Hurricane Isaac

Saturday, September 01, 2012

Thank you so much for checking on us and praying for us. Isaac was not nearly as mean to us as Katrina was, and for that we are most thankful. So many were not as fortunate, though, and have had outrageous flooding. Waters are STILL rising and there continue to be new emergency evacuation orders put in place as dams, levees, and locks are stressed -beyond their limits from the incredible rainfall. Please continue to pray for those who have lost their homes and have such horrendous damage to their homes.

One of my dear SparkSisters, Dorothy, asked about my husband, Bill's, ship and his company's other ships and how they handle hurricanes. If possible, they head away, in this case, to Galveston from Port Fourchon, Louisiana. All 200 or so ships fled in front of Isaac, as they did with Katrina. If they cannot safely get the fleet out, they lash the ships together with huge ropes (three double lines up to four inches in diameter). The largest ships (280 feed long) tie up broadside to the dock, then a smaller one and a smaller one, up to four in a row (Bill's is 190 feet long, a crew and supply ship).

Bill (CaptainCookie) dug up these photos so Dorothy and her husband cn see what we're trying to explain, so I figured I'd share them with you, as well!

On the far right you can see the size of the ropes that attach the biggest ships to the dock.

This is a great shot of the knots that hold the whole thing together. Awesome, isn't it?!

Thank you for your explanation of the ships. Nice your hubby dug that out for all.

Our one friend sort of a distant relative by marriage is a Captain also. Captain Andy.

Missy, I am so very glad to learn that you, Bill and the family survived that horrible storm with little to no damage this time. When I heard it was heading for New Orleans, I was so worried about you, and all the others in your area.

The photos are wonderful! Thank you (and Bill too, of course!) for sharing them. I had no idea that this is what the sea farers have to go through to try and keep their vessels safe, but what a clever plan.

Thank heavens you are all okay!!!
Hugs,
Kathy

emoticon for answering our Dorothy's question here, so we could learn something new & share in a very small way part of your CaptainCookie's work-a-day world. I am totally impressed with the whole process.

I am going to copy & paste your Blog to our #3 Grandson (11-yr-old), who will be properly impressed, also.

God bless you, Missy!

Praying for your safety and the safety of all in the paths of the rains from Isaac. Please thank Bill for the pictures also. You guys are GREAT!!!
May God continue to bless everyone and fulfill their needs as He knows them. I, honestly, can not begin to imagine all the rains that you get from these storms. But God knows that I am a good prayer warrior and this I will continue to do for you and all who are in need.
Continued blessings, love and hugs,

Thanks for sharing the info and for the pictures. I have a friend who lost his home and church due to Hurricane Isaac. Evacuated to TX, and most likely will not be going home. I have been praying for all of you in LA. Even though a lot of people did not lose everything they owned, everyone will be affected in some way.

Missy - 200 ships is a lot of ships to look after. It sounds like a huge task to do and needs loads of organization to get the job done well. Even getting the ships out of harbor into safety of another. Are there other shipping companies as well?

Paraprosdokians

Wednesday, August 15, 2012

12. In filling out an application, where it says, 'In case of emergency, notify:' I put 'DOCTOR.'

13. I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

14. Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut, and still think they are sexy.

18. Money can't buy happiness, but it sure makes misery easier to live with.

Underwater Sculpture

Friday, June 01, 2012

What amazing sculptures by Jason de Caires Taylor. Located in Grenada’s Moilinere Bay, Jason de Caires Taylor’s underwater sculptures are a monument created to pay homage to the hundreds of slaves that sought freedom or were forced to jump overboard slave ships traveling through the Middle Passage from West Africa to the Americas and the Caribbean.

Moiliniere Bay suffered considerable storm damage in recent years and the placement of an artificial structure has provided a new base for marine life to proliferate. The sculptures were also designed to create a diversion from other areas of coral reef currently endangered by over use from water activities.

This link will bring you to a site with more of his fabulous underwater creations:
