Is there a life after vacation?

Thursday, October 22, 2009

I've been back from Switzerland for a few days. The trip was a feast in more ways than one: feasting on good food, of course was high on the list. It was also a feast for the eyes - the scenery in the Swiss Alps is everything the postcards promise. It was also a feast for soul and spirit: the fellowship with friends old and new, wonderful times of worshipping the King. I went on a couple of solo hikes that were super - on one I even burned something like 800 calories!

I also had some good times of prayer and insight while I was gone. Nothing surprising, really, just more clarity and focus on things that have been occupying my mind for a long time. For one thing, I realized while I was at this "Time of Refreshing" how important it is to build these times into my day-to-day life and not just let myself get burned out while I look forward to next October! Practically, this means getting to bed earlier which means turning off the puter earlier.

I also felt confirmed that my place is still in Germany right now. It's hard watching my parents go through their struggles from a distance but I can only be involved to the extent that they allow me to be.

I'm blessed to live in a place that has a beauty of it's own, the Rems River valley. The sunset shot was taken on a recent Nordic walking tour. So I'm back "down in the valley", have been catching up on blogs and am now back to tracking food and fitness on SP again today. I got to sleep in this morning, so I've already enjoyed a mini time of refreshing!

I was in Switzerland for the first time last July...I agree the scenery is beautiful. We even took the train from Geneva to Zurich so I could meet a cyber friend!
Michelle, I'm happy that you were so blessed and I know you were a blessing too to the people you were with.
I know it's hard to be apart from your parents but in this life it has to be GOD 1st!!

I enjoyed looking at the pics too and it is easy to tell why you feel so refreshed! It is important for us to take time for ourselves and not get too bogged down with our daily life!

You are doing all you can for your parents and I'm sure they appreciate it. From what I've read of your comments they sound a little independent and I'm sure they want you to live your own life too!

Every once in a while it is important for us to feel we are in the Lord's will and doing what He wants us to do! What a beautiful place to get your confirmation!

Hugs

Michelle, the pictures are so beautiful. I'm glad you had such success on your retreat. Sounds so inviting.

It must be very hard to be away from your parents right now, but the Lord knows best. If you stay in the center of His will everything will work out. He is faithful and will not let you down. God bless you. I am still praying for you and your parents. Many blessings, Shirley

Michelle, The pictures are breathtaking! Glad for the insight the Lord gave you while you were there. I know being in a place like that can only lead to worship....you have to worship the Creator. I was in the Himalayas once and had that same kind of feeling/sense. Trust you are able to get back into the "swing of things". Praying for you as you are so far away from your parents at this time. I understand the feeling.

Mountain High

Monday, October 12, 2009

I'll be on vacation for the next few days, going to a retreat in the Swiss Alps. It's called "Time of Refreshing" and I know that it will be just that for me. I'm taking the train. It's a 7-hour ride, so there will be lots of time for reading, listening to music, daydreaming and snoozing. I will need to pay attention because I have to change trains 4 times and don't want to miss any connections! I know the route, though, having been to the same location about 6 times before.

At the retreat, we'll enjoy times of worship and encouragement, good fellowship, delicious food, and magnificent scenery. I usually get up for an early morning walk before breakfast. There's time for long walks or hikes in the afternoon.

I'll be doing without the laptop and Internet access is at a café down the street from the hotel. So I'll only be peeking in on SP once or twice. Good week!

Bye, Bye Credit Card!

Saturday, October 03, 2009

One of my CC companies decided to raise their interest rate to 24-something earlier this year. I opted out and the account will close when it expires at the end of the year. I figured there's no reason to keep the card around. I might be tempted to USE it! So today, with some encouragement from some other Dave Ramsey fans, I killed it!

You go girl! I HATE those things. We had the same thing happen after being great clients with Citibank for FIFTEEN YEARS. We never missed a payment. Not once. When my husband lost his job, I called and asked for their understanding. They didn't care. So.....we will NEVER be with Citibank again. I am so proud of you! I wish more people didn't live on their cards. It is a hard habit to break. Woohoo for you!

I can sure understand why people want to get rid of their credit cards these days. Those Companys are ruthless. I lost my job the end of last year, after working almost 26 years, and lived on Unemployment and my savings up until 2 mos ago. I now have no income, and I tried to explain to 2 of these high interest credit cards, that I was in the interim, as for getting my next income check. And those suckers don't care, I am still getting nailed for late payment fee (needless to say, I was never behind until now) and they are closing my accounts. I was floored at their behavior. Do these credit card companys know if they keep treating the "good paying" consumer this way, because of a minor setback, that they will lose us, and their company and their own jobs? Geeesh if only.

emoticon and emoticon Michelle. Those credit card companies are terrible any more. I have 2 cards but only use them every once in a while and pay it off as soon as the bill comes. I was in over my hear too many times...No More. I've been debt free for 10 years now!

I think you did the right thing by cutting it up. But cancel the account effective immediately, do not wait until the end of the year.

I pay my cards off in full every billing cycle. It's really the only way to beat the high interest.

Good luck to you!

Good for you Michelle...I only have one and it's always paid up at the end of every month. Sometimes you need then for buying things on the internet...but that way I only buy what I know I can pay for. It's good practice in self control too.
