What a wonderful picture of your parents. 58 years is a number you don't see very often concerning wedding anniversaries. Congrats to your parents and may they have many more.

Looking up

Thursday, September 25, 2008

The trip to the ER on Monday, seemed to have gotten the attention of the staff at the rehab/nursing home and Dad reports that they are keeping a better eye on Mom since that incident. I guess sometimes things have to get worse before they get better! She's also been having lots of visitors and is using a dry erase board for communication now. That seems to be working well.

Just a reminder that my dad, sis and I are blogging at robahsroad.blogspot.com to report on Mom's condition to friends and family. So if you don't hear from me here on Spark for a few days, that's where I might be.

Thanks for all the good thoughts and prayer support!

Michelle, I just heard about your mom today and I want you to know that she is in my prayers, as well as you - and I don't say that lightly. My mom and I were always close, so I know how difficult this is for you. But you have God's everlasting arms to lean on, and I want to be there for you as well. I'll keep up with you through your blog.

Love,
Carole

Hospital and rehab stays are an education, you have to get good at monitoring them and speak out for your loved one. I had a few talks when DH was in hospital. Glad your era mum is communicating, that means a will to live and participate! Hope she continues in the up curve.

Jet Lag Day 3

Tuesday, September 23, 2008

Didn't get much sleep last night at all. I called Dad yesterday evening and found out that Mom had to go to the emergency room Monday afternoon. Her blood oxygen level was down and they wanted to check her out. Turns out it wasn't anything too urgent but there was some blockage in her breathing tube. Those nurses at the rehab facility better start checking that more often and suctioning as needed!

All the more reason for me to get back to the States as soon as I can. I really feel that both parents need me to be there. Lots of decisions for me to make - can I take a leave of absence from my job here in Germany? would it be best to give up the apartment? sell the car? What kind of job opportunities are there for me Stateside? I haven't lived in the US for over 24 years except for a 6-month stretch about 12 years ago, so this is new territory for me.

Anyway, back here in D'land, my first English group of the day didn't show up this morning so I got to come home for a few hours, and still got paid for the morning --- and that's a very good thing, especially as tired as I am and after not having any income to speak of for the last 3 weeks!

    Huge decision!
My husband had liver surgery this year and they drove us nuts with the oxygen in the blood. Really crazy.

First I wanted to say I love the apples in your background, very fall like! I think it's a wise decision to come back to the states. Your mom needs as many advocates as she can get. Is it a nursing home/rehab center? If it is, all the more reason to come back. We went through that with my MIL when she had her fall, unfortunately she never recovered enough to leave there and ended up in the nursing home part of the center. Hind sight is 20/20, and I wish we could've done more to advocate for her.

I'm sure your dad could use the support as well, and you'll find something job wise. You can always return to Germany sometime in the future. I know this isn't an easy decision for you to make, but I know the good lord will guide you in making the right one. Let go and let God.

One week later

Sunday, September 21, 2008

I decided to postpone my return trip to Germany. We had a huge challenge and much frustration trying to find a rehab place that would take Mom because of her tracheal breathing tube. Finally found ONE in their home county that would take her and it was definitely not among our first choices. But it is closest to their home and that means that Dad and all her friends will be able to visit often and keep an eye on her.

I'm back in Germany now, after rebooking from Monday to Saturday departure. I really wanted to make sure Mom was settled in the new place and it was a good thing that I did. On Friday evening, when I went back to check on her (thank you Holy Spirit, for that prompting!), she had tried to get up on her own and I found her in a little heap on the floor next to her bed. Now we've engaged a night nurse for her, thanks to a dcousin, at least until Mom gets oriented to her new surroundings.

Now it's time for me to get going on making the necessary arrangements to return to the US for an extended stay. I haven't had time to even think much about all that will involve, but that process will begin tomorrow! Tonight, I need to try to get some more sleep and recover from the jet lag.

Mom

Thursday, September 11, 2008

Mom was finally moved out of the SICU yesterday. That was encouraging for us. Now, we wait and see about the next steps.

There are so many decisions to make. We're definitely on new territory here, but the hospital staff has been very helpful, family has been great, and Mom and Dad have an amazing network of friends. We appreciate everyone's prayers and greetings and moral support so much!

I fly back to Germany on Monday and that's going to be really hard.

My dsis and I have a blog going to keep people posted on Mom's progress:
