Another hot humid day. UCLA water loss

Tuesday, July 29, 2014

Another hot and humid day here in Anaheim. Got my early morning walk in starting once again at 7:15am.
This has been a strange few days around here. On Sunday up in Venice Beach in LA County they had a lightening strike at the beach. Since this is so rare here no one including the lifeguards told people to stay out of the water when the weather suddenly change and one bolt hit directly in the water. One young man was killed and 9 were taken to local hospitals. Many people were knocked out and some people who were playing volley ball were knocked to the ground.
Then today in the middle of this drought, a main 30 inch water main broke on Sunset Blvd. right next to UCLA & Marymount College. It was reported around 3:25pm and Sunset Blvd. will most likely be closed for several months. It was just lucky that no one happened to be driving over that spot at that moment. It was releasing 35,000 to 75,000 gals a min per reports.
That street is a main East/West for many people who don't want to take the 10 Fwy from downtown LA west to the beach. It is always busy in the morning & evening, so just lucky it didn't happen a couple of hours later. I use to work at UCLA back in the mid to late 1970's, so this was of some interest to me.
Now all the people in LA will really have to conserve water. DWP already is so expensive compared to what we pay here in Anaheim. I think this may affect all of LA & Orange Counties. The water was still coming out 3 hours later.
That's about it for now. Everyone keep cool or warm, depending on where you live.

Oh, how tragic!! Both of your stories! If I hear thunder I get away from the water! I heard that if you hear thunder, even if you can't see any lightening, you are still within striking range! So sad! Try to stay cool and congrats on keeping up with your walking!

Heard about that too and the one reason that the people on the sand got knocked out is because it has water in it too. Water will carry electric easily to any place that has contact to some thing or someone.
Sorry to hear of the loss of life to that young man emoticon

We heard about the lightening on the news. So sad for the young man and those injured. We do have lightening strikes here and not too rare. A few yrs. ago when the US Open was played in Hazelton Golf course and people ran for the trees with a sudden rain, they were hit and one died there. I hope the heat lets up soon for you and rain comes your way!! It is so needed.

Heat up and still doing my early morning walks. Metropolis!

Sunday, July 27, 2014

So was out of the house by 7:15 am this morning, and it was pretty nice with a slight breeze. Stopped by CVS to pick up a script near the end of the walk. Then it got very hot again.
DVR'd a classic silent movie "Metropolis" on TCM the other day. Started to watch it, got about half way through and just couldn't keep my eyes open. I think the music may have put me to sleep, but the movie is very good. I am pretty sure I saw this years ago where our local Parks & Recs use to show old movies for .25 cents on a projector. Things like "King Kong" and this movie when I was a pre-teen during the late 1960's.
Other than that all is going great. Jeff goes back to work in about a week or so, and we should have the bedroom done or close to done by then. Currently Jeff is sleeping on his bed in the living room.

Good that you can get out early with the heat you have been having out there, Teri. We had a beautiful day today as well as yesterday! I don't recall ever seeing Metropolis but then there aren't many I have seen unless I watch a movie on dish. Enjoy the week and hope Jeff doesn't mind sleeping in the LR! :-)

Warm to hot! Me and Loretta Sanchez

Tuesday, July 22, 2014

So it has been pretty warm here and today it went over 95 degrees. For the last couple of days I haven't felt up to par. Yesterday I didn't do much but lay a round because my stomach was giving me problems (a lot of bathroom runs). I did get up and walk today but much shorter than normal, maybe a couple of miles. Just taking it easy.

So I got the email with the picture of me and our Congress woman Loretta Sanchez. I was dressed for the market, not to meet up with one of our representatives. Wish I was dressed up a bit more but no, just me and my Nirvana shirt. lol

Most people dress casual for shopping, no worries! Looking fabulous! Loretta sure looks young for a congress woman! Good on her!
Hope you feel better soon! I just got over the worst stomach upset ever :-(

I dress for comfort too when shopping. I guess I feel if I meet with someone known, well it will have to be and not worry about it. I bet you had an interesting conversation.

How things are going here.

Thursday, July 17, 2014

Saw my Rheumy last Thursday and was down another 10 pounds from 195.4 to 185.2. Very happy with that since I was stuck for so long a just above 200 pounds. My pro-times have been perfect for the last couple of months, which means I only have to have the blood work done once a month. Haven't checked online to see how my other blood work was but will either hear from the doctor or check this weekend.
Other news is Franks car we helped him purchased about 6 months ago for $3500 took a dive to car heaven. Jeff decided no more used cars and went to his credit union to co-sign for a used car. The approval was for $15,000. Think our son could find any good used car for under that amount @Enterprise, Hertz, CarMax or any number of car dealerships. Nooo, he only wants a Honda Fit, which he can barely fit into. I went with them after a week and tried to sit in one with the sit all the way back and still had to bend my knees a little bit. My son is 6'1".
We can not convince him this is not the car for him. Found a couple of great used cars, he looked at but only because we asked him too. One was a rag-top Chrysler Touring car that was 2 yrs old with 35, 000 miles on it. A real chick magnet, nope not interested. The other car I found was a 1 yr old Hyundai with 10,000 miles and still smelled new and perfect condition. So much more car, son looked at it again because we asked. Mileage was only a couple of miles less than the fit, but he would have none of it. I even said I would buy either one of them from him in 2-3 yrs., when I plan on purchasing a good used car. No luck.
So Jeff started looking at the difference between a new one and used one, only a couple 1000 dollars. So Jeff contacts the credit union, they raise the limit to $18,000. I am a bit pissed off. Frank only works part time and barely makes $400 a month after taxes. How is he going to pay for the car, insurance and gas on that. I am pretty sure the payments are going to be $250+ a month, who knows on full insurance but I figure around $200+ a month. Lets see he now has no money for gas or anything else. Hubby won't listen, it will all be find. Yeah cause we will be making the payments.
I already told him if Frank got a new car I would be really upset because when we talked about me getting a new car (getting rid of my Corvette because I am getting too old for it to be comfortable anymore), and I was talking about 2-3 yrs down the road. Jeff said "No". I can see this not turning out good and us taking over a car neither one of us wants. I think Jeff should have told him, your limit is $15,000 with taxes, so find something. Nope. He thinks this will make him find another job. Yeah right, if Dad is going to cover for him, I don't see him feeling the need to do that. Now I must say that my son has mild Asbergers Syndrome and OCD, so he gets stuck on something and nothing is going to change his mine. I just wish Jeff has put his foot down and told him, yeah this is what you can afford and we are not going over.

So other than that little problem things are going again on the rest of the house remodel. They have removed the old flooring from the one bedroom and done some other stuff. So out of here for now. xo

emoticon emoticon on the weight loss!
Oh my! That is a pile of money for a used car!! But getting a kid on a part time job a new one? I have to agree you are getting the short end of the stick here. Weird that such a tiny car would cost so much, wonder what on Earth the big guy sees in it??? Not teaching him any responsibility what so ever. I hope this turns out somehow..
I hope your weather is reasonable and you can get out and enjoy walks!

Congratulations on the 10 pounds lost! That is super! What a great job, Teri!
I totally agree with YOU on the car deal. The limit should be set and held to that, and if son doesn't make the payment, Mom and Dad sell the car immediately and pay off the debt. emoticon

Hope everyone had a safe & sane holiday.

We had our 29th wedding anniversary on the 29th. lol Jeff had to work and I got another migraine. My daughter Samra and her guy Carl came out from Arizona for the weekend. They have been together 3+ years and Carl said they were thinking about getting married possible next year sometime. They are thinking of buying a house and it protects them both along with the tax breaks for those that are married. We took the whole family out for a nice dinner to celebrate Franks 28th birthday on 7/3. Frank worked the evening of 7/4. State wages for min. went up to $9 on 7/1, which makes my son happy. Weather turned very warm over the weekend. I did walk on the morning of the 3rd. but the weather over the weekend was close to 100 most days and I was sleeping in until 7:30am and it would already be over 80 degrees.
I can not get my Sparks tracker to work, the dongle won't turn green and when I refresh the device only the top two buttons turn green, internet OK but Data Connection is not. I did what the help site said to do, without any luck. I emailed support and sent them serial numbers for both the tracker & dongle and hope for the best. I sure hope this thing starts working because I will lose out on a bunch of miles as I did at least 5+ on the 3rd.

Suspect your Sparks tracker issue has resolved. I read they are updating.

Congrats on the anniversary. Perhaps you two can do something big together next year for your 30th?? Hope so. Wishing you migraine-free days.

Glad you enjoyed some family time! Those temperature are too hot to do anything with outdoors! Hope it eases up for you soon!
I spent the weekend helping with our garage sale. It was slow sales. No one wants collectables anymore. Fortunately, my sister came in and made it more interesting and we had more fun and went greenhouse shopping and out for lunch, and also had Chinese takeout and as a result of all the sodium, my weight is up :(
Mom's lovely garden got hammered by heavy rain mixed with hail and she is so frantically trying to get it off the ground and looking good for the garden tour on the 27th..

As far as the SPAT, our coach put out a memo that the company that they have storing the data has been off line so all of us are in the same boat. I even took up some of my precious data before I sent an email and the note came out the next day that it should be back up & running in 24-48 hrs. That's several days ago & we are still waiting. Coach Jen said up dates will be on the SparkPeople Tracking team. She did say that we won't lose any data and it will all download when they come back on line. I really wonder what the problem is as it sure has been a long time!!!!!

Glad you had a good weekend. We enjoyed it by doing nothing! Got back at some cleaning today. Had a powerful storm go through this afternoon and when it got past us, they put out tornado warnings (we are on the SW corner of the Cities, and the tornado was on the SE corner. Too close for comfort but no damage just tree branches. It too all of 30 mins. to get 1.6" rain and 60 MPH winds.
