Today's Walk

Friday, April 20, 2012

This morning I walked down to the post office to return an item to amazon.com. It was cool so left on my sweatshirt. I stopped at the bead store and picked up some red beads to work on a beaded red rose - have not made beaded flowers for many years so not sure how they will turn out. But did find a good book at the library - so will give it a try!!!

When I arrived home there was another package from amazon.com at the door. That is one of my favorite on line "stores" - seems like i always have something coming from them. The package contained a couple of sets of the first 4 books of the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series. The series is now being filmed and is on HBO - we have the first season on DVD and have been watching it Sat evenings - our "Dinner and a Movie" night.

Yesterday I received an email from my son-in-law with an update on my daughter, Vicki. She is slowly regaining her memory but is still in an assisted care facility. Norris, her husband had taken her to her favorite beauty salon for a haircut - and he sent a picture.

When she was about 8 i convinced her to get a pixie cut that was so popular then. I really liked it, but not sure that she did - so we let her hair grow out again. She wore it long and straight mostly until recently when she started getting it cut shorter. (I still like the pixie cut!)

She's beautiful Barb, I'm so glad she's getting better even if it is very slowly.

I love Amazon and ebay...lol...usually it's books with me too!

Lucky you with the nice weather, we've been very wet & windy all week, some places even had snow! We had big hailstones yesterday but it didn't last long. We need the rain as we're in a drought area but I'm getting fed up of it now!

Yesterday was Good!!

Thursday, March 29, 2012

I had a good visit with friend, Elaine, yesterday - and she brought a friend. Diana is a member of the Yurok Indian tribe located in Northern California. Diana brought a couple of pieces of beaded jewelry that she has made.

Diana is going to S. Oregon to care for a relative who is having surgery - but, she promised that when she returns she will show me how to make a few pieces. Will be fun! I have done some beading in the past - so this will be good. Now to get out some of my beads.

I got in lots of steps yesterday. In the afternoon went to the library, BiMart, the club and Safeway. However, not sure what today will bring - it is overcast and cooler today and I just don't want to go out! It does not look windy - so perhaps just a walk around the block.

Outsmarting the Grocery Store

Wednesday, March 28, 2012

Just read an article about "outsmarting" the grocery store. Now that my income has shrunk by about 40% - I am now finally and really retired - have had to redo my budget. And, groceries is one of the more flexible items.

So, I go with a list and that is all I buy. When I go thru the bakery section, I just enjoy the aroma - I avoid the center sections of the store - and shop mostly in the produce section. Whatever is in season is what goes on our table in the evening. We are eating more meatless dinners - and have enjoyed many new recipes. And, sometimes they are recipes that can just be forgotten.
I even fixed quiche for the first time - turned out really good. Another item I have been fixing again is jello - great snack with a little cottage cheese or fruit or ice cream - or just plain.

It sounds very healthy too Barb.
I like jelly, make it most days, I get the sugar free one and use it as a snack food.

Back on Track

Have done better the past few days - got to the club and did some shopping!! Wearing my trusty pedometer I have upped the number of steps each day.

My son teases me tho - telling me that I am still "sedentary". (I don't feel sedentary when I am out walking !!) Well, one of these days I am going to get beyond the sedentary stage and become "low" active. But, right now, have a ways to go!

It is sunny this morning and in the mid 40s - looks like it will warm up to the mid 50s today - great weather for a walk. Am meeting a friend for dinner downtown - another opportunity to add steps. I live just around the corner from Main Street and downtown is all of about 6 blocks. There are a few dark clouds out there - just hope it does not rain.

Life of Troubles

Sunday, March 25, 2012

Am watching a cute movie on netflix.com - The Whale of August, starring Bette Davis and Lillian Gish with Ann Southern.

Just heard a great quote: "Half of life is troubles, and the other half is getting over them!" I think I like the "getting over" part best.
