It’s the STATINS

Saturday, November 16, 2013

Took me almost a month to figure out why I’ve been sickly and have hit a major plateau. It’s the dang statins the doctor put me back on. My cholesterol has dropped over 200 points through diet and exercise in the last 6 months. My numbers were still about 10 points too high and my doctor asked me if I would go back on statins (I went off them last year because they made my joints hurt) I said I would try them for him. Well, I started feeling bad, having headaches everyday and went into a major plateau. I did not associate any of this with the statins because last time I was on them, the only problem I had was joint pain. Well, I did some research this morning about my headaches and zeroed in on the statins (this of course after I had already taken my pill this morning). Looking further into the side effects I found pages and pages of info on how statins will stop weight loss! All this frustration and tears and trying to figure out what I was doing wrong for nearly a month and it’s the statins! I took the statins out of my pill organizer for the rest of the week and threw them away. Even if it didn’t stop weight loss, the headaches are not worth that last 10 points on my cholesterol levels. I know my doctor well and he won’t fuss at me. I will have some new literature for him to research when I go back to him. I honestly believe my latest plateau problem will be over in about two weeks (says it takes that long to get back right) – hopefully it will happen sooner, but at least I finally figured it out!

Congratulations on your milestones! I am SO happy for you!

Regarding the statins, you should read the book "Cholesterol Clarity" by Jimmy Moore and Dr. Eric Westman. It sounds like you have a decent doc who won't freak out about the last 10 points, but this book is still a really great resource (and written for the "average Joe") about what all the numbers really mean and their relevance to your health, not to mention has lots of information about statins in general that anyone taking them should know.

I've been on other medications myself (not statins) that had nasty side effects that my doctor dismissed when I complained. Turns out I could have removed a food from my diet (one I later found out I was sensitive to, that was causing my symptoms) rather than take a pill that dealt with the the symptoms rather than the core issue (and made me gain about 165 lbs over the two occasions she put me on the medications).

You might ask your doctor about fish oil supplements - there is research showing that fish oil can cause a moderate lowering of cholesterol. Since you are within 10 points, perhaps it would work for you.

Great job on losing more than 80 pounds! emoticon

My Mother was on them and -- even though we told Two Different Doctors about the Serious Side Effects she was having -- she almost died. We had No Idea at the time that Muscle & Joint Pain and Weakness were Known Adverse Effects of the Stupid Statins!!

I'm so glad you figured out the problem. Meds are great when they do what they're supposed to do without side effects. Sometimes those side effects are worse then the original problem.
I love those medicine commercials... Have migraines? Take this medicine.
Side effects may include, dizziness, dry mouth. vomiting, blood poisoning, kidney failure, heart attacks, etc etc.... Um, I think I'll just keep my problem and let them keep the side effects. LOL

I would say that if you already dropped your cholesterol 200 points with diet and exercise, you don't need no stinking statins! I do understand the Dr.'s reasoning though, you have gotten very close to where he wants you to be and figured with all of your weight loss the statins may not cause you the joint pain this time around. But with that being said, it is your body and only being 10 points over is pretty darn good!

Headaches / Joint Pain would be definite reasons to drop prescription meds for me...the plateau I could work around...and I do want to keep my cholesterol within range. So I remain on the lowest available dose.

Good medical detective work Dr. Kathy. Sometimes you have to figure out things yourself. Statins are very dangerous drugs. They can do more harm than good. I refused to go on them. Within a week you'll get them out of your system and start to progress in losing weight. Good for you.
Being a diabetic...I've learned that some Insulin's can cause weight gain. Since I've been off Humalog, I am losing weight and feel better. But when I first started eating healthy, I wasn't losing...this was why. HA!!!
So, I am looking forward to seeing your ticker inch to the right.

I'm glad you found the problem. That's why I don't take any medication....unless I absolutely have to. Only because a doctor prescribes it doesn't mean that its right for you. My doctor wanted to put me on High Blood pressure medication...I was only border line on the high side. I told her NO WAY and found how to lower it with my diet instead....no issues since...going on 5 years. Last check-up, she even said that I must just be an overweight person, because physically, I was fine. ...Sorry venting a bit here.

Any, I hope that your headaches will go away now. emoticon

Oh - I am so sorry that you had to experience this episode :( - a ton of medications mess with our internal system. I am sad to hear that your crying about a plateau . Those feelings are all part of this entire process and each of us learn how to deal with in different ways. The ten points are important - have you researched any natural ways to drop cholesterol ? Herballegacy.com , really they have been around for centuries . Many people to do not like to stray from Big Pharma into Natural Healing - I was reluctant as well and felt like the herbal Guru - but sometimes we need to try different methods . This plateau will pass - I promise - Hugs Karen emoticon emoticon emoticon

    Hope this helps you.
For me, they are not doing anything, not even muscle pain which is common.
Your cholesterol numbers are so good I don't know why 10 points is that important, just keep eating right of course!!!

Glad you have a doctor that is easy to deal with.
I really want to be a bit less in weight by January to 'show' my doctor. He thinks my weight loss is too slow which makes me upset with him.

My thyroid sometimes fights me, I get tested and sometimes it isn't right, but
I keep at tracking food. I can tell when it isn't right as I feel exhausted. When it works I feel fine. I am hoping as I reduce, the thyroid will work better for me since it is on again off again right now. I do seem to have less tired days a month now which is exciting.

Getting off meds is the goal of so many of us.

Remission and Flat tire

Wednesday, November 13, 2013

What a combo huh? Today we received the greatest news we could…Daddy is in remission. For those that don’t know - Daddy has small cell lung cancer. It was diagnosed while still in the limited stage (meaning it had not spread). We don’t know how long this will last…but I intend to celebrate it every day that it does! We go back for a check up in three months. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers

Now on to the flat tire - As we were leaving the doctors office, I thought the car felt funny and wondered if I had a flat tire…then the car seemed to be ok so I drove down to the bottom of the hill to the gas station to get some milk. (about 1/8 mile) Daddy went in to get it and after he came out I backed out to leave….I felt something again and put it in drive and went about 3 feet and knew something was wrong….got out and checked – and yep - flatter than a fritter! And off the rim…I don’t know how bad it is damaged…my husband – who came to rescue us – took it back with him to work to see if he can fix it. I will know when he gets home. (and yes, I actually can change a tire myself, but it’s much nicer to just be able to call hubby to come do it for me – and besides…Daddy didn’t want me to change it and I had to agree or he was going to try to change it!)

The flat tire would usually just ruin my day – but not today – today it just made me laugh. Nothing compares to the fact that my DADDY IS IN REMISSION!

edit - for those wondering - tire was ok and it is back on the car!

My new workout videos

Sunday, November 03, 2013

Well, I’ve got a new routine now! A very dear Spark friend sent me two exercise DVDs. Jodi Stolove’s Life’s a Celebration and a Seated Tai Chi program. (And some new Pilates bands!) The videos are not as intense as my turbo chair workout, (although I was able to increase the intensity and up my heart rate by modifying the workout as I went along) but I desperately needed to have something different, to have some variety in my workouts because I was becoming so bored with them. For now, since I workout every day, I am going to continue my Turbo workout every other day to maintain my customary intensity and my new Jodi Stolove video for variety on the other days. I will continue using my exercise bike every day and doing my arm strength workouts as well. I will be attempting the Tai Chi in the afternoon. I will also still throw in resistance training and core training every few days. But it is going to be so nice to have different videos to do.

I still highly recommend the Turbo Chair workout. Its intensity is great…it just becomes a little too routine after several months of doing it every morning!

Thanks again to my Spark friend for sending these to me!!!

Hope everyone has a great day!

    Kathy,

We need to change up our routine every now and again!!! In my AM walks, I'm up to 20 laps, and God told me to stop at 20 and don't go higher. I was getting in a bit of a rut, just walking every day, but I knew I wanted to continue with it, so I started doing different things in my walk. I would walk zig zag across the road, I would walk as fast as I can for 3 laps and then regular pace for 3, I've even jogged, danced my way down the road, as I wearing headphones, marching in place, at some point. I do what ever I can to bring a bit of variety to my walk, and God hasn't disappointed me, yet!!!

I pray that your new workout plan helps you out better for you, to where you'll see the lbs. just melting away.

Be blessed,

- Nancy Jean -

That's great Kathy! Another thing you could do to get some more variety is find exercise video's on YouTube that are the right intensity and interest level for you (there are a LOT of them) and then burn them to DVD. Here's a link to download a free YouTube to DVD burner program with instructions on how to use it:

Look on You Tube for Leslie Sansone walking video's. Denise Austin and Jessica Smith have some good video's too. Do a search on You Tube for "Low Intensity Workouts" and see what you find. If you like Tai Chi there are a lot of those on there too.

Happy Halloween Dear Spark Friends!!!

Thursday, October 31, 2013

I hope you are each having a lovely day.

Not much to report here…I do think I am retaining fluid though…still struggling a bit but the weight is coming off slowly but surely. 84 pounds so far. I have 16 more pounds to go to get to my next big goal of 100 pounds lost by new years.

My wonderful Daddy didn’t want me to have to wait to get my Spark Activity Tracker (I was saving up to get one early next year) so he gave me the money today to order it! I did get it ordered and it is supposed to be here in 5 to 7 days…I am so excited. I have had to “force” myself to workout lately and I believe this is just the motivation I need.

I am still decluttering like mad…I don’t do it for very long each day, but I do it every day…though I am struggling a bit with my living room because one end of it is hubbys and it is piled with mechanic books and old computers! He has promised to do something with it before Thanksgiving.

Ooh hi soon to be tracker friend! Hope you like it. For me it works best on my pocket. I had no luck with it on my shoe. I must walk funny. Decluttering is going on here as well but I have a barn with boxes in it too. Dirty messy due to location and so doing double duty. In winter I focus more inside which needs it. Little storage here so challenging. You can do it. PIles of old computers, oh my.

Near miss

Friday, October 25, 2013

When we left the hospital on Thursday (from Daddys chemo treatment) we saw the fire truck leaving and wondered why they had been at the hospital….well, it was on the news that night….A nurse had been stuck on the staff elevator for 2 hours – right around the corner from our room! We ALWAYS use that staff elevator because I take Daddy up in a wheelchair...he decided to walk Thursday so we took the public elevator! The lady got stuck a few minutes after we got there…it was pure luck that it wasn’t us on that elevator!!!!

Still trying to figure out how much my new furnace is going to cost to run…I’ve figured out that it runs about 4.5 hours a day. So I am estimating from that. Looks like it’s going to be around $200 a month…I hope that is right! I can handle that. Keep your fingers crossed that my math is right!!!! I did sign up for AMP (average monthly payments) today with the power company – not quite as good as fixed payments but there won’t be a huge settlement month either.

My weight loss has slowed tremendously. I am trying to figure out how to get it restarted. The only thing I can think of is that I am drinking more diet soda than usual so I will have to watch that more closely. (I drink it for the caffeine as I hate coffee)

I hope you all have a great weekend!

Kathy, I, too, am glad you and your father weren't stuck in that elevator! Wow, what a close call, though! Life can be funny--not (LOL)!!!

Just a thought with the weight loss stall . . . do you do much strength training? Might want to consider kicking that up a notch, to get the ball rolling so-to-speak. Listen to me (stalled as well); I need to take my own advice!!! Let's pump it up together then! emoticon

Soooo Glad you were not stuck on the elevator. I was stuck in the old one at hubby church once. I found out in about one nano second that I was very claustrophobic. I was screeching get me out of here and hitting buttons and making sure the gate was truly closed. I had no clue that I was before this. I had nightmares of being trapped in all kinds of situations for weeks afterward.

    Kathy,

That wasn't luck that kept you out of that elevator, it was the grace of God! I can only imagine how your dad would have faired in that situation.

I don't anticipate your new furnace costing more than your oil that you had. And the big thing is you don't have to fork out $2,000 every year to have heat, and it will never run out!!!

SP has an article on how diet soda can cause you to gain weight. That was one I ran across, in my pursuit of knowledge and getting my Sparkpoints. It was a really good article. I'm sure you can type in under search, asking if diet soda can cause weight gain. You have a wonderful weekend, too!!!

Be blessed,

Glad you weren't stuck in that elevator, that would be no fun! As far as the furnace goes, if you can take it, set the thermostat a couple of degrees lower, that should help with the running time. Assuming that you aren't already doing that of course.

Get rid of the diet soda!! If you can't stand coffee, drink tea instead... anything but the diet soda!

Sometimes you just have to go back to basics, as if you are starting all over again. If you think it's the soda, try adding fruits to your water, or some cucumber/lemon. emoticon

God was looking out for your Dad when he decided to walk instead of taking the elevator. Being stuck in an elevator would have been a horrible experience!

Kathy, from the sound of it, your exercise routine is pretty much always the same, and if you're like most of us, what you eat is fairly consistent too. So maybe you need to shake things up a bit -- for example NO DIET SODA for a couple of days and see if it makes the scale move.

Wow that was a close call. I hope your Father is doing well. My son works for the elevator union here in Chicago and that happens often in the big buildings , scary. He made me proud the other day - he stated that he lost 15 pounds in order to be able to walk up all the stairs with equipment to fix the elevators. Good for him.

Do not get discouraged on the weight slow down its just your body adjusting. I have started to give up a few pleasures to budge the scale , myself. Enjoy your weekend. I'll keep my fingers crossed on your math. emoticon

WHITNEYTEACHER 10/25/2013 7:34AM

I love coffee but not without creamer and that adds lots of calories so what I've started doing is drinking 2 cups of coffee first thing in the morning and then switching to Green Tea with truvia after that for the rest of the day. It takes some getting used to but tea (unless it's herbal) has caffeine too. You could make iced tea if you didn't like it hot - just a thought. A couple of years ago I stopped drinking soda and, at the advice of a nurse friend of mine, started drinking SOBE instead. It's pretty good, zero calories and you can get it either at WalMart or Costco. I don't know if Costco is in your area or not but I'm pretty sure WalMart is. SOBE doesn't have caffeine though but it's much better for you than diet soda.

So glad you didn't get stuck in the elevator! Hopefully the hospital will take a look at the other's in the building to make sure everything is OK with them instead of waiting for a problem to occur.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you and your heating bill. We use a woodstove for our heat and it's pretty nice. Rod used to be able to cut firewood and built up a pretty big supply, enough to last us several years, before he had to stop because of his back problems. Before marrying Rod I spent too much of my life cold, not being able to afford the heating bills so I know what that's like. It's supposed to be an unusually cold winter this year so you're definitely in my thoughts. emoticon

Wow very lucky escape. It would freak me out. Just keep plugging away and you will lose. My weight loss is very slow this time, but every pound and half pound adds up.     Wow....I'm so happy that you two didn't take the elevator. That is one of my worst nightmares. (Luckily I don't need to use them too often.)

If you don't like coffee, how about tea? There are some very tasty, caffeinated teas out there...and you can even add lemon to it.....Just a suggestion.

Wishing you a great day!
