I got a hug from my doctor yesterday!! Woo hoo!!

Sunday, August 23, 2009

My primary care doctor is trying to keep up with their workers who are in the Monday thru Friday 8 to 5 workaday rut. So they have abbreviated Saturday hours, which is great for someone like me with my busy schedule!!

The Saturday prior I had done my blood tests in preparation for the upcoming scrutiny. The nurse had already called me with the cholesterol results earlier in the week so I knew that my cholesterol had taken a significant nose dive!! What I did not know was how the rest of the numbers were trending! Were the bad numbers going lower and the good numbers climbing higher? Well, apparently so!! I forget what my triglycerides were but everything was trending the right way!

Then I told her how the physical therapist had said he wanted me to start building to harder intensity on my workouts and I was being careful to not overdo but at the same time, burn those unwanted calories!! I told her how my personal theory for hubby's heart attack is not genetics as they keep saying; but based on what I read in Dr. Oz's "You on a Diet" where he talks about inflammation from being at an unhealthy weight. Hubby was at an unhealthy weight for a very long time. It is only these past 18 months that he has lost the weight and started eating healthy along the way. With that kind of information, no wonder I am pushing myself to get to healthy weight and the sooner the better! The doctor then said how she loves it when her patients are so motivated. And as I was leaving the exam area, she leaned over and gave me a big bear hug and told me how proud she was of me and then she repeated how excited she was that I was so motivated! I replied that I just knew I was going to have a great day because I had started out my morning with a hug from my doctor!!

I go back in 3 months to follow up on my cholesterol and other numbers. How totally awesome would it be if I could have impressive numbers again!! Fingers are crossed but I know it takes more than crossed fingers to do this!! (Besides, they cramp up after being crossed for a while!!)

What a great blog. I love that your Dr. hugged you. You deserved it. You really have made some serious changes, and you've been a great influence and inspiration for your family, too.

Thanx for your comment about your background. I'm glad you're liking the new one. I'm sorry I didn't say something sooner, but as you saw in my last blog that you commented on, I haven't been too available for anything other than my own pain lately.

By my reaction, you'd have thought I won the lottery!!

Tuesday, August 18, 2009

OK, so I didn't win any money! But what I have accomplished is even more incredible and I am so proud of myself!! My previous fasting blood work was on June 20th and the results showed that my cholesterol had come down from a high of 261 a year or so ago. Two months ago, I was absolutely thrilled when my doctor told me that my cholesterol had come down to 199!

Last Saturday, I did another fasting blood test to check my cholesterol and other body parts as a certain medication I am on can be hard on the liver. The nurse called me today to tell me that all my blood work had come back in the normal range. Even tho I have a follow up visit coming up in the next few days, I couldn't help myself but to ask the nurse about my cholesterol. And that is when if you were anywhere near Northern Virginia this afternoon, your ear drums may have gotten blow out!! The nurse said it had come down to 174!!! Super impressive considering I am not on any cholesterol reducing medication as I have insisted I will do this on my own.

I am very excited that I am healing on the inside and becoming more and more healthy with each passing day, week, month!! And to help move this along even faster, I am on track with my physical therapy to get back into my 500 calorie workouts like I was doing before I blew my knee out and was making excellent progress back then (instead of my weight climbing up and up like it has over the summer!!)

So here's to grinding my own flaxseeds and sprinkling them in my yogurts, eating bananas with my lunch, strawberries with my dinner, and keeping my daily cholesterol intake under 200!! Pretty soon I am going to be the picture of health on the inside and out!!

Update on my Fleas and my knee

Saturday, August 15, 2009

Quick update on how things are going in the aftermath of the pre-exterminator cleanup and simultaneously getting slammed at work, how I am doing in physical therapy, and my plan (as well as an experiment) to get back into my workout routine. Note that I caught a mistake in the video when I describe my WiiFit workout and the "run". It is actually a very fast walk, which most definitely falls into the guidelines I have been given to get back into my workouts! Enjoy and let me know what you think of my very first video blog!

Didn't mean to drop off the face of the earth! But I'm back!!

Thursday, August 13, 2009

This has been the week of incredible work AND home stress. I have gotten by on about 4 hours of sleep for 2 nights in a row!! Yikes!!! But it looks like the intensity and causes of the stress are slowly ebbing away!

Without boring you about my job, I will just say that I have been putting in 10 hour days to stay on top of something that was thrown at me; but unfortunately, it was broke long before I caught the ball! But I am getting on top of the situation and my boss knows what a mess I am stuck in! Thankfully, he has been supportive.

But it has not really been the work that has been the cause of bulk of my stress!! It has been those pesky fleas that have taken over my life!! Huh? How did that happen? Well, two weeks ago last Monday; we took the cat to the vet to see what we could do about the fleas. She gave us liquid chicken-flavored prednisone to help calm his reaction to the flea bites. She also suggested a pet-friendly exterminator. The pet friendly exterminator came out on Monday and explained what we would have to do to get ready for treatment. The biggest problem was that we had to get everything off the floors. And he meant EVERYTHING!!! Well, that is fine and dandy for most people but remember; we are living like refugees. (Cue Tom Petty!) Not only do we have 20 years of belongings accumulated in our house, but anything that used to be in our basement is packed in the corners of the stairs, behind furniture, anywhere we could cram our stuff from the basement! We went out and bought more plastic bins and threw whatever we could into the bins and then stacked the bins on our beds, in the tubs, in the showers, anywhere we could move all the boxes and stuff. We did all that on Tuesday night until about midnight. Then we started back up again 5 hours later on Wednesday morning and finished clearing all the floors!! We let the exterminator in after locking the cat in the downstairs bathroom with his essentials and then stuffed a beach blanket into the crack of the door so none of the spray would come anywhere near him.

Between unpacking our stuff that we need, physical therapy, and working 4 more hours from home, it was yet again, bedtime after midnight and then back up at 5 this morning to go to work!! Needless to say, I really am exhausted and plan to be in bed about 90 minutes from now!

I am still finding the errant flea but there appears to be a significant decrease in the amount of fleas in my house. I will continue to treat the cat with Frontline Plus according to the schedule the vet told us to follow! Ever since we noticed that we had a flea problem, we have been trying to give the cat some level of comfort by combing him every few days and spraying the fleas in the comb with Windex. It makes them shiny but most important, it makes the fleas dead without leaving toxins in the cat's fur!! The exterminator will be coming back once a month for a total of 6 treatments! (But at least we will have more notice about clearing the floors!)

So that is the sad tale of why I have been out of touch with everyone. In the meantime, I leave you with a sweet picture of my always purring kitty! (Not much a kitty! He's 12 years old!!) He never goes outside so how he got fleas in the first place I will never know! But that would explain why the infestation got so out of control in our house!! And if the quantity of flea bites on my legs is any indicator of what has been going on for poor kitty, he really really really needed that prednisone!

Thanks for the idea of the windex to make the combed fleas die.
I recently found fleas on my totally indoor princess...Gracie was scratching and silly me, I thought it was dry skin. ....I've tried everything....
I do a TOTAL house (including furnature) vacuum and spray with ENFORCER every three days to help stop the flea cycle...and I just yesterday bought a flea comb. At first I wasn't certain as to what to do with the combed fleas...then I put some of the ENFORCER in the bottom of a paper cup and 'fry' the little suckers.
It is working.
After reading the other responses....I am wondering if I can count all this hard work in my CALORIE BURN?
Thanks for the windex tip.....I guess it's good for more than getting rid of pimples.
(remember My Big Fat Greek Wedding? LOL)

Did I tell you I'm loving that background pic?

I feel for you with the fleas. We had that problem years ago and it took over a month to get rid of them. If I remember correctly you said something about mice a couple months back and that would be my guess as to how poor kitty (and you) got them. In the meantime look on the bright side - your floors will have to stay clean for a while to accommodate the exterminator. I've been hearing scratching in our walls too so I'm hoping those little buggers aren't bringing me any presents I don't want!

Take care.

Oh You poor thing you did not need that!

You kitty is so cute. But of course I might be bias as he looks just like our cat.

I am allergic the flea bites and I tell you we went through the same thing. But we did not bring in any kind a pest person. We jus used the front line and the daily combine with windex or hot water and squished the pest in tissues.

We were told you can bring one flea in on your pants that and is all it takes. kind of stinks when the whole reason for an indoor pet is so there are no fleas. But I have now been using the Front line for two years and no more problems. SO even though you get rid of them keep using the stuff!! I do not use it in the winter but I do come spring and summer.

Get some sleep sweety and hang in there!!

Check out my new background picture!! Yes, it is time for a change!!

Sunday, August 09, 2009

I had already been thinking about this for a while but had not really felt the motivation to act on this thought. But then a dear Spark friend (CJROMB) suggested it was time to find a happier background picture.

Yes, we are still at a snail's pace slogging thru the legal system with our lawsuit against the builder that sunk my basement in 16 inches of mud. Yes, it will still be at least a year before there is any resolution! And yes, we are still living like refugees (cue Tom Petty in the background, please!) with our storage bin full of stuff and boxes and boxes and boxes and boxes and boxes crammed wherever we can squeeze them: living room, corners of stairs, hallways, you name it but not much in the basement!!

Since we finished the major part of the cleanup, I only go downstairs to work out, do laundry, print something off the main family computer, and to sigh a deep sigh when I see the remnants of the devastation. I do not watch TV because I cannot take being downstairs for any length of time. I will sometimes sit with hunny while he watches a NASCAR race or a sitcom; but I never stay for the full length of whatever he is watching. It is some crazy mental block I have!! And in case you were wondering, I keep up with my favorite TV shows either on DVD or if I can, stream them from the internet on my laptop.

So how did I go about choosing the new background picture? Let me tell you it was very difficult as there were challenging obstacles. First, no pictures of the house, either before or after the flood. Next, nothing from any family anythings as I cannot bear to look at any pictures that make me think about my son. I feel so betrayed by his actions these past 2 years that I actually put away my digital frame at work and no longer use the picture gallery as my screen saver. There is a wall of baby pictures in my bedroom that I cannot look at because the sigh is even heavier than the one heard whenever I go downstairs. (The nightmare continues as he goes to court for his misdemeanor pot and felony drug charges in 2 months.) I thought about using a picture of our sweet adorable cat but that would still eventually bring me back to my son!! Third, the picture could not make me sad so any of the volumes of beautiful pictures of the magnificent hummingbirds that used to visit my feeder would only make me sad as the woods that got torn down (that contributed to our flood) used to home our hummingbirds. Same thing with the beautiful snow landscape pictures off my deck.

After going thru loads of pictures and scans from old photo albums (long, tiring, on-going project but so worth it!!) I settled on a picture a friend of hunny's took at an Aerosmith concert at the Nissan Pavilion a few years ago. Their music has always made me happy! Probably even contributed to some of the hearing difficulties I have today but that is another story!! If that was not enough, Steven Tyler's cameo on "Two and a Half Men" was priceless!!! Even better, the poor man fell off the stage trying to entertain the crowd! How can you not love him? Besides, Joe Perry looks pretty good with his shirt open!! And best of all, no baggage with this picture makes it a great choice!!

FITTYTIF 8/10/2009 1:13PM

I am glad you decided to do a new background. I know you have been through alot and it is still an up hill battle you have to face.
Here is a little suggestion to hopefully help you more.
STOP THE BIG SIGHS. I know this sound harsh. But honey you got to do it and start turning what you can controll around.
Look at those baby pictures and remind your self of thoses good times with your son and hope and if you are religous pray that one day you will have that agin. But in the mean time remeber this is what he chose not you! It is not your fault. You did nothing wrong. So Look at those pictures and smile and remember him as he was and how you want him to be.

As for the basement. Okay is must be some what useable. You work out down there you have a tv down there What else can you do to make you smile again. I know you lost a lot of stuff and that hurts. Trust me I am a queen of stuff! But some times you have to look at things in a little perspective. Last year we nearly had to evactuate out house due to a fire storm. I remember looking around and thinking how sad I would be if this was all gone. But then I realized it is just stuff! and what is more important is we have our lives and family! I know your son if givinng you problems but you still have your hubby.

And as for the hummingbirds can you plant some flowers maybe to bring them back? and brighten your life?

I hope I do not sound harsh I mean to sound caring. I want you to be happy and I know it may not seem like you have a lot to be happy about but you do.
SO Put on some Areosmith and dance around and laugh not sigh!

With big hugs and love! Becuase I think you are great and deserve great things!!!

I totally hear you on the everything-reminds-you.

You know, you wonder what he's thinkin' right? Like where does he think this is going to go in say, 10, 15 years?? Is he ever going to be able to come back from some of the choices he's making? Want me to come there and smack him upside the head in court?

I don't suppose you need me ranting on your page about it, eh? But I sooo get where this trouble is gonna land him, and it's frustrating even from a distance to realize someone doesn't.

I can't imagine how YOU'RE feeling about it. Everything, everywhere must remind you, and I'm sorry about that.

Just remember...we are NOT our children. We gave them life, we did our best. They make their choices, but we have to live our lives in spite of that.

Hugs from here!!!
