Feeling much better...

Tuesday, June 16, 2009

... after having a nice ON POINT day yesterday.

Even though this morning I had to miss the 2miler.

I found out after posting yesterday that I had to come into work 2 hours earlier than usual, and I also decided I needed to go grocery shopping this morning. SO!

I actually did the rowing, then rowing machine, then Upper and Lower Body ST... and to be honest I was feeling pretty wiped so I didn't mind that I ran out of time for my run after getting groceries and whatnot.

Tomorrow I have to go REtest my blood glucose for the Walking Study. I think he said my result was actually too LOW? I'm going to ask about it in more detail when I go in tomorrow morning, but it was off by .9 of a point from what the sponsor was requiring for participation.

Then it's a 4mile run and Pilates on the Ball!

I tell you what -- my HAMSTRINGS are totally feeling this rowing and whatnot. You don't really realize this from watching I guess because mostly what you SEE when watching rowing are the arms, but really it's the legs and the core that do most of the work. As a matter of fact I'd rank it 1. legs, 2. core, 3. arms. Your arms mostly stay straight during the stroke and are a stable frame for the rest of your body to work the oar.

I guess that's it for now. :)

Thanks for the comments on the blog...Ive been known to eat 4 protein bars in a day...for no reason. Clif bars are so good!
My running is going alright...when Im doing it, I just dont think about it. Then eventually, it's 4 miles done!

Where did I miss this info on the walking study? What is up with that?

That sounds like a really busy/productive morning! Suddenly I feel very slug-like :P. Better get to the gym!

I have to disagree with Pam. I've been hypoglycemic my whole life and if there's one thing I know - low blood sugar and carbs don't mix. If blood sugar is too low and you eat carbs you will feel better momentarily, but within a couple of hours you'll crash and the cycle can start over again. The best thing to do for low blood sugar is always make sure you have some protein. Protein doesn't give you the immediate jolt that carbs would, but instead it BALANCES your blood sugar. It might be just enough to get you in the range where you need to be. (and endurance athletes may be popping glucose tablets, but that doesn't mean it's SMART).

If you are burning a lot of energy with your workouts, mild hypoglycemia is possible. That's why endurance athletes pop glucose tablets and gels. Have a carb-based snack before your next blood test, a glass of milk or some fruit or both, and you should be fine. If not, it may suggest hypoglycemia which can be managed with more frequent snacks especially when you are exercising. My hubby is a type 1 diabetic and sometimes gets hypoglycemic from not eating enough while at his physically-demanding job; this was true for him even before his diagnosis.

You had a great workout today! nothing wrong with working those Hamstrings! us runners don't work on those hammy's enough. I think the majority of runner injuries come in the hmstring department. they don't get strenghthened like all the other legs muscles do when all we do is run. good luck to you! Have a good day...

Friday was ok. A little splurgey but not too bad. (Also the concert was AMAZING -- Ted Leo + The Pharmacists = heaven. At The Bottletree I had a burrito w/ vegan chili, cheese and rice, side of tortilla chips w/ guac and salsa. So good.)

Saturday was total nonsense. :D After my race I made full use of all of the free food and it was ridiculous. Then I went swimming and ate a ton of chips and salt free pretzels and a sub (which was all veggie and not too bad for a sub but still... white bread roll ugh). THEN that night I went to a birthday party and ate wayyyyy too much dessert. :P wah wah.

Then Sunday -- I ate well. Except for the FOUR PROTEIN BARS. I bought them on the spur of the moment at WalMart to taste test the brand and ... I ate all of them. In addition to what would amount to a normal calorie day. Yeah. Not good.

(Ok the bars were DELICIOUS in case anyone's wondering they were Pure Protein brand! -- all under 200cal and 19-20g of protein each 2-3g of sugar, although they do use sugar alcohols.)

That said, I AM happy with my level of activity this weekend with the race and the rowing on Sunday - I just really need to make sure I'm not losing focus on my eating when the weekend rolls around.

This weekend I will face a challenging eating day on Saturday because I'm driving to and from Atlanta that day to go through the temple with my brother before he goes on his mission. I will eat wherever and whatever my family eats. Just gotta plan to make the best decisions I can except for ONE splurge meal. Also I will plan some healthy snacks for the road.

NO EXCUSES THE REST OF THE WEEKEND. Friday - on point. Sunday -- I'll be hosting healthy meal night so I gotta make sure I make it good. :) hehehe. TRACK EVERYTHING FRIDAY AND SUNDAY.

I haven't weighed myself in a while. Last week I was starting to feel really slim again -- my sides were firming up again and I felt great. The weekend has pretty much undone that feeling -- so I'm going to wait until later in the week to check in with the scale. :P

Rowing club has made boat and lineup assignments for the summer up until the new learn to row camp. The thing is we have enough people to fill 3 boats and we can only take out two 8boats (because that's what we have -- and two coaches anyway...) So not everyone gets to row two times each week -- we're on kind of a rotation. HOWEVER -- I'm going to sub for someone in another boat tomorrow so I will still get to row twice this week.

My workout plan for this week:

Today: OFF. Did nothing
Tues: Rowing, erg at the Aquatic Center unless no one can go with me, upper and lower body ST, and a 2 miler
Wed: 4 mile run, Pilates on the Ball
Thu: Rowing, 3 mile run
Fri: Erg at the AqC, ST
Sat/Sun 2 miler and 5 miler - the day will depend on when I get back from ATL. If I have enough time I'll do the 5 miler Saturday, if not either a 2 miler or off and 5 miler on Sunday.

There's also an optional open row again on Sunday, but I think I might opt out this particular weekend.

Have a good and safe trip to ATL! I'll have to check out those bars you "taste" tested ;) hehe.. I'm hooked on one made by Stinger, the peanut butter one :) :) To die for! It's their heartier bar, not the ones you can find at Walmart/Target. I found these at REI. It's higher in calories, but it "tastes" JUST LIKE a peanut butter meltaway! I swear!! Try it if you ever run across it. 20g protein and they're made with honey, so no sugar alcohols..

You've been doing a lot of exercising. That, in and of itself can lead to hunger. You'll do fine getting back on track with eating the right things. Thanks for the tip on the brand of protein bar you tried. Hubby and I have tried several, too, and our fave is "Extreme Protein 32"; we buy it at a Canadian drug store, though.

Great job, as always, being accountable to yourself. That's the most important thing, right? You don't have to be perfect--just honest and always looking for the space to improve to help you meet your goals. You're definitely always doing that, and it's a great example! :-)

My weekend was out of control too. The summer is always worse with all the social time excuses. I too am feeling like all the good I was feeling at the end of the week was completely undone by one stupid day. Grr... I'm sure your ambitious routine will get you back there in no time though!

Good luck, especially with the upcoming family time. Sounds like you're ready to face it head on though! :-)

Thankfully I came in at 1551, so it wasn't horrid, but still! I can totally relate to just losing that good feeling (you are what you eat, indeed!) Have a strong, kick butt week!

I met my goal of a sub-30min 5K!!! :D

I came in at just about 29:50, which if I calculated it right is like a 9:37 min mile!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Me and LAFTERSFREE (It was her first 5K!):

LAFTERSFREE (and her co-worker) coming in to her first ever 5K finish!!!

And yes, that is my SparkPeople technical shirt! And it did rain. But not mostly while I was running -- it just started when I came in.

I can't wait to see the official times and any photos! They DID have a photographer at the finish and I wanna see my super intense sprint to the finish line cause I was focused!!! As I first saw it it said like... 29:30something so it really helped push me to get that final kick! :)

I didn't get to sleep until 3AM last night after the concert and the course was... kinda weird. I honestly did not expect to reach my sub-30 goal today, so I am REALLY jazzed with those results!!!! :D WOOHOO!!!

My fish died! :(

Thursday, June 11, 2009

So sad. Last night I went to feed him and I noticed there was still food on top of the water... and I didn't see my fish!!!! The water was slightly cloudy, but I STILL should have been able to see him moving around.

I picked up the bowl (cause it has a blue stand and background and he's blue so it's sometimes hard to see him) and he was laying at the bottom with the rocks.. SOMETIMES he hangs out like that -- but after picking up the bowl and moving it around he wasn't moving and oh man, so sad. :(

We had him for like... 3 years. Which apparently is the typical life span for a betta (2-3 years). WE LOVED YOU, ARTURO!!!!!!!!!

So now we have no doggie AND no fishie. :(

*sigh* I think it was so sad that we didn't notice he was dead after he apparently didn't eat last night either. :( wah.

Anyway -- this morning I slept in -- LOVELY. And ran for two miles. I didn't chill my pace as much as I intended to, apparently...still ended up at like 12min miles I think it was. I ran without music and it was super hot so I think I was getting anxious for it to be over. Plus I didn't have a concrete number staring me in the face telling me to slow down. HAHAHA But still. I'm aiming for 10min miles on Saturday, so that's a good 2 min per mile slower than my goal pace so it was still a pretty relaxed run. I just know I can go slower. HAHAHA

My abs are sore from erging yesterday so I did not do any abwork today like I intended.

Tomorrow I'm taking off of work because we're going to a concert that night and I'd have to leave early. Since someone's covering my night shift I figured it'd be a great opportunity to take the WHOLE DAY off. :) I'm looking forward to it. I'm thinking I'll definitely hit up the AqC and do some erging and ST. Then that night it's Ted Leo and the Pharmacists! WOOHOO!!!

I almost always run to Ted Leo. :) I hope they stick around and chat because I would love to tell him that I run to his music. hahaha. Then in the morning it's the 5K!!! :D I will be arriving early to register. I'm pretty pumped! Then probably hanging out with LAFTERSFREE who is participating in her FIRST 5K with this race! WOOHOO! and swimming. :) Later that night there is a Rowing Club member having a birthday BBQ - bring your own MEAT.

Sunday - church and rowing and healthy meal night.

So another packed weekend -- another reason I'm very happy to be taking tomorrow OFF.

I have heard about Ted Leo for awhile now, are they similar to like Spoon?? We have a couple of shows coming up Sonic Youth, which I am really excited about and The Black Moth Super Rainbow. Have you heard Passion Pit? I just downloaded their album from I tunes, I haven't had a chance to check it out yet.     emoticonsorry to hear of the loss of your beta. It's amazing how pets can be like part of the family. We had a beta like that too, they are cool little creatures.

First I just want to say thank you for letting me know about adding nutrients to my tracker, although I seem to be having some techical glitches getting them all in there. Oh well. A few at a time. Also, thanks for letting me know you're "unreasonably proud" of me - that's cool - I love the support, of course. Sorry about your fishie and I'm still sorry about Roscoe..

I'm jealous that you get a three-day weekend! You have way more weekend plans than I do. Have a great race on Saturday!!

My condolences on your loss. I bawled when the racoons got at our chicken (and only hurt her) and then when the feral cat who adopted us turned up missing we were both sad for days (maybe it was that coyote I saw the other day! Anyway, I know how the loss of a pet can hurt.

But great work on your run! I bet you get that sub-30:00 5K on Saturday. It will be earlier than today's run, and therefore cooler, right?

I'm so sorry about Arturo. We had a similar scare today when we thought our frog, French Fry, was gone. Turns out he was just being lazy. But we sure got sad about it when he wouldn't move! My condolences to you and hubby.

Great job on the running - I don't know if I could run w/o music. did you do that cuz you have to for the run?

Um, yeah. I was hoping Chicago or Milwaukee - but Ohio is at least drivable! I would love to go! But if you're not going to be there, I don't want to go. Humpf.
