My Daughter, Vicki

Wednesday, May 09, 2012

Today is Vicki's Birthday! Just wish I could be with her.

She has been talking to her sister occasionally on the phone - and yesterday she asked to talk to me. So the nurse called me and put Vicki on the phone. She sounded tired - said she had had a hard day. But, It was so good to hear her voice. She understands that I live in Pendleton and it is a ways from Salem where she is. Just makes me want to go see her - perhaps later this summer. Not sure - I am just not up to driving that far anymore.

My sister sent me a box of pictures that Mom had - many of them were of Vicki as she was growing up - many that I did not have. So am scanning them and will send a few at a time to her.

Just have to add a couple of pictures:

That Baby is 55 today!!

    Gorgeous, Happy Birthday Vicki emoticon

Keep your spirits up Barb, I know you can't get to visit her as often as you'd like but remember she's well on the road to recovery and has her family with her. It's good you can speak with her on the 'phone emoticon

Struggling

Tuesday, May 08, 2012

I am really struggling right now with this weight loss thing!! Found a book I have had for a long time - "Gentle Eating", a different approach to weight loss. The author is a favorite of mine - Stephen Arterburn -

His first premise:
We live in a society that wants instant satisfaction - he begins with the suggestion of changing the environment where you eat. Instead of the fast-food mentality, choose a pleasant, stress-free atmosphere. When we take time to enjoy a meal, we - I - find that I feel full and satisfied.

An example for me is when I fix fish - now becoming a favorite. Dinner is fish, brown rice, and a veggie. I find myself savoring each bit - eating less - and being very satisfied after dinner.

Good advice Barb, I like to take my lunch outside to savour. I sit on a bench near our pond, it's lovely to watch the fish gliding around and see and hear the birds and insects...very relaxing and serene!
I'm struggling myself at the moment and the weather isn't letting me sit outside either so after my final doctors appointments on Friday (I'm hoping I don't need to go anymore!) I'm going to really knuckle down and try to actually lose some weight instead of just thinking about it.
Thanks for the lovely blog comments and the goodie, at last that part of the hospital circuits is over, I've also had my last cancer check and after four years can officially say I'm cancer free, I've just this stupid immune system and liver thingy to sort now but they are both better than they were and hopefully this next check will be even better.

We all do want instant satisfaction, but there is something even more satisfying when we know we've worked hard and stuck with it. Every small goal is success!

I haven't read the book you mentioned, but I have done what you're done which is to make a pleasant eating atmosphere and it does make a big difference. Good luck to you!

Challenges

Saturday, April 28, 2012

There are many wonderful challenges here on SparkPeople! I have joined a few, but somehow find it hard to continue and complete. I really do want to -

I was a single parent and worked at a company for 30 years - retired - and 6 years ago, moved to Pendleton, Oregon. Now I love to read, knit, quilt, but those are not active enough. I do have a membership at the 24 Hour Fitness and feel so much better when I go even for 20 minutes on the treadmill. But somehow, if I am not out running errands, I just do not go.

My apartment is just above the river and across the bridge (just a block away) is the River Walk Way - a beautiful walk along the river. Right now my excuse is the weather - too breezy - and soon it will be "too hot". Rather lame excuses.

Today I did the bonus spin and won a DVD - now how cool is that!! Perhaps SparkPeople is trying to get me motivated in the right direction. I do feel that the staff gives us such a variety to help motivate even me. I just need to take advantage of all that they offer.

I have not made a visual poster - have seen some great ones that others have made - and perhaps that would be a good place to start.

I keep doing the same Barb but at the moment our weather is a good excuse...lol...the electricity has just come back on after a lovely storm and it's still very windy, cold and pouring down...the visual calendar sounds good, I might try one myself. emoticon

Today's Walk

Friday, April 20, 2012

This morning I walked down to the post office to return an item to amazon.com. It was cool so left on my sweatshirt. I stopped at the bead store and picked up some red beads to work on a beaded red rose - have not made beaded flowers for many years so not sure how they will turn out. But did find a good book at the library - so will give it a try!!!

When I arrived home there was another package from amazon.com at the door. That is one of my favorite on line "stores" - seems like i always have something coming from them. The package contained a couple of sets of the first 4 books of the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series. The series is now being filmed and is on HBO - we have the first season on DVD and have been watching it Sat evenings - our "Dinner and a Movie" night.

Yesterday I received an email from my son-in-law with an update on my daughter, Vicki. She is slowly regaining her memory but is still in an assisted care facility. Norris, her husband had taken her to her favorite beauty salon for a haircut - and he sent a picture.

When she was about 8 i convinced her to get a pixie cut that was so popular then. I really liked it, but not sure that she did - so we let her hair grow out again. She wore it long and straight mostly until recently when she started getting it cut shorter. (I still like the pixie cut!)

She's beautiful Barb, I'm so glad she's getting better even if it is very slowly.

I love Amazon and ebay...lol...usually it's books with me too!

Lucky you with the nice weather, we've been very wet & windy all week, some places even had snow! We had big hailstones yesterday but it didn't last long. We need the rain as we're in a drought area but I'm getting fed up of it now!
