The Big Numbers Game

According to the statistics, 60% of Americans are overweight! That means that the majority of us folks are overweight! I attended a meeting yesterday with 12 women - 8 of us were overweight. There were 9 of us sitting in the doctor's office, 6 of us were overweight. I am not a statistician but I get the picture. When I went to the grocery store, I noticed there are complete aisles devoted to chips, cookies, sodas and let's not leave out the aisles devoted to ice creams and frozen desserts. Right off the top I'm thinking, those are four isles I can skip. That's significant to me, someone who doesn't like to shop. I am grateful that I have never fancied sodas. So many to choose from, yet no significant nutritional value. What a waste of time. I have come to the conclusion that the other stuff (snacks) needs to be avoided though this was not always the case. Some words of advice, never ever go to the grocery store without a list. Just because it's on sale, doesn't mean you need to buy it! I am going to continue to count the numbers: people, calories, carbs, sugars, etc. Just look around and you'll see the numbers too!

    I always go into the store with a list. I definitely avoid the snack aisle unless purchasing popcorn. Have you ever noticed how many isles have unhealthy snack foods in them or on the end of the isles or when you are in line to buy. Lots its like the stores are out to get you. I always try to go to the store when I have just had a snack or a meal. It helps. emoticon

    Another rule is not to go grocery shopping when you're hungry!
And READ THE LABELS! Just because it says it's "natural" or "fat-free" doesn't necessarily mean it's good for you.

    Shopping without a list means you spend more money on things that are impulse buys and less money on a planned,sensible food plan. I always have my list and a few coupons, too!

Eating for something???

It is very hard to determine or differentiate between eating because your body is craving something, as in my stomach is still hungry or eating because I am actually feeling ill and may be coming down with something. Great! Now is not the time to come down with anything with the doom/gloom of swine lurking in the background. It is amazing to have a great workout day (I absolutely loved Julie's 24Dance class this morning) and slowly watch the gains wither away. All is not completely lost. I took the dogs out for a walk this evening and vowed to drink plenty of water for the remainder of my hours. It was very hard but I actually posted on my nutrition tracker (ha! some nutrition) all the things that I ate. Ok, almost all of the things. I haven't figured out where the home made pseudo-nachos fit in. Damn I bet those were a lot of calories. I'm going for the weekly average, forget the daily stuff. That is still looking ok. emoticon

    Hope you're feeling better soon. I'm a little freaked out about the swine flu too. I called my manicurist yesterday and told her to cancel my appointments for now - I want to wait until this flu thing settles down. Although she uses very good sanitation practices, she comes into contact with a lot of people (face-to-face) every day. She thinks I'm a crazy germaphobe and she's right.

Get better soon. I need you on the Chandler 5 lb challenge - to quote a line from Star Wars, "you're my only hope."
