I am really struggling right now with this weight loss thing!! Found a book I have had for a long time - "Gentle Eating", a different approach to weight loss. The author is a favorite of mine - Stephen Arterburn -
His first premise:
We live in a society that wants instant satisfaction - he begins with the suggestion of changing the environment where you eat. Instead of the fast-food mentality, choose a pleasant, stress-free atmosphere. When we take time to enjoy a meal, we - I - find that I feel full and satisfied.
An example for me is when I fix fish - now becoming a favorite. Dinner is fish, brown rice, and a veggie. I find myself savoring each bit - eating less - and being very satisfied after dinner.

There are many wonderful challenges here on SparkPeople! I have joined a few, but somehow find it hard to continue and complete. I really do want to -
I was a single parent and worked at a company for 30 years - retired - and 6 years ago, moved to Pendleton, Oregon. Now I love to read, knit, quilt, but those are not active enough. I do have a membership at the 24 Hour Fitness and feel so much better when I go even for 20 minutes on the treadmill. But somehow, if I am not out running errands, I just do not go.
My apartment is just above the river and across the bridge (just a block away) is the River Walk Way - a beautiful walk along the river. Right now my excuse is the weather - too breezy - and soon it will be "too hot". Rather lame excuses.
Today I did the bonus spin and won a DVD - now how cool is that!! Perhaps SparkPeople is trying to get me motivated in the right direction. I do feel that the staff gives us such a variety to help motivate even me. I just need to take advantage of all that they offer.
I have not made a visual poster - have seen some great ones that others have made - and perhaps that would be a good place to start.

I had a good visit with friend, Elaine, yesterday - and she brought a friend. Diana is a member of the Yurok Indian tribe located in Northern California. Diana brought a couple of pieces of beaded jewelry that she has made.
Diana is going to S. Oregon to care for a relative who is having surgery - but, she promised that when she returns she will show me how to make a few pieces. Will be fun! I have done some beading in the past - so this will be good. Now to get out some of my beads.
I got in lots of steps yesterday. In the afternoon went to the library, BiMart, the club and Safeway. However, not sure what today will bring - it is overcast and cooler today and I just don't want to go out! It does not look windy - so perhaps just a walk around the block.

Just read an article about "outsmarting" the grocery store. Now that my income has shrunk by about 40% - I am now finally and really retired - have had to redo my budget. And, groceries is one of the more flexible items.
So, I go with a list and that is all I buy. When I go thru the bakery section, I just enjoy the aroma - I avoid the center sections of the store - and shop mostly in the produce section. Whatever is in season is what goes on our table in the evening. We are eating more meatless dinners - and have enjoyed many new recipes. And, sometimes they are recipes that can just be forgotten.
I even fixed quiche for the first time - turned out really good. Another item I have been fixing again is jello - great snack with a little cottage cheese or fruit or ice cream - or just plain.
