We Have Goats!!

Sunday, June 24, 2012

Well, we had a visit of goats yesterday. The city had about 750 goats brought from Idaho to our fair city. Their "job" was to clean up the undergrowth along the river. The herders came from Peru. Not sure how often this is done, but the residents who have lived in these apartments for a number of years were really excited. They had witnessed this event before. Sections are fenced in and the goats are there for about a day. Then they are moved down to the next section.

Well, yesterday they arrived in our "backyard" First the fence was put up and then the goats arrived. Oh, so cute!!. My son said he had never thought of goats as being cute, but by the end of the day we were all scheming as to how we could kidnap one and keep it here for a pet!!

They ate and ate - and really cleaned out from the edge of our lawn to the river. At one point 4 escaped and were headed toward the parking lot. But, one of the herders was quick to catch them. He opened a part of the fence and shooed them back in. Today they are to be closer to the bridge but still part behind our apartment - so will be seeing them again today.

They are arriving:

Here is a cutie!!

Some escaped. The herder was quick to chase them back, pull down part of the fence, and get them back inside!

Here is one of the "herders":

Lovely pictures Barb, they're doing a good job. We use sheep over here to keep the churchyards and the old cemetery clean, they do a grand job.

My friend Penny kept two pygmy goats for years. Oh1 so cute but very destructive, you can't keep any foliage of any description, they even had a go at her washing one day!...lol...

Thanks so much for the pics and the story! What a fun way to cut the grass. Cleveland is using some sheep to do similar duty. I hope it works well.

I've read about this. Here in the south they use the goats to get rid of the kudzu. I would have loved to be there to see them. Loved your pictures.

A Call to my Daughter!!

Friday, June 22, 2012

Yesterday I called my daughter, Vicki, and we had a great visit! She was much more in touch - she told me her sons are not 19 and 23, that she lives in Salem and I am in Pendleton. The conversation was mostly "normal" She does use the word "quintation" frequently - for names of places and people. She told me that she had gone to Quintation for lunch. But, it was so good to be able to talk to her. Just as we were saying goodbye, she said she would call me later this week.

Here is Vicki calling her Grandmother! This was when she about about 2 - a "few" years ago!

I'm so pleased Vicki is progressing well Barb, it's been a long haul but it must be so hearting for you to talk with her, being such a long way off.
That's real progress for her too.
When my auntie had a stroke she called a lot of things 'fork', usually she was trying to get the name of someone when she did it...lol...but eventually it came back to her. I know a stroke is different to vicki's condition but the brain is pretty similar how it copes.

She looks so cute in the picture 'phoning her gran...aaaw!
Have you sent her this one, she'll love it!

Cool This Morning

Tuesday, June 19, 2012

This is June and it is still so cool and a bit overcast! Oh, yeah, Summer is not here until isn't is about the 20th?? Oh, and that is tomorrow! YEAH!! I think I am the only one in my family who is looking forward to those long, hot Summer days!! Like my Mother, the heat does not bother me.

I have dome a bit of sewing - there is a website that occasionally has a mystery quilt block and have that almost finished. So fun to pick the colors and not have any idea about what you will end up with. This time ii is the "Comedy/Tragedy" Masks. Not sure how they are supposed to fit together but I'm working on it. Also am finishing some quilted potholders.

My granddaughters have started swimming for the summer - I will be picking up Jenni about 9:15 - they start at 7 each morning - their Dad takes them and I will be taking them home part of the time.

And, will be meeting Elaine for coffee this morning. That is a highlight for my week - always enjoy my time with her.

Well, off to get ready.

As a quilter I understand your excitement on the mystery block. I'm more controllling though. I tend to want to know what it looks like because I'm afraid I will have wasted my time if I end up not liking it. But, I do them anyway and so far so good!

Enjoy your hot summer and quilting.

Beginning Another Week

Sunday, June 17, 2012

What a week! Just finished a week of VBS at church and it was "awesome!" We had about 50 children and they learned about trusting God - not matter who they are, where they are or what is happening around them. It was a very busy week!

Now my calendar is mostly empty for this week - and I am so happy! By the end of the week, I was "pooped" - I just do not have the energy any more to keep up with that level of activity and excitement. Oh, but it was so worth it - (and I did nap every afternoon - don't think I would have made it otherwise.)

Am holding my weight loss - rather surprised because I have not been charting my diet this past week. However, I have found that I am just not "hungry". Just not time to think about food which has been my comfort when I am feeling alone. Well, I was not alone this past week!!

Now I want to loose another couple of pounds in the next month. I would love to get to about 182 - 184 by August when I meet my son in Hood River. That would be great!! And, with summer here and more outside activities it may just happen. Oh, I would be so happy!! I am putting aside a few $$ to reward myself on that trip if I can get my weight down there. There are some great shops there and am sure I can find just the right item!!

Who Am I??

Saturday, June 09, 2012

Was just "surfing" the web and found this "This is your life! Are you doing what you want to do?" But, today I am not even sure I know who I am.

I could sit here and moan and feel sorry for myself - but I am not going to!! So am going to get up and make a plan for the day:
1. Plan dinner for this evening when Greg, #2 child, comes for dinner.
2. Run a few errands - pick up a few needed groceries and to WalMart to get myself a couple more sweatshirts. Not sure is we are going to have a summer. Oh, I know we will eventually, but it is still cool, breezy and rainy.
3. Begin a Bible study that I receive by email. From www.jesuswalk.com - this study is about the Names of God - have done before, but it is so very good.
4. Fix dinner for this evening and enjoy a time with 2 of my boys.

But, is this what defines me? Who am I really?? What makes me tick? Haven't heard that phrase for quite a while. Need to explore that thought for a while!
