Three evil letters - FLU

Tuesday, May 19, 2009

Yeah, I have fallen victim to the flu too. It started Saturday morning at about 11 am. I had eaten breakfast and bathed. I came into the living room, sat on the couch. Hit me like a ton of bricks. Mind you, I hadn't had the flu since I was 12 years old. It started with a headache and fever coupled with chills then I also had wheezing going on-like I couldn't get enough air. I had had migraines a couple of times in the past, so that's what I thought it was. Later that day the fever went down, but it returned the next morning and the chills...I can't even describe them. I was only taking excedrin and tylenol over the weekend. Well, when I went to my doctor yesterday, I had a 103 fever, chills, body aches, headache, wheezing-the whole nine yards. My doctor gave me Tamiflu, an Inhaler, Singular, antibiotic. About the antibiotic...I took it on an empty stomache. Big mistake. So basically I was throwing up nothing and then dry heaving. yeah, this has been fun. Having the flu is worse than giving birth. The hardest part of this is keeping my daughter away from me. I definitely don't want her to get this crap. Oh yeah, another thing, the antibiotic gives me diarrhea. it works, but gives me diarrhea.

You poor thing, get some rest and hang in there.....I know how hard it is to keep the kids away when you sick, but do the best you can, the last thing you need is for her to get it!!! Sending you some prayers and a virtual hug! emoticon

Candy bars are evil!

Monday, April 27, 2009

Okay, for the past four weeks, I have been treating myself to one candy bar a week and that was on Saturdays. On the weekends, I am a little less strict than M-F. However, I didn't mean to eat three (yes, three) candy bars this weekend - two on Saturday and one on Sunday. All at about 220-250 calories per bar. I was so mad at myself. And then I started thinking don't beat yourself up, don't beat yourself up. If you do, you will revert back to your old habits. That I don't want to and can't do. So, I breathed to clear my mind and seriously thought about what I did. I got off of my path and that wasn't good. The fact that I recognized what I did, is a plus in itself. So today, what did I do? A catering vendor brought in lunch for the department. I had a little pasta, 1/2 of a turkey club sandwich, green beans (yummy), and a cookie. Having the cookie wasn't the bad part; the size of the cookie is what was bad. The cookie was about 4" in diameter (yeah) and I ate the whole damn thing. Now my stomach feels like it is about to pop and I am miserable. I feel like I put on two lbs. this week. uuuuggghhhhh....

The slippery slope... emoticon Guess what, though? It's not that bad. Try to stay calm and not beat yourself up or panic.

Think about it this way: On Saturday, with the 2 candy bars, you only had an extra 440 calories. On Sunday, you only had an extra 220. Monday... so, it was a large cookie. In the grand scheme of your new way of living, it's less than the amount of calories you'd usually eat in a day, so it really won't be a big deal.

You've had what I fondly refer to as a run-in with the Sugar-Monster. That monster's a sneaky sucker and creeps up on you when you least expect it. Do you know which substance is one of the most addictive substance to man? Yup! S.U.G.A.R. The Sugar-Monster's been usurping your will for the past few days, but try to remember that in the end, your will to change IS stronger.

Now, breathe in, think fondly of the candy bars and cookie that snuck by your guard, and don't fret too much about them. What's done is done. You still have your goals and there's still tomorrow.

Treating yourself every now and then is great. your right, you shouldn't beat yourself up, just try to refocus and get back on track. Sounds like you had some yummy food at the vendor. Just try to drink lots of water and have a lite dinner. you can do this!!! =) emoticon

Thanks. I smiled as I read the title of your post, then laughed at myself for clicking so quickly to get the details. I'm sure you have heard the saying , " If you want to get people to come to something, offer free food". For a nano- second I thought this was a hook. Thanks for the laugh and the info.

Saving on grocery bill in tough economic times

Thursday, April 16, 2009

It is so hard to do, I have to say that first off. Second, my store of choice is Wal-mart. Many people tend to not patronize them, but I find myself going there. Why? It's a one stop shop. Most of the time when I go, I have to pick up other things (toothpaste, maybe a t-shirt for my daughter, etc.) and hands down, they are somewhat cheaper than other stores on these items. Also, they have already sent secret shoppers to check out other stores's prices, so that they can drop their prices. Ok, on to why I go there. On some items, I won't cut corners (Baked Lays, toothpaste, lunch meat, turkey patties) and go cheap; on other stuff I will (milk, yougurt, water, my healthy snacks). Wal-mart's brand (Great Value) is pretty good. They have a 100 calorie pack of shortbread w/chocolate drizzle cookies. They are soooo good. It is a given that we must eat, but smart shopping is what will determine if you succeed in this economy. I remember when I used to go in the store and pick up all name brand items (Yoplait, Minute Maid Juice, Borden Milk, Blue Bell Ice Cream). Now, it's what's the cheapest but still healthy and nutritous to eat. I am still picky about my produce though, sometimes, going to the produce market. Wal-mart also has competitive advertising. For the ones that don't know what this means, if Kroger has Oscar Meyer lunchmeat on sale for 1.88, Wal-mart will match their price. Strong advice: Keep your sale papers (you know those annoying little weekly fliers that they stuff your mailbox with). Keep them and use them. Watch out for expiration dates, though - they usually start on a Wednesday and end the following Tuesday. One more thing: You will need the sale paper, in hand, if trying to comp ad at Wal-mart.

Hope this helps.

Well Woman's Exam

Tuesday, April 07, 2009

I went to have my annual well woman's exam yesterday. I was kind of apprehensive only because you feel healthy and good, but you never know what the test results will show. And then there's the waiting factor (about six days before the results are back). I have prayed about it all, though (as usual), and everything will be okay. I AM ASKING/SAYING TO ALL WOMEN: Please go and get your well woman's exam, this year, and every year after. Like all other things that we break our necks to get done (baking cakes for an event, making sure that we take our children to the doctor), do this for YOURSELF and the ones you love. As much as I hate to go, I make sure I get it done. Being that women are nurturers by nature, we tend to take care of everybody else and ignore ourselves (and our health).

MEN should also go for their well man's annual exam.
