks Addiction 7's got retired after 250.21 miles -- I was heavier when I started running in them and I used them for ALL workouts, which I think contributed to a faster decline. $/mile (based on what I paid for them) - $0.36 :D Fun feature on mapmyrun.

My Asics Gel-Kayano 13's (Take 1) have lasted me 366.75 miles - maybe should have been a little less than that, but I think I was smart about when to retire them. I bought them in June 2008, but they didn't REALLY start to get used until 2009 when I retured my old Brooks. $/mile - $0.18 :D

My newbies -- the Brooks Adrenaline 9's - SO NEW!!!! but already have 137.89 miles!!!!!! I'm really wearing down the pavement these days! :) hahahaha $/mile - $0.61 - we'll see where these babies end up by the time they're toast.

Also - this year I have run 483.95 miles -- will EASILY run over 500 miles in 2009. Earlier this year I set a goal to run 300 miles this year and 500 miles in 2010. Well! :D hahahaha. Blew this one out of the water. Not sure what I will set it for 2010 now that I've beat 500 -- I may keep it the same - plan for a fall marathon but running less the rest of the year, ya know? Still very cool.

ANYWAY!

Pictures!

We start in the river park -- at this point it is practically empty, except for the boating tailgaters who tailgate at the games in their fancy boats. :P

Across the street in this photo you can see the road I run down on my way back to the park -- note the empty pretty park:

Then I run past one of the popular RV Parking areas a little farther from campus - first on the street:

Then I get an overhead view as I cross the bridge:

Then I see a couple of runners on the trail I'll be running soon! I dunno if you can see them the way Sparks will resize the photo, but they're the speck to the left of the middle red umbrella! :)

That part of the trail is crazy -- you can see the smoke rising up in the background from Dreamland BBQ right next to that other place by the river, which is Wintzell's Oyster House. But more on that later!

I hit the side of the trail that would be to the LEFT of that bridge first -- I run under and then next to this cool train track - sometimes trains are actually on it when I'm running:

After that curve I face this gorgeous sight -- on either side of the trail with the rocks is water - so pretty:

Here's a view on my way back:

Another fun fact is that we row along the stretch of river that this trail is beside. :)

I still haven't gone down to look at this tombstone in detail to see if I can make anything out - one of these days!

Coming up on the Oyster House!!!!

This part of the trail is kinda my favorite but is also kind of strange because look to the right - gorgeous view of the river! Across the river you can see the docking area for the local old school riverboat "The Bama Belle" but it's not in dock right now:

And to the left... people eating:

It was too early for any patrons at this time, but the employees were opening up. You can see those giant window doors - the two far ones are open. And if you'll notice HOW CLOSE the trail is to the patio area as well, people are frequently eating there when I run this trail. :D

This towing company is also along the trail with their cool propeller:

Then after I run back past the restaurant I come to the beautiful little downtown Northport area -- it really feels like a main st in a quaint little town. There's a hardware store and an old fashioned toy shop, barbershop, "City Cafe", and then across the street there are art galleries and a schmancy salon where I last got my short hair do DONE.

Check out this character! HAHAHAHA I hope you can see him...

Then it's back across the bridge!!!

That is the train track bridge that I run underneath BTW. AND SEE WHAT A GORGEOUS DAY?!?!? It was like... 70 and cloudless. :)

On the other side of the river I get to run up on the Tuscaloosa News!

Then it's through the Downtown and Historic Areas -- CHECK OUT THIS MONSTER CURB I always get to run over! haha

Gorgeous Buildings/Houses:

And gorgeous fall leaves here!

At this point there were tons of people outside in their yard, parked all along the street and IN people's yards, partying it up and getting ready for the game. I felt slightly awkward trying to take any pictures in this area, because I was running RIGHT NEXT TO THEM -- but I had to take a picture of this banner -- this is a CLASSIC Alabama football cheer:

RAMMER JAMMER YELLOW HAMMER GIVE 'EM HE..ck ALABAMA! (Not sure how anxious the profanity buzzers get on here!)

Now getting closer to campus you can see all the traffic and cars parked along the side of the road -- tailgating tents, the works:

BLURRY at the end but you can see the chaos --- at this point I'm no longer running WITH the traffic, now I'm running AWAY from the stadium... after I get past the crowds and I'm near the outer parking lots I start feeling REALLLLY ragged. *ugh*

But I have one more photo for you! The view of the park after I get back to it:

This is still a full TWO HOURS before kickoff when I left the park! :D hahahaha. YAY FOOTBALL! Also we won. ;)

Man, that's a freakin' AWESOME blog. I was always too worried about my time to stop and take pics, LOL - you have inspired me to slow it down a bit and take some pics once I start doing long runs in the country again. But I have a beastie of a camera... I think I need a smaller one to lug along. ;-)

Great photos! And I love your route. Very pretty. That poor park! And, yes, higher temperatures and not enough hydration can definitely make your run suck and legs feel weak. You've got a good attitude about it.

Thanks for taking the time to share it-ALL! My favorite is the picture of the bridge over the water, picturing you running underneath it! You rock for sharing all this- seriously!
Btw, I pictures that cheer and the accent that goes with it ( one of the girls at my company is from AL) and it made me think-- do you have an Alabama accent?
Your running moto rocks...

Looks like you have some nice places to run! When not getting run over by tailgaters! LOL! I'm glad you are w0rking out what went wrong during training... there are no bad training runs... they all are a learning experience! Also, I LOVE that cost / mile feature on mapmyrun! It makes me feel soooooo much better about the ridiculous amount of money I spend on running!

I absolutely love the photographic trail of your run!! Thanks for that.

I'm stunned by the action going on in relation to the game... Here in Northern Ontario, and I think in eastern Canada in general, we don't have that kind of immense popularity to football. I could be wrong... Maybe in western Canada there's more also ... It would really be culture shock for me.

Great philosophy---get the bad runs out of the way before the marathon!

And keep in mind that hormonal issues interfere with our runs....I always run soooooo sllluuuuggggiiiisssshhhhly the week before the fun begins. It's my #1 way to know it's getting time....

Can't believe your marathon is just weeks away! Nausea is a sign of electrolyte imbalance. I hope you're practicing with whatever sports drink, gel, beans, bloks whatever that you plan on using during the marathon. You should be taking a drink of water every couple of miles and regularly using your sports item starting at 45 minutes and every 45 minutes thereafter. Also, I always carry some pretzels with me. The carbs and salt help a lot.

28 Days Until the Marathon!

Friday, November 06, 2009

To be clear -- I don't count today OR the Marathon day itself. :) That's how I do my countdowns -- I ALLLLLways wonder when other people post countdowns if they're counting the current day, if they're counting the day of the event... I count neither! :)

ANYWAY.

Today is rest day. And I've finally got my food in the tracker for today and it's looking so far so good, so woohoo on that.

Also my old Asics Gel-Kayano 13's are dust........ they are starting to cause me a bit of arch pain and I am reading the signs and saying NO to that. But as they're dying I realized how much I loved them... and I talked to my hubby and was able to order some! :D YAY! I had to SCOUR the internet to find some of that model in my size, but the good knews is that they are $50 cheaper than the newest model of Gel Kayano's (they're up to 15 now!) I like running in two different kinds of shoes... for some reason it makes me feel like my feet stay fresher from not feeling the same exact way every day? Is that weird?

I took a picture when I got home from work yesterday because my hair is GROWING OUT. And I felt cute. :)

Think I'll run from 9-12 tomorrow -- looks like good weather! :D Yay! Also the UA vs LSU game is tomorrow so there will definitely be crazy tailgating traffic and game day folks. Maybe I'll take my camera.

your haur looks great as well as you do! for me count down It depends on the time of day. So For me it is morning so I will count today but I do not count the actual day. So example to day is Saturday. My surgery is WEd. SO Right now I say four days left. Because I still have all of today. But by this after noon I will be saying three days left! I have been up dating my feed at night and then I a do not count the day we are in. So Last night I put four days left. Does tht make since. But I know hwat you mean I always wonder how people count also. My DH counts each and actual day for example if I left a dish out last night and he gets up this moring he will say it has been sitting there for two days. I always arrugue it has not even been 24 hours barely 12 hours. LOL

And I don't count the day of the event- but I do count the current day.... unless it's night- then I'd count it as a half day. So the morning before the event I'd say one day left- but that afternoon I'd say half a day left... I've wondered that about other people too :P

To me it's like a "surprise" that it comes sooner than I want it to. So in the case with your marathon, I'd tell myself that I really have like 31 days instead of the 28 you said. One month till Marathon!

Thursday, November 05, 2009

WOOHOO!

So today was a row and run day -- my rows have been soooo much lighter since I'm not racing and I'm in the boat with others who are not racing -- we just take it easy, do some drills, then row back no pressure. It's not as good of a workout, but it's just what the Dr. ordered at this point of marathon training -- a simple crosstraining workout that isn't so intense it detracts from my running.

Todays run .... I was proud of myself for accomlishing it as well as I did, let's just say that. I forgot my sunglasses AND my mp3 player!!!!!!! Today was a scheduled 7 miler, but I neglected to look at mapmyrun before I left so I ran what I knew was about a 6.55 mile run -- close enough. I averaged close to 12:30 min miles.

Then I went grocery shopping -- we needed it. I went a bit astray in the discount Halloween Candy and a bit astray with it when I got home - oops! But from now on only measured and accountable servings will be had. (Those candy corn hershey's kisses are....... amazing.) I brought with me to work some nice, whole foods. Hard boiled egg, baby carrots, apples, almonds, steel cut oats w/ vanilla whey protein powder (ok not so whole there) and cinnamon -- and I also have rice and tuna here as an alternative lunch meal or later snack. It's nice to be stocked up on the fruits and veggies again!

Then I watched ANTM and a Law and Order SVU instead of napping -- uh, I really should have taken a nap - it's hitting me now. BUT I did get to get ready for work nice and slow, blow dried my hair for the first time in AGES, plucked some unruly hairs, did my makeup for the first time in ages.. yeah. It's funny how I can get in a mode of doing doing doing and not do those simple things to take care of my appearance, ya know?

This weekend I do NOT have to work on Sunday NOR do I have to conduct music for church. Also since my run is shorter than it has been in 3 weeks, I will have a little more time on my long run day as well. Yay! So I'm looking forward to a recuperative weekend. 16 more runs before the marathon. :)

I ran into a client once during a morning jog before the hair and makeup was done and she almost didn't recognize me- haha. Then she said she felt all bad cuz she didn't have her hair done when she ran into me- I was like "hello! I don't get pretty to work out either!"

One month and counting, huh? I'm getting antsy already with tapering and race obsessing....16 days for me!!!!

And speaking of appearances, I gave into vanity and temptation and bought a SportsSkirt outfit to wear in the race! have to see if the weather cooperates enough or if I also wear tights with it, but the running skirt is comfy!

YAY for an easy weekend. My schedule has me running 20, but I'm not sure I can handle that a week after a race.

So funny about the discount candy... in years past, BF has brought home ungodly amounts of cut rate sweets... this time, he really kept it to a minimum. Some Kit Kats, some peeps, lots of candy corn and that's about it. I find candy corn to be a self regulating snack... you can only eat so much! Anyway, enjoy in moderation!

I am so glad that you can combine rowing and running and that they are complementary to each other right now. It would be so bad if you had to prepare for a regatta AND a marathon!

Is it 13 miles this Sunday? Isn't it amazing that you can knock out 6.55 miles, no problem, even sans sunglasses and mp3 player? I am so proud of you Dana - you are going to be so prepared and ready to run in another month!

Doing okie dokie.

Ran on lunch today - 4 miles, woot.

I gave myself permission to run faster on this run -- I wanted to make sure I beat the setting sun! :) And I was under 11 min miles, even including my 5 min walking warmup. WOOoOooo hoo. It's nice to know that I'm not just SLOW just cause I've been doing as my training plan told me and taking everything at an easy pace. I think it is good for me to push it every now and again even though I'm not officially doing any REAL speed work.

I've been running past the same homeless person for the past couple of weeks at least though on this route... I don't feel threatened, but it is kinda odd. I rarely come across a homeless person in this city -- anyway. He has apparently taken to camping out in the parking lot at one end of this trail I frequent. Should I call someone about him?? I think the first or second time I saw him was that time I ran in the rain not too long ago. It was the second time because the first time he was sleeping in his pile of stuff when I first ran past that area and when I came back he was getting up out of it and I was like OH! There is a person there! Then he was just standing with his umbrella the day it was raining.

Just not sure what to do about that, if anything.

Yesterday my stomach felt better after I ate my snack -- I had some oatmeal instead of my lighter planned snack. I'm pretty sure I was just underfueled, because I ran 7miles in the heat and had eaten less than normal for breakfast and forgot my Gu -- normally I'll do one for that distance.

So yay for that! (well, feeling better, not for being a dope and not eating enough)

I guess that's about it for now. Tomorrow is 11/5 - marathon 12/5. 17 more runs between now and the big day. :)

Good to hear you had a good run. I work with the homeless population (mentally ill and addicted homeless). They are more resourceful than many give them credit for. Many want to be left alone. You might try smiling or nodding your head as you run by and see how he responds. If you have some kind of emergency responders in your area, you might give them a call and let them know.

I suggest contacted The United Way for the homeless guy. When I lived in WA state there were LOTS of them and this organization was the best at helping them out. Also, I do know for a fact that the Salvation Army here has a shelter - they may be another good agency to contact about him.

And WAY TO GO once again! Awesome!

Over here there is a lot of homeless people. But there are also organizations that are willing to help. I would def. look into some and see what they can do. If you feel threatened, you can call the cops but to be honest they don't do nothing but make the person move on. Just let DH & friends/co workers know when you are going on these runs so they can look at for you. Hopefully this person can get some help they may need.

Keep on running!

Homeless dude, being that I live in the homeless capitol of the world (seems that way at least), my advise...tell your pastor, not the cops. Your pastor can either check on him, or pass the info on to the right agency. The cops MIGHT simply harrass him...granted they might not, but...he needs assistance and understanding, not grief.

WOO HOO on your speed run!!! I need to start doing fartleks again!!!

I loved that feeling of being able to and wanting to press harder on the short runs as my endurance advanced. WTG! You have received some good tidbits on the homeless guy. I would not call the cops. Just be aware. There is a homeless couple that lives under the bridge that I run over and back on...I do not run on the side where they are 'just in case'.

Not sure what to do for the homeless person. I would venture that there has to be some organization that can help.

He may refuse the help though.

Sounds like a good run. Keep it going!!!

Great to hear that you're feeling okay!

Here's a thought about this likely homeless fellow: there is every possibility that he is already aware of his options in your community, but *just in case* either look up shelters & services for the homeless in your area, print them out on a sheet of paper and the next time you see him just step up and say, 'hey, in case you didn't know, there is help if you don't have a place to live,' give him the paper and wish him well.

Homeless dude - give your DH a really good description of him, just in case. Call the police (non-emergency line) to let them know he is there and you are concerned about him.

About your 11 minute miles - GO SPEED RACER, GO SPEED RACER, GO SPEED RACER, GO!

Wish I could run under 11 miles. Keep up the good work.

I would mention the homeless person to someone who might be able to provide some help. Don't take your personal safety for granted. If you're running where he's located, you should make it a point to mention that you're running there to give a heads up to your family and friends. Better safe than sorry.

That's a tough one sweetie....so many times they don't want help. Maybe call one of the shelters and see if they have an outreach program and they can see if he wants any help....otherwise just pray. That's what I do for all the homeless people....so glad you're feeling better and under an 11 minute mile???? W00t!!!! That is so freaking awesome!!!!!

Under 11 minute miles! that does deserve a woohoo!
I don't know what to tell you about the homeless guy- most likely if you call anyone they'll just come tell him to leave and he'll have to find another place to stay. we don't have many here either- when i do see them it's usually on the side of the road they're traveling. confession- i keep cliff bars in my purse to give them when i pass, everyone needs to eat.
I would say steer clear- even if he seems harmless, you never know

Get it together, stomach!

Tuesday, November 03, 2009

My stupid stomach just feels... Wonky. I hate it.

It's not like I really feel SICK, I just don't feel RIGHT.

BLERGH.

But I DID have a really good 7miler before work. :) It was kinda HOT! actually. But good.

Looking at my calendar, I have 18 runs between now and the marathon.

Today we went and did the paperwork for our sublease -- we actually already have our keys and everything. :) I'm feeling SO happy that we've gotten that arranged and taken care of already. Now we just have to get the storage unit situation taken care of, and PACK.

I use the word "wonky" all the time. Do you say "wrangy", too? As in, "I'm feeling wrangy like an orangutan, so I'd better clean the bathroom or go for a run." Congrats on the new place. I hope its either in a safer neighbourhood or that you'll be allowed to have a dog. Congrats on running even when you felt "off".

Sorry for the wonky stomach...(and I had to smile because my girls use the phrase "poinky" when they get a snagged fingernail, and an extreme snag is known as a "wonky poinky" in our house. hee hee hee)

There's been all kinds of illness going around lately, and who has time for that?

My Zumba shoes did not unfortunately give me added grace-you know, instantly transform me into a contender for So You Think You Can Dance or anything, and the one foot kind of hurt a little, but I think that's just because my feet aren't used to having proper arches when doing the class. Gotta break 'em in, and I think they'll be great!
