Folks... I am hurting today.


I wasn't sore yesterday until later last night -- the soreness from the JM Video started kicking in.

Then this morning was Rowing Camp AND a a 3.59mile run.


I thought today's run was supposed to be 3miles and that I did more accidentally, but it was supposed to be 4 miles now that I look at my schedule so.... I guess I did closer to what I was supposed to??? :D hahaha.

Today Rowing Camp was cool because we added more of our body into the stroke and finally got to a FULLLLL ROWING STROKE! YAY!!!!!!!! I got to be one of those super cool rowing people and sliding on my little slidey seat and whatnot!

The ONE down side to this whole experience is the incredibly SLOW person in my boat that is driving me absolutely insane. This sounds so bad but I really hope they don't continue on this summer... but if they do I may have to speak to the coach about not being in the same boat. They just aren't picking up anywhere near the same pace as anyone else, and are just ambivalent about things sometimes in a very bizarre way... maybe it's the age difference. *sigh* But I hate it MOST because it makes me feel like a JERK!!!!!!!!!! hahahaha

I guess I'm just impatient.

But aside from that, today was AWESOME.

Our coach said that a membership to the Aquatic Center was only $30 for the summer, too!!! I checked the website and it says different, but it also has some other outdated information so I'm hoping that's wrong... I need to call and find out. If that's the case I will have access to a WEIGHT ROOM and erg machines!!! This would seriously alter my workout plan I think... but I think for the better!!!

But it was also just so gorgeous out this morning -- it really is nice to be out there on the water with the sun coming up. :)

    It's such a pain when everyone is really giving their all and one person is dragging. I have to admit, in group activities I tend to be the one dragging... though I don't plan on being that one ever again, believe me I know how annoying it is for everyone. Though I would do it while trying to inspire myself to really get into it while being in a bad place mentally so it just wasn't happening.

    I love that you're annoyed by someone in your boat already... it's kind of inevitable. For me it's the girl who says 'that wasn't very hard, we should do something else' when everyone else has been pushing their guts out!

I coached a boat a few months ago where this one girl kept. taking. her. hands. off. the. blade. mid. stroke. It was mental. *breathe* !

    Hahaha...everytime I look over at your boat, she's spacing out or something. I generally like the people on my boat, although I'm the only newbie in the bow seats so I really have to work to keep up with everyone and keep good form. And, if I can complain for just a second, the stern seats--while very strong--are not the best at holding the set, so it makes it a little challenging. Everytime I look up, at least one person has their oar in the air. Other than that, I'm really enjoying it!

Social Food Situations :P

Just wanted to :P to the Social Food Situations that come up.

I had one today and I totally caved to it -- I could have not partaken at all, but I did. I AM however, proud of how I partook in it and kept my portion sizes very small and did not overeat. WOOT.

But yeah one of my bosses' last day is tomorrow because he's being deployed AGAIN. (When I first started this job he was away and came back a few months after I started... I've worked here about 3 years.) So we planned a little going away thingie for him -- I volunteered to bring the FRUIT! :) But there was also lasagna, salad, hawaiian sweet rolls (a favorite of mine) and CAKE. But my piece of cake was nice and tiny thanks to the pre-cutting skills of the lady who brought it. YAY. :) I'm totally guessing on the lasagna -- I don't really understand how the tracker had it so I just went with some of both and I'm hoping it's close to accurate.


This morning was -- ROWING ON THE WATER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So we got to help put the launch into the water (the boat w/ the motor that the coach sits in), then move our actual boats out and down to the dock -- there is of course, a special way that this is done. Then we looked at the boats again briefly, our coach showed us how to get in. We put our oars in and then GOT IN THE BOATS. WOOOOHOOO!!!!!!

Most of our time spent in the water was kind of drifting, practicing "setting" the boat -- gaining balance in the water by the position of our oars while not rowing. We practiced a BIT of upper body only rowing. So I did actually get to set my oar in the water and push some water! hahaha :D But not very much.

This morning our post meetup email said that she'd be sending out another email soon with adjusted lineups -- I hope this means that some of us newbies were so ROCKIN she wants to put us together in a boat so we can get moving faster. And if that's true I hope I'm one of the rockin ones. HAHAHA.

Well -- I gotta look up some recipes and figure out what delicious meal will work for my remaining ranges tonight, and now here are the promised additional photos from the balloon race. :)

This balloon was the "hare" for the race -- it took off first. :)

The group that hosted this event is a private, not-for-profit organization that's mission statement is "to provide people with developmental disabilities the assistance and support necessary to enable them to live valued lives in the community."

This balloon was cool because of those quilted little poofy ships on the side. :) hehe

There were over 30 balloons participating in the race -- it was REALLY cool... and in the bottom of that last picture you can kinda see the biggest baddest balloon of them all.

So you may have noticed my bunny ears in that other picture -- that's because the ENERGIZER BUNNY balloon was there and their crew were handing out bunny ears, which I had to get of course. ;) hahaha.

(My DH loved taking that picture -- hahahaha)

You can see this was the last balloon to take off and by quite a bit, too. :) haha. But it was cool enough that it didn't matter.

I guess that's it for now. :)

OH!!!!! My brother got his mission call and he's going to the Colorado Denver North mission, which apparently includes part of Wyoming and Nebraska as well. In my church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) the young men typically will serve a 2 year mission starting when they are 19. The ladies sometimes serve missions as well, although that is less typical, but if they leave they go when they are 21. WELL!!! My oldest little brother just returned from his mission - the Canada Calgary mission. My sister is currently in the Mongolia Ulaanbaatar mission (JUST sent her a package), and now my brother is going to Colorado. The funny thing is that my brother reports to the Missionary Training Center on 7/29 and my sister is returning on 8/17 -- they will JUST miss each other. aww. :) I CAN'T WAIT FOR MY SISTER TO COME HOME!!!!!

OH! AND THERE'S MORE I forgot to write about -- I did the JM No More Trouble Zones DVD today for the first time in AGES. I realllly need to get back on the ST ball. With the whole rowing thing going on I got thrown off and I didn't do any last week. :P (Except lifting boxes and stuff moving on Saturday.)

Wed - Pilates
Fri - another JM video.

I definitely want to do the NMTZ video once a week at least -- it is a tough push and I think it really covers EVERYTHING. I also want to make sure I don't stop doing pilates, and get another full body workout in once a week.
So full plan after Rowing Camp will look like this:

Tue: Rowing+Tempo run
Wed: Easy Run+Pilates
Thu: Rowing+Speed work
Fri: Other JM Video
Sat: Easy Run
Sun: Long Run

    My sister (and her hubby and my 2 year old niece and 9 month old niece) are in Haiti for missions - I understand what it's like to miss a sibling! I am excited for you to be able to spend some time with your sis!

Yay you on all the control with all that food around! I wish my weekend had gone that well regarding food intake!

My last comment - isn't it a little ironic that the LAST and slowest balloon was the ENERGIZER BUNNY? lol.

    Let me get all my points across...
1. Ok those ballons are just too cool!! I really enjoy the pictures, I think I need to start walking around with my camera, b/c I always see something picture worthy, lol, in my opinion of course.
2. It really sucks that your brother & sister is going to miss each other.
3. Sorry to hear your boss is going away again, but you did bring the fruit!! So that's all good & it's summer sO it's the best time of year to eat some yummy fresh fruit :)
4. Your workout schedule looks good to me, but I do have a question..is the 2 days of running back to back too much?!? And I wanted to know if you give yourself a rest day, aka maybe a day of just rowing or rowing isn't enough.

    Part of the whole social foods issue is the "social" aspect. We do this so that we can socialize with people. The food is just a prop. You did well in your choices. YOu should be proud!

    Regarding Social Food. I soooo Hear you!!! it is so hard to do the right thing.

as for rowing. WOW I never realized how much there is to it. Me I just stand in line for 20 minutes grab an oar and start paddling around Tom Sawyer's Island (at Disneyland.) LOL
And then you go and work out more I am impressed!

As for the Balloons TOOOO Cool. I love the Energizer bunny TOO fun!

    It's so hard to a) control myself and b) accurately track food from social food situations!! I looked at your tracker to figure out what you were talking about with the lasagna. When I'm at home or at my desk these days I literally use my food scale to figure out how many grams something is (and then I try to memorize the approx. number so I can work on my future "eyeballing" skills)...no idea how much 100 grams of lasagna is....but I love that you made an honest attempt!!

    I LOVE Jillian's new dvd's, they are killer! Those 2, plus 30 day shred helped keep myself in check the week of our wedding.

I love your work out schedule for the week, I love that you have a wide range of exercise in there. And how exciting about getting to go out in the water!! Rowing sounds seriously SO much fun!

    How does the rowing thing work? Like, I assume they give you so many lessons and then do they have teams you can join or some way that you can keep up with it?

We had SUCH a blast. I took a million pictures. It was soooooooooo gorgeous.

I will share more pictures later probably. Right now I'm HUNGRY.

We just got back from helping my DH's mentoring professor move out of their old lab. And I haven't eaten since like... 11:30... and it's 5:30 now so FOOD TIME. :)

    Love watching hot air balloons! We have a balloon rally every year and it's coming up the first weekend in August. A wild fantasy I have for celebrating my weight loss is to shuck out the big bucks for a hot air balloon ride...something I absolutely NEVER would have dreamed possible!

  I've still not been up in a balloon. My mom's been up 2 or 3 times - before she was on oxygen. She LOVED it, said you don't feel the height & it's so quiet. Even my dad liked it. He just went up cuz he didn't want to feel left out, but he loved it, too. My mom lives in Tigard, Oregon. They have a fantastic balloon festival every summer.

And that's about all I can say about the swim test.


Oh man. I swam the first length ok. Then had to kind of stop and take a break - oops. Then I came back and my HR was going nuts so I had to do part of the way back on my back just kicking.... then it was TREADING WATER TIME.


I have never tried to tread water!!! How has this eluded me???? Anyway -- I floundered around and semi floated and bumped into people, the wall, the lane marker... for the full five minutes. I was soooooooo embarrassed!!! Then I very quickly got the life jacket on and was like YES I'M DONE! THANK HEAVENS!!! I'm lucky they passed me with that treading nonsense I was not really doing. HAHAHAHA.

How humbling. :)

Oh and super strong rowing lady is like a total FISH in the water and did a flipturn at the end of the pool as well. :P

Most people did a lot better than me of course -- apparently people who want to do a watersport are mostly pretty comfortable in the water... WHO KNEW? ;)

I need to get my pool pass to the apartment complex pool and practice swimming. I don't expect to need it for the Rowing Club really (although they did show us a terrifying safety video showing a "crab" called an "ejector" ... a crab is when the oar gets stuck in the water, and an ejector is what it sounds like -- the oar gets stuck and then the handle smashes into the rower and throws them flying from the boat - YEAH). But they said that doesn't really ever happen and not to worry. There were several amusing bits in the safety video, as can be expected -- the pratfalls were hilarious. :) But anyway -- I still want to work on my swimming.

As we were leaving the Aquatic Center I looked into the pool that was closed for swim team practice and this dude was rocking a butterfly stroke across the pool and I was just like THAT IS SO FREAKING COOL!!! (I don't want to BE that guy, but if people can do that, I should at least learn how to tread water and freestyle without my heart wanting to leave my body...)

    hahaha- I just wrote a blog about my swimming experience today too! I've always been a fish, but this is the first time I had to work at it- I don't float anymore- I sink! Swimming is so much harder when you don't have all the extra fat to keep you afloat :P

    I took lifeguard training when I was younger, and that swimming test about killed me. I know what you're saying.

Swam "only" 12 laps today, including 2 just kicking a board along the pool.

Glad you've survived! need to get back to treading water myself!

    Wow. Reading stuff like this makes me thankful that I learned to swim and tread water at an early age and am proficient at it! You'll get it in no time. Treading is actually a REALLY GOOD workout!

    I love to swim and living out here it is one of the things that I miss most! I went in the pool at my parents house while we were home and of course over did it and wasn't able to really do much more pool time because of it.

    Hey! We could be swimming buddies!!!! LOL! Dana, I love that you just get out there and do stuff and don't worry about how you you look! I've learned A LOT from your example... not wanting be noticed in any sort of 'negative' way is one of the things that was keeping me fat. Thanks to you, I now care more about how healthy I am, than how I look in the eyes of others.

I'll have to eventually get a handle on the swimming, too, if I'm going to get my diving certification. Gotta swim 10 lengths to qualify! Thank GOD they don't care how long you take to swin it!

    ok i am laughing so hard right now. you are so funny. i can totally picture you flalling around. i guess i am being mean by laughing at ya! lol. treading water is a great workout. when i was at the pool yesterday there were little girls doing synchro and that amazes me. they were moving so fast with no splashes.

    Swimming is definitely on my agenda for my month off in August. I need to build lung capacity to cope better with my asthma and swimming is the way to do it, I think.

Hubby just did his first Super Sprint Triathlon, his second is in August, and he was surprised at how difficult the swimming part was for him. It definitely makes us both admire competitive swimmers. And their bodies.... ! Of course, I admire the male competitive swimmers just a little bit more than the women.


Getting into the pool to practice is definitely a worthwhile thing.

    I am going to be right there with you! I suck at swimming. Treading water and doggie paddling are about the only skills I currently posses in the water. This is really cool, Dana. I am really proud of you and impressed and inspired!

    Enjoy working on your swimming!! That's a real weak point for me as well, only I would have been quite the opposite - done horribly on the swimming portion but sailed through the treading water. Treading water and handstands were about all I ever did in the pool growing up - who knew that would come back to bite me in the butt as an adult?? Anyway have fun, it'll only make rowing that much more fun for you!!

    Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha...

I went swimming this morning and I was getting ready to write a blog about how I'm finally FASTER than someone =) I was sooo excited. There were these two guys next to me, both in those speedo swim shorts (the ones that look like bike shorts - but without all the padding =) and caps and googles so I figured they were pretty serious swimmers. And really,... anyone swimming at 6am is most likely there to get a good workout. So a couple of times we ended up pushing off the wall at the exact same time. And yeah,... I was faster than the one guy (Weeeeeeeee =)

I haven't tried to tread water in FOREVER either, though so I don't know how I would be. I DO know that it's all about scuttling and finding that "lift point." Hmmm,... maybe I'll have to try it soon and report back.

Some of us like the water and some don't. But the bigest group just never got in much. Sounds like you are in that group. You will do fine. You are athletic so your body can do all that swimming stuff, you are intellligent so you can learn how, and you are determined so you will not let yourself flounder and flop! (but I wish there was video!) emoticon

practice swimming should get you where you need to be. Maybe this summer I will try to learn to swim.

    Swimming has always been a "natural" for me...my weight has been a PLUS of sorts, increasing my buoyancy throughout my childhood. Living a block away from Lake Michigan during my childhood I would practically LIVE in the water!

I suspect with your focus on getting lean & mean...lol, you have like ZERO buoyancy so you're going to have to put more effort into floating, swimming, etc.

What a fun challenge tho! :-)

I'm still a LITTLE tired, I think that's to be expected after a couple days with not enough sleep and still a wonky schedule, but hopefully I can recover soon and move on. I definitely feel MUCH better than yesterday.

So... my food has been so weird. It's challenging to a), get enough protein, b) not eat too much of something else, and c) spread those lower calories throughout the whole long day so I don't go insane.

Here's what today is looking like:

6:45ish - post rowing club, prior to run - BANANA!
7:30-8ish - After run and shower - Archer Farms Multigrain Ceral (10g protein), a little over half a scoop of protein powder and a cup of light vanilla soymilk - (30g protein total)
***NAP from about 8:45-11:30***
12ish - Popcorn and a hard boiled egg - 10g protein
***at work now***
3PM - Archer Farms Lowfat Probiotic Yogurt - 5g protein (I found a better yogurt, but I gotta use this kind up first!)
5PM-6PM - LUNCH!!! A salad w/ Salmon and Feta and a Ginger Dressing, more yogurt, my snack mix, and cottage cheese w/ blueberries - 47g protein
8PM - Can of Tuna on Wasa Rye Crackers w/ Mustard on top - 26g protein
Somewhere around 11PM ish - DINNER!!! Buffalo Burger w/ Cheese and a side of Green Giant Immunity Boost Veggies - 30g protein.

That all totals to: 1939 cal/ 222carbs / 60g fat / 150g protein

I have remaining: 71cal / 4carbs / OVER 4g fat / 1g protein

So -- pretty good balance!!!!!! Not too far over on fats, and I came in at 60g yesterday, too. :P I arbitrarily set a Saturated Fats goal of under 25g because I knew that with an increased fat ratio I needed to pay attention to this number, but now that I look a few places I'm seeing anywhere from 7-10% recommendation for Sats which is obviously lower than 25%. THAT SAID -- today's cals were at 1939 and Saturated Fats were at 19. But I'm going to change the actual GOALS in my settings to make sure that I can be more watchful of that.

My sodium has skyrocketed lately too -- I know yesterday is due to all the cheese, lunchmeat, and canned soup. :P Today is a much better 2801mg (down from the frightening 4613 yesterday and 4376 the day before!) -- but I can still try to keep an eye on that as well.

But I definitely have to plan MUCH more carefully at this point to be within the narrower than Sparks Ranges, and to adjust my eating to the new percentages. I'm hoping when I've been at it for a while it'll be a bit easier, but I'm proud of the success I've had so far in getting in that protein! WOOT!

So this morning was Rowing Club Day 3 -- I want to be so much better than I am right now.

There's the split times -- how fast it takes to go 500m. Well, I was mostly focusing on form and trying to distribute the power smoothly and evenly from my legs to my back to my arms -- my back seems to be the weak link sometimes and I get a little dip during that portion of the stroke on the wave style display. ANYWAY! But then at the end she had us all try an exercise she used to help SARAHISKIDA to develop her power in her stroke.

She went around the backside of the erg and held the handle so that we were pusing with our legs until our rears came of the seat with our arms straight so we could feel the tension of the pull in our shoulders. She then encouraged us to look for that feeling when driving in our legs. I think I had the concept down, but after doing the exercise with each person she pushed us individually to lower our split times. Well, the DUDE next to me went before me and got down to 1:40 something, after starting over 2min... well dangit I wanted to get as close as I could so I pushed it until I at least got below a 2min split. YAR!!! Then this other lady -- kinda short, not a thin athletic looking body -- she went and her splits were down to 1:45 ish I think. Her little power arcs looked perfectly curved and high and I was like DANNNNNNNNNG. I gotta WORK! HAHAHA :D

But I like that feeling. That little sparked competitiveness. Although we're all going to be rowing together, wouldn't it be perfect if we all get our power up to the same level and are able to really book it??? :D

Tomorrow is the swim test and then next week it's ON THE WATER! BOAT TIME!

After rowing camp, I did a 2 mile run. I was sooooo bargaining with myself to get it done because I was tired.

I ate my banana and during Rowing Camp I talked myself into going to a particular running area - the park with the 1 mile loops. I figured mentally it'd be easier for me to consider doing 2 of those instead of one longer loop or running around a shorter place where I had to see the same thing a million times. HAHAHA.

Then about halfway through my run I saw the swingsets... and I was like, MAN. I haven't been on a swingset in AGES!! So sad that I don't want to stop to get on because then I'll be interrupting this run that I need to get done. Then I said to myself -- WELL WHY THE HECK NOT??? And I told myself that when I got to this part on my run on the second loop I'd almost be done and I could take a swinging break. :)

So I checked my time so I could subtract out my swinging (haha), and took a 2 min swinging break. SO FUN!!!!!!!!!!!! I remember being on swings before and having the seat AND the beginning of the chains digging into my legs. It was uncomfortable to say the least. Today I just felt like a kid again and I still had my music going (yay running to The Dirtbombs - Ultraglide in Black) and just WENT FOR IT. Actually using my body to drive myself higher and it was sooooooo fun. :)

Then I got off and finished the last little bit of my run with a big smile on my face.

    OMG swinging is DA BOMB DIGGITY! Woot! I love it!

You are so detailed with your numbers. Just doing the basic stuff can drive me bonkers sometimes, I don't know how you do it. I'm assuming the numbers change once you reach goal weight? Does Spark do that for you when you go into the last phase?

You're doing so good on your protein intake. I have a hard time getting mine in. I'm under on most days. I have to figure that one out. But reading your stuff makes me want to eat even better than I do now! Woot! You rock Dana! So inspiring. :) I feel you on the sodium as well. That's something else that I have trouble with sometimes. It's not supposed to be over 2300 for me and I find on a lot of days I go over by a couple hundred mg. I'm working on that as well.

I do that same crap, if someone passes me in a race (for example) and they don't *look like* (I know that is ridiculous) they *should* be faster than me I get PISSED! Channel the competition, use the force!

Your lunch sounds delish! Re: 8pm snack I have been making tuna salad a lot lately. I use the hellmans (I think, whoever makes miracle whip) light it only has 20 calories per tablespoon. Yesterday I made a tuna melt, I used a trader joes whole wheat mini bagel, open faced with the tuna salad on top, a slice of tomato then sprinkling of ff cheddar, under the broiler. It only tasted sinful :)

    What a great day! I'm always paranoid about my sodium intake...it's always on the high side and there's really no big food culprits around to take the responsibility. Swings are fun, I went on the playground a week ago and had a blast going down the fire pole and running up the rope ladders. You truly are my fitness idol with your running and rowing :) Great job lady!

    I know just what you mean about being competitive with the people around you. I try to run faster than the skinny people on the treadmills - it probably looks funny with the chubby girl running her little heart out for all of 30 seconds (cuz that's about all I can do at their pace!). A little competition is good - keeps you striving for greater goals. That sounds really fun - and like a great workout!

So, I gotta ask - what's with all the protein? Is it cuz you are trying to build your lean body mass and lose a few more pounds of fat? Ummm... yeah, you really do need to cut the sodium down or you'll be frustrated with water weight.

You sound like, other than the psycho schedule, you are in a pretty good place right now. I am happy for you!

BTW - have you tried Greek yogurt? I don't know why it took me so long to try it, but with a little honey and about 1/4 cup of homemade granola - it's delish. Both the Fage 0% and the Oikos 0% (from Stoneyfield) are yummy.

    That sounds like quite a work out Dana! I can't wait to hear all about your rowing. There are two row groups here, one private and one operated through the state parks division. I'd love to take rowing lessons but am pretty concerned about my back, which is not in the best of shape. I've had to see a physical therapist for it several times over the years. I am hoping to take some kayaking lessons and get a season pass to rent a kayak for the summer--sounds like so much fun! It's just going to come down to whether we can afford it or not.

The swinging sounds like fun too, I'm glad you stopped and enjoyed yourself. I love swinging. It's such a freeing feeling.

    I LOVE to swing, too! Every once in a while I talk my husband into going to a play park 11:00pmish after the heat has gone... with our little girl in her jammies... and we swing to our hearts content and we don't have to share! GOOD FOR YOU for living your life rather than letting your goals distract you from it! You'll be richer for it!

    Oh my gosh Dana, one of my favorite runs was about - wow - nine years ago (gasp) - I was going to university in North Dakota, and to keep myself occupied I ran twice a day. On one run I passed a park with swings - I stopped and got on the swings and just felt so free and happy.....

Thanks for reminding me of that!!

(You're doing an awful lot of activity in the morning without much in your tummy... maybe an applesauce or something would be a helpful pre-rowing snack?? Just an idea)
