Other ways to prepare and stay on track

Sunday, March 16, 2014

Well... this past week I learned to be a little more prepared when working my 12 hour shifts. I need to pack the whole days menu or I become too hungry and get an annoying headache. I also reached out for help on this blog and sparkteams, and received some much needed support. So, now I have some go to filling snack ideas to use in a pinch. I also figured out that I can freeze some of the items on my nutrition menu like rice and beets. Freezing items will help minimize prep time and cost of wasted food. Anything that makes this process easier is always welcome.

As I runner I have experimented with home made running jells, but in the end a bit of dried or fresh fruit seems to work as well as anything. Dried from is very condensed and easy to store, might be as good for an RN doing the long distance as for a runner.

I find planning ahead is really vital to staying on track. If I let myself get too hungry and I don't have healthy food with me then I set myself up for failure big time. I hate it when I self sabotage! You really have a challenge with 12 hour shifts! Keep up the good work.

What do I do when Im at work and I need a power packed super snack?

Saturday, March 15, 2014

Ok... yesterday I ran into a big stumbling block that I know will happen again, so I need some suggestions. I am a floor nurse and I work 12 or more hour shifts (cuz an RN that gets out at 12 hours on the dot is not me). Anyway, I was very good and packed my breakfast and lunch, but at 5-6 pm after running around all day - I started to get a headache and was truly hungry. I could not leave the floor. I drank some skim milk. Not enough. Looked for the PB crackers. None. So, I grabbed the ice cream sandwich. I know I know. It was a poor choice... I was desperate and had limited resources.

Fixes include packing my dinner and snack on the days I work or finding some power packed super snacks.

Any suggestions?

I'm not good on advice. I'd go to fattening comfort food...

I always have a granola bar in my bag (usually Nature Valley)

They have lots of 100 calorie choices (nuts, yogurt, fruits, etc.) If you are really organized, pack some healthy choices, sometimes just a 100 calorie bag of nuts will satisfy.

What a wonderful job you have! Be proud!

Setting myself up for success

Wednesday, March 12, 2014

No one would ever accuse me of being a good Girl Scout... I mean I am a fly by the seat of your pants, on the spur of the moment, do what makes you happy (within reason) kinda girl. But, that doesn't translate well with weight loss. So, today I went through the weeks meals, modified when needed, and cleaned the fridge. Tomorrow I will go grocery shopping with the list and prepare the next days meals since I have to work. This weekend I will prepare for the other two work days. I'm hoping that all this prep work gets me past the yo yo 213 I'm stuck at lately, and inch me closer to the short term goal of 10 lbs lost.

Well I did make it to the store and made the meals for today and tomorrows breakfast and lunch. I hope it gets easier. All this structure... I feel like singing 'don't fence me in" but I don't want to be this heavy anymore either.

Up down up down

Wednesday, February 26, 2014

Since getting back on SP I noticed that my weight had gone up to 216 from the 213 it was since I was here last year. Ten days ago I managed to get it back down to 213 only to have it return to 216. I am now back to 213 in a little less than 8 days. I am going to have to look at articles about weight yo yo-ing around. I am trying hard not to get discouraged. I really want to succeed this time around. emoticon

I am sure the stress at your work is not helping...saw your post on one of the teams...make sure to get in your exercise, it will help with the stress and your outlook...when I worked for the state and a whole department that was like your job, I weighed 200 lbs...plus I had personal stressors...once I quite my job and was able to also take care of the daycare stressor, I lost 15 pounds in the first 2 weeks after I quit...it is amazing how stress can really impact your body.

So my advice is to find ways to manage the stress first, then worry about your weight.
