Tied for week 2 & week 3 paleo challenge

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

Week one I was 8th
Week two I tied for 1st (prize: wrist wraps)
Week three I tied for 1st (prize: crossfit/gym tshirt)

Overall standings after week 3 I'm sitting in 3rd. Five points behind #1, two points behind #2.

Week 4 ended yesterday but we won't get the results until next week since it takes so long to tally up points. I honestly don't think I can win 1st or 2nd overall since the #2 person is the one I've tied for 2 weeks for first. And the #1 person is super strict. But the top 10 still get prizes at the end, (#1 gets $600 in cash that we all put in at the beginning) so that's still good I guess.

That would be an incentive for many. Not only to lose weight, but to win the money.

How do you like paleo?

I should only eat 900-1200 calories a day?

Monday, May 21, 2012

I've been stuck gaining & losing the same five pounds for five months. I've changed up what I eat, eaten more, eaten less, worked out more, worked out less and the same 5 pounds is gained or lost.

I should only eat 900-1200 calories a day. That's what the doctor told me today.

It seems like that it such a little amount. Especially since I burn 2500-4000 calories a week in exercise alone. emoticon

I guess I thought 1200 was the bare minimum.

I suppose I'll give it a try after this weekend (we're branding this weekend)...

What happened? Did you try it? Did you decide to go in a different direction? Being stuck in a plateau is really frustrating! Especially because you're working SO HARD!!! Keep the faith! Sending positive thoughts your way!

I would never go under 1200 for more than maybe a day here and there. Switch up your routine. Don't eat the same number of calories every day and don't do the same exercise routine every day. Your body gets used to routine and sets itself accordingly. It sounds like you've reached a set point weight and it will take something different in your routine to shake it up.
People who eat lower calories in turn lower the metabolism and then when they try to eat higher calories they gain weight. I saw a couple of comments about people eating very low calorie diets and not being able to eat more without a gain. The fix for that is to move more and eat more. Once the body becomes used to getting the food it needs to survive it will let loose of some of the fat.
Eating too little is as bad as eating too much. There is a fine line and everybody is different as to what the line is.
Unfortunately most of our Drs are not very well educated in the nutrition field.
Good luck to you and I hope you find your fix.

I seem to have hit a sort of plateau with the same 2-3 pounds fluctuating. Some of this is on my lack of commitment. Some of it is just making me crazy! lol I can tell you that the clinic that I go to that does my body composition profile is a weight loss clinic and that they sometimes put people on calorie restrictions that are that low. I thought it was crazy too, but it seems that it works for some people for a short period of time.

I recently read an article about carbs keeping our insulin levels high, stopping fat loss. I have decided that for two consecutive days per week, I am dropping my calories to 1200 per day, with only 55 grams of carbs. The day after this I have a "high" calorie day of 1700 and then I go back to my 1500 cals per day. Maybe try rearranging your micronutrients, as well? This is my first week of this, so I can't tell you how it is going yet. I "gained" 3.5lbs the other day, even though I thought I was doing decently, and I can't seem to drop it! lol

Good luck to you! I am sure you'll find something that works for you and your body!

If weight lost and exercise were a perfect science, there would be no overweight people. Since it is not perfect, you have to find what is right for you. But in trying to find what is right for you, try keeping a journal to document what is successful or not.

If I follow the food tracker's advice of EATING Calories: 2,850 - 3,200, I'm gaining weight. Here are the number of calories I have had so far this past week :

I'm not gaining weight, not losing but I have tried the recommended calorie intake and it is just too much food for me.
I walk 3 miles every morning and do 20 miles on a stationary bike.

Factors that contribute to this stalemate in my opinion are:
My age , I'm 65, my metabolism is slowing down.
The intensity of my workout is not there because of a hip and back problem.
I was doing 20 miles on the bike in 60 minutes but with injury, I now do the same distance but in 90 minutes.
I sit a a desk all day long and I feel the lack of movement help to slow down my metabolism as well.

I say experiment to find what works for you. There is no one plan that fits all.
But keep the journal so you can identify what works and what you need to do next.
I wish you well.

SUCH terrible advice! From a DOCTOR? Geez. 900 is too low and it's not something you can maintain forever. Remember, if you can't do it for the rest of your life it's not a solution.

That doesn't sound right. You need to eat MORE if you're burning that much. Second opinion time.

IAMAHAPPYGIRL 5/22/2012 7:27AM

Don't do it! 900 calories is so dangerous for your body. Your doctor should know better. You're right, never below 1200. You want your body to go into starvation? There's no way you can get all the vitamins and nutrients your body needs on that. Much less energy. I think you need a second opinion!

I'm in the same boat... I exercise for about 7 hours a week and I have gone up and down the same 5 pounds since 2010!
My doctor suggested the same thing for me. I tried it in January for about 5 weeks and lost 2 pounds, which I have since gained back when I quit eating so few calories. (It made me so tired!)
I felt really discouraged until my doctor told me about another patient who gained weight every time she ate more than 800 calories a day! I guess things could be worse...

I'm in a similar boat and just reduced my target calories to keep under 1000 on most days. If I can ever get my metabolism to rev I'll add a few back and see what happens. I, too, have been losing and gaining the same 5 pounds for months. Gotta get serious as I know this weight is not healthy to carry around with me. Good luck!

Tire flipping & Triathlon

Sunday, May 20, 2012

First off...I'm not the one that ran the triathlon.

Friday was "WOD makeup day" at the gym. You could do any of the workouts from earlier in the week or work on skills. There was only six of us that day. I wanted to do Thursday's workout which was"
400 m run
Three rounds of:
-25 tire flips
-10 pistols (5 on each leg)
-20 dumbell snatches
200 m lunge
200 m run

It was a tough workout! The tire flips were fun, but my biceps and forearms are REALLY sore yesterday and today. I flipped a tractor tire. Those are big and heavy! And the tops of my thighs are very sore from the lunges. Ow ow ow.

One of my crossfit classmates did a triathlon yesterday. Tom's before and after pics are hanging up at our gym and I never would have recognized him before. He used to be very overweight and out of shape. Now he looks amazing! It's taken a lot of hard work for him and Jess (our trainer).

Jess, her partner Mindy, their daughter, myself and two other crossfit people came to support him. Jess & Mindy brought their puppies so that was pretty fun during the bike race where we were just standing around.

The triathlon consisted of 1000 yard swim, 15 mile bike ride and 3.1 mile run. Tom wanted to finish it in 90 minutes. He did it in 82!!! He was so happy, it was such a great thing to see. I'm so glad we came out to support him. :)

I have been trying to find a tire, to no avail! I live in farm country. You would think that they would be everywhere around here! In fact, I felt a bit bad after, but my husband came home yesterday and told me he had a gift for me. I got all excited and asked if it was a tractor tire. I could feel the disappointment cross my face as he handed me a box that was obviously jewelry and I made a comment about how a tractor tire wouldn't have fit in it! lol I think that there may be something wrong with me!!

I would LOVE to give this a shot and it seems as if it would be a fun workout!

Well done on doing it yourself. Everyone speaks as if it is a very tough workout!

Sounds like a tough workout. Yep, flipping tires would be a workout.

The new scale didn't pan out. The picture on the box looked fine, but inside it was pretty light. Both of us weight more on it than on the good one we have. Will stick with what we have for now.

No shooting today, went to the club and it was cold (50's), very windy and starting to rain. Wimped out and ran errands. Kicking back with a movie now.

Only a brother can make you feel this good.

Friday, May 18, 2012

I'll admit it. Last night I was getting scared to get on the scale in the morning. Who could blame me? Two previous weeks of eating & working out perfectly and a gain each time.

I was watching TV with my borderline autistic brother, Sam, last night. I got up to turn on the fan and he turned to me and said "Acacia (my real name), you are looking slimmer." Now, anyone that works with autistic kids knows they don't make comments like this ever. I have never ever heard him say this to anyone. It made me feel AMAZING. Thank you, Sam. I love him.

Got on the scale this morning and I'm down 2.9 pounds! HELL YEAH! Thank you everyone for the support the last two weeks - it's been tough. I'm hoping all this muscle I'm getting from crossfit is now doing it's job on my metabolism.

Quick update on other things since I've been MIA in the blog sections...

Sam finished his classes at the college. We're looking for a job for him in Powell or Cody. Until we get him a job (and an apartment after that), he's staying with me. He had an interview at Walmart and at the Buffalo Bill HIstorical Center yesterday. I'm hoping he gets the museum job because that's a pretty cool place.

Brandon finished Grad school with a 4.0! What a smart guy! He was here for a few days and we went to Billings and got him a suit - jacket, vest, shirt & tie (except the pants since he'll be wearing jeans) for the wedding. It was his idea and let me tell you guys...he looks SO hot! Wow.

Brandon applied for a job in Gillette (an hour from my parent's WY ranch & where I grew up) and we should hear back from that in the next two weeks. He also applied for a job in Miles City, MT. Not too far away from home, and I like Montana. I'm starting to get stressed about where we're going to go, but I'm not going to project that onto him because I'm sure he's just as worried if not more than me.
Everyone have a wonderful weekend - supposed to be cool and rainy here.

I don't understand. This is my second week of being absolutely PERFECT with paleo and exercise and I GAINED. AGAIN.

+0.4 pounds

I don't know what to do. I am doing EVERYTHING right. Burning 2500 a week calories through exercise and strength training and eating a strict paleo diet. This is the second week in a row this has happened. Last week it was +0.7 pounds.

I'm so upset that I'm close to tears.

Talked to my trainer. Jess says to stick with it the three and a half more weeks we have left. She said it may take a few more weeks for things to go the way I want. I'm going to trust her and not weigh in for a few more weeks. It's going to be very hard.

How much water are you drinking? Are you taking other measurements?
Do you track your food so that you know that you are not eating too little?
My first thought is that you are gaining muscles and therefore weight.
Still, keep going. When I started to eat healthier before and started exercising it took me a few weeks to start losing weight and after that I lost it at a steady pace.
Don't give up!
