Is that real food?

The other day, my daughter asked me to pick up pizza from Domino's for her and her family while I was in town. So, I decided to pick up a pizza from my husband and me also. To make as long boring story short, about a half hour after I am finished eating, my daughter calls and asks me if I enjoyed eating "Asian hair". It turns out she was curious as to what she was eating and discovered one of the ingredients in the crust originated from hair. My son-in-law tried to make it seem not so bad and tell me that maybe they used horse hair instead of human hair.

Needless, to say, I was totally grossed out. I am not sure what happened to the leftover pizza, but I know that I did not eat it.

I was going through my emails the other day and came upon a link to Mike Adams' page and I started following links so I am not sure where this quote comes from exactly but it stated,

"People will eat anything that is marketed to them as food."

That is so true; just look at the items on 2/3 of the shelves in the grocery store. The majority of the "stuff" that they call food is not really food, but a food-like substance.

So, my goal for April is to eat food, real food. I am going to read labels on everything packaged that I buy and if I figure a thrid grader cannot read the list of ingredients, then it will be put back on the shelf. That and the 5-ingredient rule.

I think following those two rules will help me focus on eat real food.

    Thanks for the heads-up about the Domino's crust. Makes me appreciate the couple of legitimately vegan pizza places around here just that much more.

Sounds like you'd have been better off eating the box, lol.

    Okay, that seriously grossed me out! I always feel much better when I eat whole foods and limited processed food. I find now that when I read ingredients and the list is long I put it back. Good for you!

  You are so right. It's a shame that when we try to eat out with friends, we seem to have more non-foods to choose from than real foods

    That is so true. Ever since they started talking about pink slime, I haven't been able to even look at hamburger. It is really disgusting what we eat. I'm going to have to look into that pizza crust. That's just gross!

6 pounds gone!

I finally got rid of those peanut buster parfaits I was wearing since February. and I feel so much better. As a matter of fact, the last one I had tasted nasty; and I wondered why I craved it in the first place.

My training for the half marathon is still on schedule, a little over a month to go now. I have a 12.5 mile run scheduled for this weekend. I am not sure where I am going to run. I ususally run near my home but the farmers are working in the fields now and putting down manure - it smells so bad. I got nauseous on my last run. I tried running the other direction through the woods, but got paranoid when I think I came too close to a skunk.

It seems like I an running slower since I started to train for the half marathon and using the walk/run method. It seemed like I could not run more than 2 minutes at a time. So, My last run, I decided to see If I could go the 5k distance. I did it (although I stopped for a few seconds because I saw a critter in the woods. It was just a deer, so I continued on. I worry about meeting a wolf or bear on my run). MY time was actually a minute slower jogging the distance without the walk breaks. But just knowing i could still do was reassuring.

After my half marathon, I am going to do running mate media's Fastest 5k program again.

    Congrats on beating the pb parfaits! emoticon I am planning on starting to run soon so need to learn to train. My husband has been running for years so will help me and it will be something we can do together, which motivates me. We're in the suburbs so I feel pretty safe from wildlife here. Hope you can enjoy your outdoors runs more soon.

    Carb up gal! 80/10/10 approach is the best for runners and all athletes, and all us non-athletes alike. Eat bananas before and after your run. Drink a green smoothie each day. Make certain you have the fuel to burn that much fire.

MY half marathon training - 11 miler

WOW! I actually did an 11 miler over the weekend. The weather was great for running, but the roads were still icey and/or slushy in some areas. My route was an out and back and then a loop; so, i went over a essection of the road three times. The first pass, it was all ice and I had to walk carefully. The second pass some of the ice melted where the tires tracks were and I was able to have steady footing but it was muddy. The third pass ( about 2 hours and 15 minutes later) I was amazed at how much of the ice and snow had melted.

Hungry for change

There will be a free online premiere March 21 - 31 and I cannot wait to watch it. The preview has peaked my interest. One thing that was stated was that we are no longer eating food but food-like substances. I believe that is true if one is eating a lot of processed foods. I am convinced the evidence is in the food ingredients listed on the packages.

These past few days I have been getting a new mind set and I am ready to get back on track and eat real food, not some food-like substance that has lots of stuff added to it to make it look and taste better. I am finding that when I eat those "treats" that they do not really taste good any more. I ate some of those Girl Scout peanut butter patties and afterwards, I felt like I ate a bunch of lard and wax. It was not very tasty at all. Kind of makes me wonder if, for the majority of the population, that eating fast food and overprocessed, sugar laden and fatty foods dulls the tastes buds.

Yeah, I am hungry for change...

    After two weeks, your taste buds will adjust and you'll be able to enjoy the real taste of real food. processed foods got us into this mess of the most obese generations ever and avoiding them is a great way to get back to the basics (pun intended)!

    It's interesting how our taste changes as we make healthy changes. I used to love french fries from anywhere but now they are just too greasy for me. This looks like a really great program. I'm also signed up to watch it.

    I agree with your comment on taste buds...I have found,after eliminating sugars(for the most part) and eating pretty clean most of the time..veggies taste great without alot of stuff on them. I can taste the 'goodness' and don't need dips for them. I ate fish at McD's last night-hada stomach ache almost immediately-BLECH!!!

It's been awhile since I blogged. I have been busy with school work. February is the month the Dairy Queeens reopen for the season here. I found myself going by and getting that peanut buster parfait again and again and again.

Then I started thinking of the cost. One of those parfaits costs the same as a bag of apples. Now, it is back to the "I can't afford to eat healthy" argument. One apple will satisfy my hunger and in that bag, I'll get a lot more opportunity to have another one for a lot less calories.

No excuses! Just like the Biggest Loser theme this season, I am going to start a personal challenge with no excuses and give myself no excuse to eating junk food. Since my environment is full of temptation, I am going to start with a one week challenge.

    Yes the bag ofg apples will go a lot futher than one peanut buster parfait with all the calories. Once in awhile I see no harm in treating our self; but looks like you have decided to buy the apples-----good job.

    Dairy Queen opens in February there? Where do you live, on the surface of he sun?? We do not have one here, but about 55 miles from here, it closes in September, re-opens again in May! We make ice cream from all the snow on the ground!!! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

    Good for you!!!! I also look at goodies like that in the $$ sense but usually in the 'calories affordable' version. I can't afford that many calories-it NEVER tastes as good as thin feels-NEVER!!!(well, okay,that's stretching,once in a rare time is okay)
