Rose Parade and New Years Day

Saturday, January 01, 2011

We watch the Rose Parade every year, in fact we watch it over and over again all day. For those of you who don't live in S.CA, one of the local WB stations, repeats the parade all day long and then one more time the following weekend.
The great thing is you can stay up late, wake up late and still do things that you need to do all day. Catch the show in the middle, no problem, it starts over as soon as the parade ends. All day long, but with commercials on the repeats.

I went to the Rose Parade in my senior year in high school with my boyfriend, his older sister and her friends. It ended up raining during the night, was frigging cold and we were all wet and freezing. We only had the shell of a Toyota truck to climb into to get dry and try to sleep. Mine you there was 3 other girls in college with us (one being my boyfriends sister) and 2 other college age guys besides my boyfriend. So we had a total of 7 adults and believe me Toyota trucks were small back then, squashed into the back of that thing all night.
My boyfriend was over 6'4", the other guys were all built like football players and the girls including me were all over 5'5". Not much room to move around in or get comfortable.

During the night the rain stopped and we went out to Colorado Blvd. to watch the floats. I was so tired, and I thought they look so small in person, I am going to go back to the truck and sleep until the others get back. (I knew I could watch it on TV later). After a while, here comes another of the girls, then another, then my boyfriend and his sister, and finally the last two guys. We all decided that this was the stupidest thing we had ever done and couldn't really understand how some people do this every year. What was so funny about this was that my Mom did not want to let me go because I was still 17. So my boyfriends sister talked to her and assured her there would be no hankie pankie. All of us snuggled together for warmth. We all got a big kick on the way home, thinking that my Mom was totally clueless about what goes on at the parade. All of us were so darn cold that sex was the last thing on any of ours minds.

Took Phred for a walk today and he seems to be doing better. I kept him right next to me, made him sit at street corners and when other dogs came by I made him sit and tried to get him to control himself. He is doing better but a long way from breaking the bad habit of going crazy when he sees other dogs.

Made a nice ham dinner for the New Years but went over my calorie count with the pumpkin pie. Oh, well tomorrow is another day. I am doing 2 challenges this month so I should be able to get back on track.

Great story. I am not a fan of things which involve huge crowds, so I have never had the slightest desire to go the Parade in person. As you said, it is rerun so often there is no reason--and you can see it better on TV!

Glad Phred is leaning some control. Now if I could just get my two dogs to not freak out when they see other dogs.

Glad that you got to watch the Rose Parade. I enjoyed your story about the parade years ago. Mom's gotta luv 'em! Glad that your ham turned out good. I went over my calories today too but not too badly. Good luck with your challenges. Love ya, Dawn emoticon

Love the Rose Parade! The hub and I camped out once and that will probably be our last time! So freakin cold! If I ever go again I think I'll pay to sit in the bleacher seats.
And yes, I do love how KTLA has the parade running non-stop today.

I love the Rose parade too, but get so frustrated because they don't show most of the equestrian units!!! That is when they cut to a commercial or to other things going on. DARN IT!!! I want to see the horses!! Seems like it is getting worse every year. One GREAT thing!!! TCU's HORNED FROGS WON THE ROSE BOWL!!! That is Matt's favorite college team and has been for years, and my niece's ALMA MATER. It only has 9,000 students and was up against Wisconsin with like 50,000 students!! We are just thrilled, and you can bet the whole city of Fort Worth is celebrating!! Chris

I love the ROSE PARADE, the floats are just amazing! I love the one with the TRIBUTE to RONALD REAGAN today, so beautiful.
How do they do that with all those flowers? It just blows my mind! They are so detailed! Ham and pumpkin pie, two of my favorites, yum....yum..... emoticon

Just Hours From the New Year, 2011! Happy Happy to All!

Just wanted to let all my Sparks friends know how much I count on their encouragement and friendship.

NOW for the strange request, does anyone have have medical insurance with "Aetna". We have had the same insurance through my husbands Union for forever (Principal Life) and about 1 1/2 weeks ago we get these new insurance cards. My DH called a friend who is also with the same union and he told us we should have been notified back in Oct. for open enrollment period. We got nothing at all, so was a big surprise to us.

The one thing I am not sure about is how to order my medications now. We have used CVS/Caremark (and they have all of my information) through our former insurance, but there is nothing on this ID about ordering medications. We went on site but since the insurance doesn't become effective until midnight tonight, we could not find out any information. I plan to try and call on Monday.

We were able to see that my Rhuematologist and our dentist was on the list. We still only have a $10 co-pay for a office visit but I have no idea how much medication will cost at a walk-in pharmacy or if I can still use mail order through CVS/Caremark. SO if any one on Sparks has this insurance and would be willing to let me know how good they are, I would greatly appreciate.

Now for today, it was pretty darn cold for S.CA, I think we reached the mid 50's.
But the sun was out when I went to the market, used a light jacket, and actually didn't really need it. Later after I was home and had put the food away my son and I went bowling.

Bowling was pretty fun, wasn't my day today. I broke 100 every game but I was missing my spares and it was killing me. I had a coupon to bowl for 2 hrs. for $8.99 each and included shoe rental, so we got 7 games and part of another b/4 we got the time out sign. Frank my son always takes a while to warm up and only after he has a beer, he gets better and he beat me the last game. Really pretty funny.

Started watching "Dog Whisperer" to see if I could get any pointers to help crazy Phred be better walking. I use them all today while walking and he was much better behaved. I just got to remember to do it everyday. I also got a "Bark Off' for my husband for Christmas because Phred just goes nuts whenever someone comes to the door or the gardener's are here. I am not sure if it is working because there is no light to tell you it is on. You put a button and just hope for the best. I do think Phred wasn't as nutty yesterday when the gardeners came or maybe I was hoping he was more relaxed. Anyway BO says' it can take a couple of weeks, so we shall see or I am getting my money back. Walking today with Phred I made him stay at my side instead of pulling ahead and made him sit at the traffic lights. I did all the things the DW says to do and it seems to be working. This is one of my new goals for 2011, to try and get Phred the Wonder Dog under control when I walk him. Wish me luck!

Sorry I can't help you with the insurance question.
Consistency and a firm, no nonsense hand are the keys to getting Phred to behave and you both must do it equally. Good luck with it! Dog Whisperer is so good! My sister recorded episodes for me to watch once.
Happy New Year, all the best to you now and always!

A beautiful day to go to the dentist.

Tuesday, December 28, 2010

Woke up to another beautiful day, although we are expecting very cold weather tonight with another storm hitting around 2-3am n Wednesday morning.

I had a dental appointment today at 10am for cleaning, unfortunately I hadn't been since 2007 and I knew I had a problem with an old filling. I had the same problem in 2006, but I had waited too long to get it checked and the tooth cracked. I had to have my first root canal on my 51st birthday. I did not want to go through that again so as soon as I could I got an appointment with either of the dentists,
Dr. Tran. or Dr. Moses. I got Dr. Tran because the other doctor was on vacation in Palm Springs, Ca. I adore Dr. Moses who just happens to be Fergies (Black Eyed Peas) godfather, how cool is that.

I was right, the old filling (silver) was starting to decay underneath the tooth. That's what happens when your fillings get old. I have only 7 fillings in my whole mouth and I had gotten them when I was 13 and 15 yrs. old. If you have read my Sparks page I will 55 on the 21st March (which is my goal date).
I had the old silver removed from both bottom sides and the upper right, but at time the left side was still OK. Dr. Moses, told me at that time if that area started to give me problems or feel strange I should get my rear end into see him.

They had an appointment canceled, so I had the upper silver removed and new white put in its place. I also had a very small cavity that he wants to do tomorrow at 1pm. Because of medical problems and other medication I am on I have to pre-medicate an hour b/4 I go. My dentists always call in prescription for about 24 pills, (antibiotics), just to make sure I have them, in case I have to return for more dental work.

I do pretty good for someone with claustrophobia but after a while I find it hard to breath and get panicky, so that is why I am returning tomorrow. After that I went to the market on the way home and it was 1pm when I got home. Had some lunch and took Phred the Wonder Dog for a walk. I started to take down the Christmas decorations, then fixed dinner and finished up taking the ornaments off the tree, sweep up all the pine needles. I will be giving the house a good cleaning in the morning and then back to the dentist at 1pm.

Went over on my calories today, sort of bummed because I ate pretty good today. Lots of veggies and stuff. Oh well too much of a good thing, I guess.

Glad you caught that dental problem early! I had a root canal (my first) last year, and I am lucky that my dentist has a specialist that comes in one day a week to do root canals, that is all he does. I had almost NO PAIN!! It was amazing, but so expensive I don't EVER want another one!! I had every tooth I had ever had until I turned 56!! Now, I have lost a little less than half of them to problems. Stay healthy now!! emoticon

    Hi Teri,

How'd the trip to the dentist go? I'm such a wimp, the dentist has to put deadening gel on my gums until they get numb before the novicane. emoticon

Thanks for the updates on the weather in Southern California. Hope my house did't float away. emoticon Has there been any news about flooding in San Diego - maybe it hasn't been too bad down there?

Sorry that you're having to deal with dental issues, but glad that you're getting them sorted. Don't worry about going over the calories if you ate the right things. It's all about averages anyway. Sometimes I think it actually HELPS to go high to average out the lows. Bright blessings to you my friend. Good luck at the dentist tomorrow. Love, Dawn emoticon

Yearly goal 30,000 Exercise min., only 182 to go!

Monday, December 27, 2010

I have the rest of the week to get to my yearly goal of 30,000 exercise min. this year. I am sure, had I not been sick a good portion of Sept.& Oct. I would have reached my goal a few weeks ago. I will be happy to get past that number and I will increase my goal for 2011 to 35,000 exercise min.

I am also thinking about finding some charity walks to do in and around the OC area. I can do some jogging but I have never been a runner, don't even have the desire to run. I never get tired of walking for miles. I think this goes back to my childhood. The town I grew up in, was pretty small back in the days. If you wanted to go somewhere as a kid with your friends, you walked, rode your bike or road a horse. Being out in the fresh air, feeling the breeze and sun on your face, always brings a smile to me.
Anyway I will post my new goals on the first of January 2011 and see how much I go over my goals for 2010. Remember everyone just keep moving, drink your water and keep within your calorie range and the weight will come off. Slowly goes the turtle, so you can live a longer, healthier life!

I am so impressed! You set such a high goal for yourself and you met it, despite having been ill. I am sorry to say, I didn't make my exercise goal for 2010. I am going to set the same goal for 2011. I will make it!

Wishing you a happy and healthy New Year!

Oops, weather change again here in S.CA

Sunday, December 26, 2010

While yesterday was so beautiful, today woke to overcast and clouds. It started to rain again in some areas by late this afternoon and it has now started here at our home about 40 min. ago. Had a pretty quiet Christmas with just the DH & son. Open gifts about 11am, then took a shower and started Christmas dinner of duck w/orange sauce and other traditional food. Talked to my sister in NY, tried my other sister in San Diego no answer so left message, talked to my foster Jory this morning and then my daughter Samra this evening. Samra lived with Jory and his girlfriend Eve in AZ. They have just moved into their new home so have been busy moving. They went to Jory's aunts house last night for dinner.
Looks like we are getting some more storms which of course will be heading East from here in a few days. I know my Sparks friends who live in the mid West and East in some area's are already getting pounded by storms. So be aware there will be a lot more of the white stuff on the way. Please keep safe, warm and drive with care. emoticonTeri
