Wild horses...

Friday, August 21, 2009

...can't keep me from getting my 30 minutes minimum of exercise each day! Here in Florida, I've actually been enjoying the heat and humidity after all the cold and rain of the summer in Germany. Tomorrow I'm even running a 5K - at 7:30 AM. I miss my Spark time and buddies but don't think I'll be able to get back to regular tracking and posting till I'm back in Germany next week. Too much "excitement" on the home front with Mom and Dad.

Thanks to everyone for their comments, prayers and words of encouragement. Mom is back at rehab as of yesterday. She "fell" out of her wheelchair there on Monday and was rushed to the ER. I'm not sure what actually happened, but I suspect she got overconfident and didn't ask for help when trying to maneuver into a new position of some kind. She has a nasty scrape on her back and a cut on her arm. Both will take awhile to heal. In the hospital, they also discovered a mild case of pneumonia, she is still battling a bladder infection and has mrsa in her nose. But she is a trooper.

As is Dad. I'm sometimes more concerned about him than Mom because he has such a hard time asking for help. He's lost a bunch of weight over the past year, and is tired much of the time. He drives out to rehab to see her 3 times a day and tries to meet her every need and request. Also an amazing guy.

I hope everyone has a great weekend and is working the plan!

Packing it up

Wednesday, August 05, 2009

I'm about to pack up the laptop. I leave the apartment tomorrow at 5:00 AM for a 7-something flight - guess I'd better check that again, huh?

I fly from Stuttgart, to Frankfurt, to Philadelphia to Hartford, CT first. I'll spend a few days with my grandmother who turns 95 next week. My sister is coming up from NYC for the day on Friday. I'm excited to see both of them. It's been about 5 years!

While I'm in CT, I may check email from the computer room at the independent living place where G'ma lives, but don't plan to really be online much till I get to Florida on Monday.

Thanks to everyone who commented on my August goals. Looking back at the list, a lot of it was more of a to-do list for my trip, and not just a set of goals for the month. I wish I were really as organized as it might seem - I'm not and that's why I need lists! Your words were very encouraging.

It's great to know that y'all will be here on Spark when I log in again!

I pray for travelling mercy for you. I have been both to Stuttgart and Frankfurt; during my military career I was stationed in Darmstadt while living in Babenhausen. I did enjoy my tour of duty in Europe, had the opportunity to travel extensively. Okay back to you; it is truly a blessing for your grandmother to turn 95, I do pray that you enjoy your time together and with your sister as well.

I will miss you while you are away but keep in touch whenever you get a chance; the main thing is to be watchful and careful. Again enjoy yourself and just know your SparkFriend will be thinking of you and praying for your safe arrival and return.
Peace & Blessings

July Goals Update

Sunday, August 02, 2009

Here's an update of how I did on my July goals. I put 3 stars if the goal was met, one or two if I made some degree of progress. August goals coming after my nap!
emoticon

Personal:

*Daily MORNING prayer (before I get tuckered out during the day!) Some progress, need to be more consistent

Home and Org:

*Tweak and follow AM and PM routines – still in progress
***Continue Work on TMMO baby step #1 – almost there! Added to both accounts this past month.
List a bunch of stuff on ebay – will do this after US trip
***Do German Taxes – Turning in the rest of the documents tomorrow! Yippee!
Declutter desk (again!) I think this will stay on the list forever LOL

Study:

Reread Book of Isaiah inductive-style – haven’t started this, needed a break
*Plot out the next year's course plan – next course will be January, but I need to scope out the rest of the year
*Brainstorm ideas for practice project – have some ideas that I need to present to my advisor

Ministry:

*Summer newsletter (was supposed to be a Spring newsletter-oh well!)- have a rough draft, will finish and mail from the US
**Worship team meeting and schedule for rest of 2009 – it was a good meeting, need to follow-up on my action steps
*Weekly visitation – only did this one week, was hindered somewhat by a cold

Health and Fitness:

10 K on the 18th? – didn’t do this, next chance for a race is Aug. 22 in FL
***1200 Cardio minutes – passed my goal
***ST at least twice a week – did this
***Continue daily exercise streak - will cross the 300-day mark on July 25th – yep, did that. Will beat my own 310-day streak in a few days!
**Make doctor and dentist appts: Dentist, Pulm., Uro., OB/GYN – made all appointments except OB/GYN who was on vacation when I called. Went to dentist and GP for check-ups, pulmonary is this Wednesday, Uro appointment is in Sept. after I get back from the States
*Lose 5 in July - don't usually focus on the scale this much, but need to speed up the losing process to meet my Aug. 5 goal – only lost 3, but that’s something!

Thursday off!

Thursday, July 30, 2009

I only have one commitment today - a meeting at church this evening at 7:30. So far today, I've spent several hours online getting caught up on email correspondence and Spark stuff. Now I need to move on to housecleaning and tax paper-taming - oh joy, oh rapture!

Started tracking again on Monday and have already lost the bit of weight I gained during the crisis with Mom (she fell and broke her hip a couple of weeks ago). I think I'm learning how to deal better with the stress - finding alternatives to snacking.

Yesterday I had a good report on my annual check-up results. No figures in the red zone on my bloodwork! My "bad" cholesterol level has continued to drop over the past two-and-a-half years. Some of you might remember that a visit to the doctor was my weight loss wake-up call. He said, "You don't need medication for high cholesterol YET!" I said to myself at that moment, "... and I WON'T need medication for it, either!" Six months later, after losing a bunch of weight and sticking to a regular exercise program, I was tested again. This time I was seen by the other partner in the doctor's practice. He looked at my past report and asked, "Did we prescribe medication for your high cholesterol?" When I told him, no - he asked how I had done it. Eating less, exercising more with the help of the Lord and SP.

I did have an earache yesterday but it's already clearing up. He gave me antibiotics and I'm using a nasal spray. With all the allergens floating around the past few weeks, I seem to have caught a sinus infection - maybe the tail end of that cold I had a few weeks ago.

On the Mom front, she was transferred to rehab yesterday. We were surprised that this took place so quickly. We were told earlier that she wouldn't be moved until the post-op delirium had cleared up. She's better, but still having episodes.

We ARE very glad that she's in a quieter and more cheerful place than the hospital. I visited this new place with Dad when we were looking for a place for her to recover after the car accident. They weren't able to take her then so she had to stay in a facility that --- well, let's just say it wasn't our first, second, third or fourth choice :) It worked out well because it was close for Dad to visit, and she got along well with all the staff. But we're happy that she doesn't have to go back there this time.

The new place has a little lake behind it and a patio for bird-watchers that I think she'll enjoy. A week from Monday, I'll be there to see how she's doing in person. Till then, I'm making daily calls to get updates. I'm sure glad I have a flat rate for international calls!

Working on my July goal list today and planning for August...

emoticon for anyone who read this whole epistle!!!

I have a bad back attack and haven't bee able to be so active, ( my anxiety increased as well) and I'm struggling to get into more exercise.
I have 2 months to loose a couple of kg. DH and I started a sign language course last night, he is (not completely but) deaf and I'm loosing my hearing gradually, it was very successful.

You will be so pleased to be back home and able to see your mum and dad. It is amazing how stressful not being close at hand is, and not knowing what is happening in the moment. You have also met important goals on your health issues and have the best reasons to stay with Sparks and stay healthy. WooHoo!
You're blogs are always interesting - short or long.

Michelle, Your updates are always a joy to read. I feel like I know your parents and have a vision of them in my mind. I am glad your mom is recovering but as you know at their age, it takes motre time. I am guessing your dad is holding down the fort. It must have been vert traumatic for him as well.

Thanks for keeping us up to date. Enjoy your trip home and hopefully it will relieve some of your stress,

Overall, quite a positive post! I'm glad things seem to be getting better (less stressful).

Oh, and I hear ya on the stress eating!!!

I like bird watching too. At one point, I got to recognizing the different bird calls of common birds around here (robin, cardinal, finch, etc.). Definitely a positive in a recuperative setting.
