Just keep running, just keep running...

It has been awhile since I've said anything on here and so I thought I would stop by and update everyone on my Couch 2 5k progress!

Today we did Week 2, day 1. We repeated week 2 because none of us (and by none of us, I mean my mom, my sister, and I) felt that we were ready to move on to the extra 30 seconds they added to the running in Week 3. I found that today, even after taking a break from the weekend, I did the best I think I've ever done! I didn't stop once during the running/jogging parts, no matter how bad my side hurt or how much my feet felt like they were going to fall off at the waist. I got done running today and I had muscles tingling in my legs that I wasn't even aware had muscles! I've had so much fat there for so long that I just assumed the fat sucked up all the muscle and moved in! Let me tell you, its a good feeling to know that my muscle isn't all gone! ;)

I got a lot slower than my sister or my mom when it comes to the jogging parts but I never stop. I keep telling myself that if I must go slower, then I can't allow myself to stop and walk, even if just for a second or two. I'm still FAR FAR off from being a 5k runner but I do feel that my odds improve every time I run! Today I got a really sharp pain in my side from running and for once, I recognize the pain as a good thing! It meant I pushed myself to keep going when my body wanted to give up and that is something I've never been good at doing.

So, as a famous little fish kept saying, "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming..." Or in my case, running, running, running! :)

I've recently started an exercise regimen - it is called the 'Couch 25k' program. It is a pretty popular program and most people have heard of it before. If not, I encourage you to google it!

The basic point of the program is to get you from a coach potato into a runner - to be able to run for 30 minutes! You do it three times a week. For my sister, my mom, and I, we chose Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. It just seemed to make the most sense! We get up first thing in the morning and go running at about 5:15 AM or so. Your first week, you spend 90 seconds walking and then 60 seconds running.

I thought I was going to DIE!!

I'm a hard core couch potato - perhaps I should say computer potato. My computer chair probably has an indent the exact shape of my rear, I sit in it so much. For me, this is much more than I'm ever use to doing exercise wise (since high school) and after the first few times, I thought I was going to die! You do 8 sets of walking then running. About set 4, I feel as if my lungs are never going to give me air, my feet are going to fall off at the ankles, and I'm going to collapse. Lucky for me, I've got my own personal cheerleaders in the form of my mother and my sister who, despite my best efforts, never let me quit! I powered through all 8 sets with only stopping for a second or two at most, once or twice a set.

When I got done? I FELT GOOD! I've never felt good after exercising before! I always thought those people who said exercising gave them energy or made them feel good were all messed up in the head! I had never experienced such a phenomenon before and it only further goes to show me that I'm working toward the right goals. I've never been a huge fan of running but that is because I've always been overweight. I'm starting to think the one thing I avoided the most is going to be the exact thing to help push me into shape!

I'm going to be starting week two tomorrow and everything goes up 30 seconds. While they tell you that you can repeat whatever week you are on whenever you want to, I don't think I'd be doing my body justice by not pushing it to be the best it can be. So, on to week two for me! No repeating week 1 - I survived week one, I'll survive week 2, I'm sure. On top of that, my two cheerleaders won't let me quit. There is nothing like having the best support team in the world! ;)

GOIN4GR8 - Running is the number one thing I ALWAYS avoided. I'm starting to see it is the best thing for me. I can't imagine how exercise could be different with 2 new knees but I can only say it goes up from here and I encourage you to try! The part about my feet falling off? Oh my gosh, it is so true! My mom and my sister were both complaining about their knees. Me? My ankles and my feet! They were KILLING me by the time I was done! lol

    Love this post!! You encourage me to think maybe I'll even be able to run someday! (and I have 2 new knees!)

Loved the part where you thought your feet were going to fall off at the ankles; that's how I feel when walking really fast for a long time. Ha!

Good luck ... can't wait to read about your first marathon!!!

    That's where I started last year and next week I'm running my first half-marathon.

It gets easier! Just stick with it. You will be amazed by what you can do!
