I met my goal of a sub-30min 5K!!! :D

I came in at just about 29:50, which if I calculated it right is like a 9:37 min mile!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And yes, that is my SparkPeople technical shirt! And it did rain. But not mostly while I was running -- it just started when I came in.

I can't wait to see the official times and any photos! They DID have a photographer at the finish and I wanna see my super intense sprint to the finish line cause I was focused!!! As I first saw it it said like... 29:30something so it really helped push me to get that final kick! :)

I didn't get to sleep until 3AM last night after the concert and the course was... kinda weird. I honestly did not expect to reach my sub-30 goal today, so I am REALLY jazzed with those results!!!! :D WOOHOO!!!

My fish died! :(

So sad. Last night I went to feed him and I noticed there was still food on top of the water... and I didn't see my fish!!!! The water was slightly cloudy, but I STILL should have been able to see him moving around.

I picked up the bowl (cause it has a blue stand and background and he's blue so it's sometimes hard to see him) and he was laying at the bottom with the rocks.. SOMETIMES he hangs out like that -- but after picking up the bowl and moving it around he wasn't moving and oh man, so sad. :(

We had him for like... 3 years. Which apparently is the typical life span for a betta (2-3 years). WE LOVED YOU, ARTURO!!!!!!!!!

So now we have no doggie AND no fishie. :(

*sigh* I think it was so sad that we didn't notice he was dead after he apparently didn't eat last night either. :( wah.

Anyway -- this morning I slept in -- LOVELY. And ran for two miles. I didn't chill my pace as much as I intended to, apparently...still ended up at like 12min miles I think it was. I ran without music and it was super hot so I think I was getting anxious for it to be over. Plus I didn't have a concrete number staring me in the face telling me to slow down. HAHAHA But still. I'm aiming for 10min miles on Saturday, so that's a good 2 min per mile slower than my goal pace so it was still a pretty relaxed run. I just know I can go slower. HAHAHA

My abs are sore from erging yesterday so I did not do any abwork today like I intended.

Tomorrow I'm taking off of work because we're going to a concert that night and I'd have to leave early. Since someone's covering my night shift I figured it'd be a great opportunity to take the WHOLE DAY off. :) I'm looking forward to it. I'm thinking I'll definitely hit up the AqC and do some erging and ST. Then that night it's Ted Leo and the Pharmacists! WOOHOO!!!

I almost always run to Ted Leo. :) I hope they stick around and chat because I would love to tell him that I run to his music. hahaha. Then in the morning it's the 5K!!! :D I will be arriving early to register. I'm pretty pumped! Then probably hanging out with LAFTERSFREE who is participating in her FIRST 5K with this race! WOOHOO! and swimming. :) Later that night there is a Rowing Club member having a birthday BBQ - bring your own MEAT.

Sunday - church and rowing and healthy meal night.

So another packed weekend -- another reason I'm very happy to be taking tomorrow OFF.

    What in the heck is erging????

I have heard about Ted Leo for awhile now, are they similar to like Spoon?? We have a couple of shows coming up Sonic Youth, which I am really excited about and The Black Moth Super Rainbow. Have you heard Passion Pit? I just downloaded their album from I tunes, I haven't had a chance to check it out yet. This summer I am going to make a mixed CD of cardio music for a few of my spark friends that I feel like have similar taste.

i'm fish sitting at work - my coworker's father is dying and he went to see him before he dies and left ME in charge of fish-sitting.

i'm terrified the fish will die and he will come back to work and that will just be too much for him to bear.)

    My condolences on your loss. I bawled when the racoons got at our chicken (and only hurt her) and then when the feral cat who adopted us turned up missing we were both sad for days (maybe it was that coyote I saw the other day! Anyway, I know how the loss of a pet can hurt.

But great work on your run! I bet you get that sub-30:00 5K on Saturday. It will be earlier than today's run, and therefore cooler, right?

    I'm so sorry about Arturo. We had a similar scare today when we thought our frog, French Fry, was gone. Turns out he was just being lazy. But we sure got sad about it when he wouldn't move! My condolences to you and hubby.

Found the book!

Yeah... the book I lost that I last remembered reading in bed? Was in bed. HAHAHAHAHAHA

I looked there!!!!!!! I PROMISE!!!!!!!!!! But then last night I lifted a sheet on my hubby's side of the bed and there it was. *phwew*

Anyway -- this morning I got up and headed to the Aquatic Center to meet Rowing Club members for an erg session. That was great! :D Then I did upper and lower body ST in the AC weight room -- which, btw, has a small cardio room as well!!!! If continuing rowing in the fall is something that becomes important for me, I may want to consider keeping this same little set up going. I'd have access to a treadmill if I wanted it for running purposes, and a weight room... so...? No classes. :P We'll see.

I ate an apple to start the day, then when I got home from the workout session I made a smoothie up! :)

I looked at some examples and then just experimented with a variation using the ingredients I had -- and VOILA! The Tofu Protein Strawberry Banana Smoothie was born!!! It was creamy and thick and delicious. I shared it on SP Recipes if anyone is interested. The totals were 243 cal, 4g fat, 31g carbs and 26g protein...


3oz Lite Silken Firm Tofu
1 cup Light Vanilla Soymilk (Silk)
1/2 scoop Vanilla Whey Protein Powder
1 cup frozen strawberry/banana mix.


After that I took a nap. Then I packed my lunch+snacks for work, which I'm really looking forward to.

Lunch will consist of:

1 flatout wrap with: 42g romaine, 3oz cooked chicken, 1 laughing cow cheese wedge, and some amazing salsa.
Cottage Cheese w/ Blueberries
Baby Carrots

Snacks: 1 - THE MOST AMAZING YOGURT (Stonyfield Organic Fat Free Probiotic Strawberry), 1/2 oz Blue Diamond Sea Salt Almonds

2 - 1/2 oz same almonds and a pack of salmon (2.5oz)

Before leaving for work I enjoyed my old FAVORITE - pretzel sticks w/ natural PB, and also had some popcorn.

Tonight for dinner I planned some eye of round marinated in a Spicy Ginger sauce, couscous, and Green Giant Healthy Digestion Veggies.

Also I've planned in the previously denied frozen yogurt parfait. ;)

I am LOVING the food options today, so since that's what I'm excited about right now -- I HAD to share. :) I'm over 1-2g in carbs/fat/protein with these foods, and 15cal under in my calorie range -- weird. But since the calories fit and everything is perfectly balanced I'm calling this menu plan for today a smashing success!!!!

In reviewing my detailed totals my saturated fat said 30g!!! WHAAAT?! So I looked at the details and some joker who entered the Flatout wrap has total fat of 2g, saturated fat - EIGHTEEN GRAMS. HAHAHAHAHA yeah right. So I'm actually fine in that category.

So I opted not to run today -- since I found out I'm running a 5K race this weekend and I REALLY want to PR!!!!! I'm trying to take it easy the rest of the week. I plan to run an easy 2 miler tomorrow, chill chill chill pace, and then KILL it on Saturday!!! and then easyeasy run on Sunday as well.

    How far ahead of time do you think I should rest up before I do the 5K? Mine is on a Sunday morning. Hubby thinks take off thursday and friday, but I don't know. I don't workout on saturdays so that's a 3 day wait until getting some movement in. I know how sluggish I feel on monday mornings - don't want to feel sluggish at my run!

    Wow, Dana, are you sure someone didn't slip some caffeine in that smoothie? I am picturing you bouncing off walls as you write this. :) Haha. I wish I had that kind of energy on a Wednesday afternoon.

Frozen strawberry/banana mix would be my dream smoothie ingredient. Frozen strawberries are easy to find but with bananas I always have to calculate exactly how many yellow ones I should buy for early in the week and then greener ones for later in the week so I'll always have a ripe one for my smoothies...such a hassle, but banana makes smoothies have the perfect texture.

Where do you see fat broken down into different types? I didn't know you could look at saturated fat totals separate from overall fat totals!

Hey, a 5K this weekend! Yay - can't wait to hear how it goes. :) There is a very very slight chance I might be in one too - with my mom - but she probably will decide against it and I'm not doing it without her. The one where I want to PR is in 2.5 weeks - this one would just be for some family bonding. :)

Not SO much on the workout front -- but I almost skipped my run and DIDN'T so I'm VERY happy about that. :)

Today I went to meet the Walking Study peeps -- got to see the probe and it looks very unoffensive and should not be a problem at all.

Blood sugar, fine, Blood pressure -- he had to try to take it like 5 times. Apparently I have a very hard to hear pulse??? Anyway it was eventually like... 114/78 I think? Then they weighed and measured me and...

ONLY 6'1"?!? I'm REALLY not sure if that's right though... because their scale and measuring stick were kinda weird... the measuring stick FELL OFF the scale before I got measured... ? I will have to measure at home to make sure. But oh well, if that's true, who knew? It's just an inch and one measure or the other was wrong, no biggie.

Then it was body fat time!!!!! So by the calipers I measured....

24%. ;) HEHEHEHE. So ok, apparently the parts of my body that get measured by pinching are athletic and fit, it's the other parts that need to get with the program so that my overall measurement can come down. I really do believe the accuracy of the BOD POD, because I know if she had pinched that inch in the middle of the front of my stomach above my belly button, or say the upper inner thigh instead of the front of my quad... yeah. But I guess seeing that number helped me feel better in a way -- like ok, so I guess that's why I thought my BF% would be lower, because parts of my body ARE a lot lower. Just those odd bulgey areas are bringing me down!!!

I THINK my weight was like...172ish. Which from 170 the other day after a good night sleep, for today after little sleep and TOM arriving tomorrow... I believe. UM, but I'm guessing using calculations from what I remember of her doing my kg measurement. When she weighed me using lbs... it said 160. I think she might've had the large counterbalance in the wrong spot, but I saw her try it over and over and it was the same. So either I'm remembering the kg wrong or something was wayyyy off with that scale.

But I do think the BF% was a good measure, she REALLY knew what she was doing with that equipment and we discussed my results, etc., I just think that scale was... weird.

ANYWAY -- then I went to the Aquatic Center, bought my measurement, looked for SARAHISKIDA, but I was late to meet her and she wasn't there (turns out she didn't go, but I was like... 20-30 min later to meet her so hahaha), so I just looked around and left. Went GROCERY SHOPPING and MAILED MY HRM!!!

And scheduled for today was a 5 mile run and ST??? I was just not feeling that.

I came home and put away groceries and headed straight out to do a 2 miler. I figured I could fit that in and trade my run tomorrow (which was supposed to be 2 miles) for today's 5 miler. Tomorrow I'm erging WITH rowing people at 6:30AM so I will be up and ready to run nice and early, PLENTY of time to run 5 miles.

So I got my run done, and then started cooking meat.

I cooked 2lbs of chicken and 4oz of steak (eye of round or something? it's lean). I packaged half of the chicken and all of the steak into little baggies of cut up 4ozraw/3oz cooked servings. :D I didn't have time to package the other chicken, but it's cooked as well. I AM SOOOOOOOOO SET. :) I'm sure will may use some of that chicken for dinner this week at some point, but I also stocked up on more meat that's in the freezer. WOOT.

So I am really working to get that goal of eating cleaner with my protein choices.

I also picked up a bag of frozen straberries/banana slices MIXED to use for smoothies. WOOT.

But I was so busy this morning -- little time to do ANYTHING else fitness wise than the 2 mile run, and I BOOKED IT on that run. I started out slow to warm up, but then just kept turning up the juice as I went and finished with a sprint. Average pace ended up under 11min mile, so that was nice. :)

But no HRM. :P So I'm using the mapmyrun estimate. (Which I think has historically been lower than what my HRM tells me, so I guess we're doing extra credit?)

AND TONIGHT I WILL DO LOWER BODY/ABS/BOTH ST. WILL. DO. IT. And tomorrow I'll do whatever I didn't do tonight. (And if I do both I'll do upper body tomorrow.)

OK. It's time to eat.

OH. :( I lost my book... dangit... I have no idea where it is. :( I was reading the fourth book in the Otherland series by ... Tad Williams? Something like that. Anyway it was so good and I have NO IDEA where it is. I thought I was reading it last night in bed... but now I can't find it. ?

    I know what you mean about eating cleaner with protein choices. I really need to do what you just did - cook up some chicken and steak and have it all ready to go.

BTW - what do you use in your smoothies? Are you using a protein powder? I keep wanting to make a smoothie after my workout but they always seem to be high in calories. I use Designer Whey powder. Any smoothie secrets you want to share? (I'm so needy, hey? Always asking you questions... lol)

    Kudos for you for getting that run it. It seems like you had a busy day to me anyway, so glad you didn't get lazy. I never thought about BF % being different all over your body but it makes total sense now!!!!!! Glad it made you feel better even with TOM around, I know how emotional one thing can get with TOM.

And thanks for the comment on my blog. I know eating that apple was right instead of going out to buy a scone but to be honest, i was dreaming of one at work. lol And eating that darn cake messed up my eating schedule, I wasn't hungry for lunch, just ate a little veggies to have something in my system. I got home at 7pm and ate a HUGE DINNER without even realizing it. 660 cals..ugghhh I am all off. I am in my calories for the day, but I am about to workout sO only lean protein when I am done. I HATE, HATE, HATE that!! Now I feel like I need to sit on this heavy tummy..GRRRR

    Hmm, you just gave me a realization - up until now I was thinking of body fat percentage as just one number, but it makes total sense that the number would have to vary depending on what part of the body you're talking about! I KNOW my upper half is leaner than my bottom half, sigh...heh.

    i think the scale was wrong too, she said i was "barely 5'2"... ummm i thought i was "barely 5'3" and to me, thats a HUGE difference. but yeah that scale was kinda wacked, but it showed me at 179, and yesterday morning i was 177. My BF% was 38.6. so, sad, but not worthy of crying over i guess. but the girl who took the measurements, is the old water aerobics/kickboxing instructor and i LOVE her!!! she's really sweet, and positive and always helpful. well im at work and i actually have to "work" so i will catch up w/ u later!!! glad u had such a productive day!

    Your blogs always make me laugh. "The measuring stick FELL OFF the scale..."hilarious. I also cooked a ton of chicken today. I had to get ready for my work week, so that I have no excuses. Under an 11 minute mile is awesome!

Tad Williams. I have a book here by him. Its about cats. Hmmm... (*Googling*) its called Tailchaser's Song. I know I didn't finish it. I don't know why not. Maybe I lost it? The part I read, several years ago, was good. The cats all had really cool names. (I like giving my kittens cool names, too). I may have to dust that book off - assuming its been found and is back on myshelf. I hope you find yours.
