Today celebrates my 2nd anniversary with Sparks! I've lost (and kept off) 80 lbs., had open heart surgery earlier this year. Feeling so much better now. I actually joined a local gym, go to the pool at least 5 days a week. Hoping to start using some of the equipment soon.
I want to thank each and everyone of you who has encouraged me , motivated me, given me a kick in the butt when I needed it! What wonderful friends I have made!
I still have a long way to go, but slowly and surely I will get there. I will never, ever, ever give up!

If I could give you diamonds
for each tear you cried for me.
if I could five you sapphires
for each truth you've helped me see.
If I could give you rubies
for the heartache that you've known
If I could give you pearls
for the wisdom that you've shown.
Then you'll have a treasure, mother,
that would mount up to the skies
That would almost match
the sparkle in your kind and loving eyes.
But I have no pearls, no diamonds,
As I'm sure you're well aware
So I'll give you gifts more precious
My devotion, love and care.

I know this has been a long time coming, but I have so little energy these days (pretty normal after heart surgery Iím told).
Surgery (replacement of aortic valve) went much smoother than my doc ever expected. No complications whatsoever! What great news! However, 2 days after surgery I had complications from the narcotics I was given, had a build up of carbon dioxide, etc., and was pretty much ďout of itĒ for 5-6 days. No pain meds work for me, so I was screaming, moaning, talking nonsense, etc. Iím told Iím lucky I donít remember any of this! There was a time when my docs and nurses wondered if Iíd ever pull through. Finally, I turned the corner and made remarkable progress.
I was sent home 2 weeks ago, much quicker than ever expected. Iíve had many challenges being at home, but Iím managing okay. I see slight progress every day, and know it wonít be too long (probably 2 months) before Iím my old self again. The good news is that Iíve lost 21 lbs. since coming home. Iím only 1.7 lbs. from my lowest Spark weight! Hooray!
My heartfelt thanks goes out to my son who came up from GA to spend a week with me. He is a neurosurgical PA and made sure his mama had the best care! After he went home, he called at least 2-3 times a day for updates. I know how excited he was when I first called him. He knew his mama was back to her old self! My husband made the trip to & from the hospital (almost 3 hours) every single day. Most of the time I didnít even know he was there. He fed me, etc. Since Iíve been home, my brother has been with me almost 24/7. If he hadnít been here, I wouldnít have been able to be at home. What a family I have!
I cannot thank enough each and every one of you who kept me in your thoughts and prayers, emailed or called my husband or son, posted messages on my Spark page, gave me numerous goodies, sent cards, etc. The outpouring of support and love was phenomenal! I thank you from the bottom of my heart! Iíve always believed in the power of prayer. It certainly is a miracle that I am here today!

As many of you know, Iíve been dealing with aortic stenosis for the past 2 years. My surgeon said it was time for surgery this fall, but I refused as my sonís wedding was in October (in GA), and I was going to be there no matter what! Mission accomplished :)
I had another check-up in December, and my surgeon said I really couldnít put surgery off any longer. SoÖon Wednesday (Jan. 12), I will be having open heart surgery (valve replacement). My aortic valve has calcium build-up of a 75 year old. Iím nowhere near that age. No one knows why, just that itís time for me to get a new valve. Will I ever be able to eat pork again? (Yes, Iím getting a pig valve.)
I am a high risk for surgery because of health complications. My surgeon is sure I will come through surgery okay, but my recovery will most likely be a very long oneÖweeks, perhaps months. (I had arthroscopic knee surgery in 2000 and havenít been very mobile since.)
My son is coming from GA today. He was lucky enough to change his plans and leave Atlanta before the big snow/ice storm that is coming tonight. Iím so grateful that he will be with me. He is my rock.
Needless to say, I will be away from Sparks for some time. Iím certainly going to miss everyone, but look forward to coming back healthier!Watch for updates on my Spark page. DDOORN hopefully will remember to post now and again. When I go to rehab, Iím hoping to take my netbook with me, so I can be in touch.
Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers. Thanks, Spark friends!
