We must be thankful for...

Friday, February 26, 2010

We must be thankful for the offer and willingness to help, not the outcome.
We must be thankful for the challenges, not just the successes,
We must be thankful for the spirited debate, not just the resolution,
We must be thankful for the child that tries to cheer us up when we are down and the child that tries to help another child, not just the child that does his/her chores,
We must be thankful not just for what the Creator has done, but what he/she hasn't done,
We must be thankful for our trails and tribulations, not just our glorious victories,
We must be thankful for the clothes on our back, and not ungrateful for the style they lack.
We must be thankful for the $10 we might have today that we didn't have yesterday, and let go of the fact that we did not get the thousand we wanted,
We must be thankful for the hug our loved one gave to us, although they did not say they loved us,
We must be thankful for the meal we had today, and not dwell on the one we might have dreamed of,
We must be thankful for the job we have now, not just the one we might get or wished we had,
We must be thankful for that friend that is with us and supports us, not just the best friend that isn't there,
We must be thankful for the survivors of natural catastrophes, and be thankful for the memory of those we might have lost,
We must be thankful for all things.

Very thoughtful reminders of gratitude in living. Sometimes the simple life is not as unrewarding as it may appear to some. I have found some comfort in it. Though occasionally my wants get out of check. Overall, life is not so bad. There may be bumps in the road but there is sooo much to be grateful for. Maybe, instead of thinking glass half empty when the going gets tough, I need to remember what makes the glass half full again. Many thanks for your lovely post. Have a wonderful evening. Be blessed, Karen

There's so much to be thankful for!

Tuesday, February 23, 2010

A Spark friend posted a link in her blog today to this song on YouTube. The lyrics are so powerful, I wanted to share them.

Some days we forget to look around us
Some days we can't see the joy that surrounds us
So caught up inside ourselves
We take when we should give

So for tonight we pray for
What we know can be
And on this day we hope for
What we still can't see

It's up to us to be the change
And even though we all can still do more
There's so much to be thankful for

Look beyond ourselves, there's so much sorrow
It's way too late to say, “I'll cry tomorrow”
Each of us must find our truth
We're so long overdue

So for tonight we pray for
What we know can be
And every day we hope for
What we still can't see

It's up to us to be the change
And even though we all can still do more
There's so much to be thankful for

Even with our differences
There is a place we're all connected
Each of us can find each others love

So for tonight we pray for
What we know can be
And on this day we hope for
What we still can't see

It's up to us to be the change
And even though this world needs so much more
There's so much to be thankful for

What are you thankful for today? Take a few moments to write down your answers and reflect on them.

I am thankful for many things; life itself, my two kitties, my sisters, my friends here on Spark, having a job, my health and my Mom who will be 93 in May! Can you believe that? Thanks for a reflective poem...sometimes I forget my many blessings.

Yes, it is really easy to get so caught up in ourselves that we forget to look outward, so easy to dwell on the negative so exclusively that we miss all the good things. I am thankful for so much today ~ for family who are all in reasonably good health; for my job; for my little house; for an automobile that passed inspection (and hasn't been recalled yet!); for my computer, which allows me to connect with so many friends (and to play the, ahem, occasional computer game); for my cat, who is warm and nice to snuggle with; for my next-door neighbor and her humorous emails; for the fact that the Olympics ladies' figure skating is on TV tonight; that for today my bills are paid...so many, many things!

Practice gratitude. It is life-changing!

Today, I am focusing still on what is wrong with me. So, close to visiting the inpatient end of treatment that I am unclear on my focus. This wasn't my first reminder of gratitude today. I wish I could get my head untwisted. I don't really know what to do anymore.

Don't Quit!

Monday, February 22, 2010

Don't Quit

When you've eaten too much and you can't write it down,
And you feel like the biggest failure in town.
When you want to give up just because you gave in,
and forget all about being healthy and thin.
So What! You went over your points a bit,
It's your next move that counts . . . So don't you quit!
It's a moment of truth, it's an attitude change.
It's learning the skills to get back in your range.
It's telling yourself, "You've done great up till now.
You can take on this challenge and beat it somehow."
It's part of your journey toward reaching your goal.
You're still gonna make it, just stay in control
To stumble and fall is not a disgrace,
if you summon the will to get back in the race.
But, often the strugglers, when losing their grip,
Just throw in the towel and continue to slip.
And learn too late when the damage is done,
that the race wasn't over . . . they still could have won.
Lifestyle change can be awkward and slow,
but facing each challenge will help you to grow.
Success is failure turned inside out,
the silver tint in a cloud of doubt.
When you're pushed to the brink, just refuse to submit.
If you bite it, you write it . . . But don't you quit!

I don't know anyone who has done this weight loss journey "perfectly." It's by making mistakes that we learn, and one of the best lessons we can learn is not to let a single event derail us. Loved this blog because it reminds me of this very fact (and I need to be reminded a LOT!) emoticon

45 Lessons Life Taught

Friday, February 19, 2010

Written By Regina Brett, 90 years old, of The Plain Dealer, Cleveland, Ohio

"To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me. It is the most-requested column I've ever written.

My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more:

1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.

3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch.

5. Pay off your credit cards every month.

6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.

8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.

9. Save for retirement starting with your first pay cheque.

10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.

11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.

12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.

13. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.

15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks.

16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.

17. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.

18. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.

19. It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else.

20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.

21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion, today is special.

22. Over prepare, then go with the flow..

23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.

24. The most important sex organ is the brain.

25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.

26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words 'In five years, will this matter?'

27. Always choose life.

28. Forgive everyone everything.

29. What other people think of you is none of your business.

30. Time heals almost everything. Give time.

31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

32. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

33. Believe in miracles.

34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do.

35. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.

36. Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young.

37. Your children get only one childhood.

38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.

39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.

40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back.

41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

42. The best is yet to come.

43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

44. Yield.

45. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift."
